6202  Economy / Exchanges / Gemini Now Has Billboards on: October 03, 2019, 07:09:56 PM
I don't know if it has been discussed / mentioned but while driving south on I95 in The Bronx I noticed Gemini has a few billboards up.
Did not have a chance to grab my phone and take a picture, but I thought it was interesting.

And although I do tend to drop in and spend a little bit of BTC in many places. The higher and higher amounts required are getting to be annoying.
Yeah, $5 is not a lot, but I can put that into a dice / slot place and play for a while. This is a drop $5 and win or not. Just not my thing. But I do like the retro look.

6204  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: NovaBlock, The Most Profitable Mining Pool on: October 03, 2019, 01:12:04 AM
Which when you think about it is probably a good / smart thing if they are doing it properly.

1) It allows time for a human to look at the numbers and see if anything seems off.
2) It allows people to possibly contact them and report a low payout amount before they are made.
3) If they keep their hot wallet low it gives more safety. Alice in payouts has to get BTC moved from Bob in accounting. Just another layer

Not saying that is what they are doing it, just that if I was doing it that is how I would.

6205  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-09-29] A Dangerous Bug in Bitcoin’s Lightning Network Has Been Fixed on: October 02, 2019, 11:51:37 AM
well, they believe it really happened, and that's all we (and they) have: belief

like I said, it's be easy to fake this, so I guess they must trust whoever reported it to them. The data could be totally correct, but the person reporting it could have known about the bug, and stole the money from themself, then presented the thief as a 3rd party when in fact they "stole" their own money.

not seen the details, so I have no info as to how much was lost

As I said someplace else. It was known and discussed informally by a small group @ DefCon back in early August.

However since:
(a) I really didn't pay attention to it
(b) everyone I mentioned it to after accused me of FUD
(c) since it was just a bunch of people sitting around drinking & talking at a bar I had no proof said conversation ever happened.
(d) I really didn't understand the attack (did I mention drinking at a bar)
(e) the amount of funds I have on my lighting node won't buy 2 cups of coffee so even if all the of lightning network crashed it and I lost all of it, it would be a zero event for me at the end of the day.

I didn't follow up on it.

So there was more then 1 person who knew about it so it's a safe bet someone did something. That's just human nature.

As to how much. I doubt it was that much or there would be discussions about it. But that's just my opinion.

6206  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: USBHarpoon - a charging cable that can hack your computer on: October 02, 2019, 11:21:45 AM
The above article says that the cable creates a wireless hotspot which means that the hacker would need to be close to the victim to take advantage of the vulnerability. It is still a scary thought if the person who sells it to you knows where you live or where you will be using it.

It's a bit more worrying for the "captive audience" type. Get them into the hotel gift shop or cruise ship or the store at the train station and you know more or less where many of your victims will be.

New business model. USB cables with clear plastic so you can see everything inside.

6207  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Big drop in hashrate on: October 01, 2019, 06:51:44 PM
There was a news that Innosilicon's (mining company) data center caught fire burning around $10M worth of equipment. Though there is no public comment from the company out yet. Many people are blaming this fire for the drop of the hashrate. Also, a news came that the rainy season in northwestern part of China created a problem for one more mining company.

News source
https://cointelegraph.com/news/10m-mining-farm-fire-takes-blame-as-bitcoin-hash-rate-wobbles

There is no drop in hashrate.
In the last 24 hours there have been 148 blocks mined.
Anyone saying there is a drop in hashrate flat out does not understand mining.

As has been said before

Anything less then the 2 week (2016 block) adjustment is essentially meaningless.
But if you are really worried about it. The next thing is the 1 week number which is at 1039 which is more then the 1008 of 1 block every 10 minutes.
If you are looking at the last 24 hours, call me when it drops below 133 per day for 2 days back to back. Other than that your are just wasting time.

The play store app was updated yesterday (30-Sept-2019) so they are there and working.

It does not look like the regular shutdown zendesk page. This is more of a they cancelled it page. Could be migrating, could be something else.

Looking at archive.org there was never much there anyway.

6209  Other / Meta / Do we need a latest version of Wallets sticky thread? on: October 01, 2019, 11:18:57 AM
Saw this post this AM:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5189101.new#new

For all versions of all wallets threads like that come up somewhat regularly.
Should someone post and have @gmaxwell and  @achow101 [the mods of the wallet software forum] make sticky a list of the latest versions of the wallets that are listed and the official download locations.

Could avoid some headaches for newbies. And some not so newbies.

The downside is someone or someones would have to stay on top of several different pieces of software for several different platforms and keep it updated.

Figure a discussion about it here would be good.

Have you looked at the Liebert Cabinets?
Don't know if that is what you are looking for but, they are the only ones I know of that have that kind of density. (415V @ 400A)

6211  Other / Meta / Re: Ban for trolling on: September 30, 2019, 08:34:01 PM
If theymos was forcing that rule r0ach wouldn't be among us right now. I believe the rule is there only if the troll somehow succeeds at what he is doing.

For example the troll I named above is almost added to every person's ignore list probably, which means nobody gives a fuck about what he thinks. > unsuccessful troll, no ban needed.

Same goes to GP. Nobody cares.

True, with a but r0ach (as far as I can tell) never stole from anyone. And 95% if not more his posts are in 1 thread so it's kind of contained.
GP is more of a cancer.
Just my view.

6212  Other / Meta / Re: Ban for trolling on: September 30, 2019, 07:53:29 PM
And as I said. The more we waste their time in the threads the less time they can try to scam someone.
Yes, with the big red warning and the negative feedback it's harder but it could still happen.

Let me go poke the troll. Will not accomplish anything, but it's fun.
ETA: Troll poked. Will not accomplish anything but it does give a warm fuzzy feeling to do it.

Keep your equipment were you can see it.

Or something like that.
Tripped across this thread and the link within 30 minutes of each other so I figured I would share.

I'll try anything once or twice. Dogecoin and Ravencoin are both cheap enough that throwing some at it is no big deal.
Played, won and got my coin. Played again an lost. Needs more players as there is a long wait for the 2nd person.

6215  Other / Meta / Re: Possible root cause of permanent bans because of plagiarism made years ago on: September 30, 2019, 11:26:39 AM
@Welsh
Below is a snip of the conversation of what I posted back in MAY about the issue.
Short version, he quoted himself IRL & got a ban. Revealing that would disclose who he was, not interested in doing so. Not coming back.

So we loose a good but very occasional poster because of it. But since "we don't monitor scams" we keep having to deal with users like game-protect.

How many other people have we lost.

That's just stupid.

To use your example of murder above. It's like the speed limit on a street it 55. Everyone occasionally does 60 or 65. The cops don't bother you till you hit 70. Then they ticket you. There are cameras that record your speed but are for the most part unchecked. All of a sudden not only are they checking the cameras but they are issuing tickets from 12+ months ago for every time you went 56. THATS the problem.

-Dave

Well there's nothing we can do about that but I'm sure word will spread pretty quick and many users will be reappearing to try claim their accounts back. Most people who got banned are probably still here just on alts so I'm they'll see it. Tell your friend he can appeal if he wants. I'm not sure what you're complaining about here though. Would you rather us not issue sig bans and just leave everyone permanently banned?

No, I agree with the banning. I have an issue with digging up posts from 4 and 5 years ago, hitting people who are not monetizing their sig. You could have hit him with sig ban and he never would have cared.
Or given a 90 day vacation from the forum with a stern warning. Or nuked the posts from 2014.

They can appeal to mods or admins in private if they feel like they can't make their claim publicly.

Discussed that with him. Not interested in anyone knowing who he is IRL.
Not you, not theymos, not anyone. Only reason I know is because I have known him for 30+ 40+ (crap I'm old) years. And he is not real happy with the fact that I know his forum use or the fact that I am talking about it here. But, I think this discussion needs to exist.

The other issue would be that since he has almost no merit and a lower post count it's going to be tough to make a good defense.

Yes, it's a very rare 1 off case, but it's still there. And if I know 1 person who had it happen, I will bet you just about any amount there is at least one more.
Possibly they have had an issue with another forum member and this was a push they needed to leave.
Does their SO think they spend too much time on here and it's an internal excuse to leave?
Did they cash out 18 months ago when BTC was at $20k and just don't care as much?

Could they appeal? yes.
Do they want to? possibly.
Will they because of external factors? perhaps not, or at least not now.

As I said, spamming & plagiarizing now. You're out of here. Once it's over 1500 days old and has not been done since? Temp ban with stern warning or something.

Just my view, take it as you will.

All of mine are like that with no issues. The only ones I have problems with are the ones I got 2nd hand from people.
As with all things YMMV.
The biggest issue is the cheap ass bearings they have in the fan.

6217  Economy / Gambling / Re: MintDice – Bitcoin Casino With Online Slots, Bitcoin Crash & Bitcoin Investment on: September 29, 2019, 07:41:19 PM
...But then again, all you can do is believe me or not Smiley
I have no reason not to believe you. But I’m interested to know what percentage of the slot return to the player? I believe that these figures should be accessible to everyone.
I doubt that is really something that should be shared with the public, I mean they can if they want to but that is not a data information that they should be forced to give up. If you wanted house edge then sure, if you wanted odds sure, if you wanted anything related to you gambling here then you should definitely get it.

But, the question of "how many slot players return after gambling" is not really something that affects the way you gamble, maybe psychologically it does affect it but it doesn't affect the real outcome of your gambling so I think if they want to hide that information they should.

We could literally ask how much has been gambled on this website so far and how much profit mintdice made so far out of that and we have the right to ask that, doesn't mean they can't just decline it.

I agree with you on this. I see no obligation for the casino to share this info. This info is their logistic which they use internally to assess how their business progresses and since this does not affect the players then I see no advantage for the casino to publicise this other than them wanting to do so
If the percentage of return to the player is small, then it makes no sense to talk about it. I know such gambling in which the return is very low and it is impossible to win there. But if here the percentage of return is set at the level of a real casino to 95%, then this is very important information. And players should know this.

There are actually 2 different numbers involved for slot games.

The 1st number is the % hold. Or the percentage amount that you should loose. i.e. 1% hold means that after a very large number of $1 bets you should have 1% less then what you started with.

The 2nd number is the actual return. Or after "X" amount of bets how much you wind up with. In theory they should both be the same, in reality they are not. Why? Because the % hold includes the top prize amounts (with their slot the 5x bear or 5x penguin) so they tend to come a lot less. But, when they do it smooths out the curve of payouts.

1) Do you know which board went bad? Every R4 I have had issues with the top board went bad. Heat rises....who knew...

2) A trick that sometimes worked for me was update to the latest firmware (2018-11-19) then go back to the 2017-04-28 firmware and if that did not work go back to the 2018-11-19 firmware. That has allowed me to revive some dead boards now and then.

These aren’t worth much right now think you’d have to be like $60 or less for anyone to consider it might be better off selling off the parts  fans alone are worth $20

Yeah, you are probably correct. But, since I am selling this for someone I am limited as to what I can do price wise. I could part it out, but that becomes more of a PITA for me. Leaving the ad up and bumping it every couple of weeks is no big deal.

A bit OT here, but I am going to try running it with 1 or 2 hash boards and the fan speed turned WAY down to see if it can be a quiet space heater. Might make it more interesting for people now that winter is closer.

@LOTEO I have a screen capture of it if you need to see. It's a bit large but I can put it up somewhere if you need to see it.
