I don't think I am making things too complicated because so far I wasn't scammed so it works.
You are right that most of these PMs are scam attempts, as I said multiple times already in my posts above, but why should I ignore all of them?
Everyone has to start as newbie, me too. From my experience, I open my door to newbies, and don't disable PMs from newbies in my profile settings. However, if any newbie send PM this way. I will ignore all their later PMs because they obviously give me scam indicator with their very first PMs. Depends on what they write in their PMs, I will decide to reply them or ignore them later. If someone go first and ask for financial supports or invitation to join groups, projects, and so on.

Just a quick question on the weekly earned merits:
2019w36 is defined as the range 03sep2019 .. 09sep2019 (Tuesday to Monday) according to the "please see"link. m36 should be the total earned merits at the end of that period.
Ah, I forget to mention about it. Each week, for example, 2019w36 will have last two days of 2019w37. So you are right that it is not exactly 2019w36, but we just assume it and I don't think there are serious issues. I used data dump from LoyceV, and converted it to Calendar day. I don't have skill to scrap data myself, so I used this assumed definition as alternative. Sorry for lack of clarification in OP. Calendar day is in GMT time.To take away all doubt: the first Merit was this one: 1516831941 1 2818066.msg28853325 35 877396 Use EpochConverter to convert 1516831941 (Unix Time) to GMT: Wednesday 24 January 2018 22:12:21. For intra-day merits over days of weeks., I dropped last two days from each week data dump by LoyceV to have exactly complete Calendar week. Intra-day merits: - Days from 24/1/2018 to 18/2/2018 truncated due to highly potential outliers; and days after 09/9/2019 truncated as well due to incomplete week (the 2019w37);
Converted intra-day merits for days in 2019. . list id merit date day month2 year week month dofw if year == 2019

The top 100 merited users in the analysis snapshotted at the 2019w36, according to the data update in [CLUBS] Top Merited-Users Classified into 4 Clubs, with weekly support to update from @LoyceV. From that week, I traced back 13 weeks (from 2019w36 to 2019w23) to collect total earned merits and calculate earned merits between each two weeks. Results for median of weekly earned merits - The top 100: 8 merits per week, with interquartile range is 3 to 18. It means if someone can manage to earn more than 7 merits per week, over months, they might move to the top months later.
- The top 1-25: 13 merits per week, that is 30-percent higher than the the second group (top 26-50) at 9. The rest two groups (top 51-75, and top 76-100) have same median at 7. (see details below)
- In median, top 26-100 merited users earn around 1 merit per day
![Cheesy](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif) Note: - Figures here do not reflect exactly statistics on weekly earned merits of top 100 merited users, because I only traced back 13 recent weeks. - I will expand the list to top 100, over all observed weeks in above thread, if forum users have interest with this thread. (Done) - Weekly statistics are not exactly for each week in Calendar day (due to theymos data dump). See explanation here. Ex: 2019w36 includes 5 days in 2019w36 and 2 days in 2019w37. - I might trace back to more past weeks (around 3 months) when I have spare time Statistics:- For all 100 users: - Mean +/- standard deviation: 12.6 +/- 14.1
- Median (interquartile range): 8 (3 - 18)
For each users (see details in below table). In median: the top 5 (just for last 13 weeks) are: - o_e_l_e_o: 49
- fillippone: 45
- nutildah: 41
- suchmoon: 35
- LoyceV, bob123: 34

I noticed just now that new rank requirements were released one year ago. Release of merit system was big thing, but I think that these rank requirements (1 merit to become Jr. Member) have real effect. It changed forum a lot into positive side.
Effects of enhanced merit system (aims at old-era Junior Members) can be seen on the time-series plot, with a spike (from abuse) in September of 2019. Time series plot of truncated dataset (from 26/1/2018 to 16/1/2019) [first two days dropped] Another evidence is total monthly registered accounts fell dramatically since September 2018. You can see from that raw statistics and from the time-series plot. After merit system run in January 2018, people kept creating new accounts, because they were still able to rank up to Junior Member rank from shitposts, but since September 2018, with this change, they realized the fact that they were unable to rank up to Junior Member from shit posts. Most of shitposters are unable to earn a single merit, so they stopped creating new accounts. Let's compare stats of September (total register accounts from mid-August 2018 to mid-September 2018), for the month before the enhancement and some months later: - One month later: 16oct2018 (figure from mid-September 2018 to mid-October 2018), at 41516 and 35335, respectively.
It means about 14.9% drop after one month since the enhancement. - Three months later: 15dec2018, the stat fell to 20733, that equals the 50% drop.

Happy anniversary merit system! Long live!
You are incorrect. Merit system's birthday is not today. In fact, its birthday is January 24, 2018, 11:00:11 PM (forum time), or Wednesday 24 January 2018 22:12:21 (GMT time). Please read: One year anniversary of merit system. We have not yet reached the 2 nd anniversary of merit sytem.

Lately, I got also a couple of PMs from old and new accounts and half of them was a scam attempt. Of course always in such situation, the first thing which I do is to check these accounts and PM if it was for sure sent by the real account owner. Checked this account but everything was ok, active for a long time and with a good reputation. But additionally, I always respond to such PMs and ask if this is real and this time member responded back, that he never sent this PM and don't know what is going on. Hackers get into his account but never changed the password, only acted as the real owner.
I don't think you should make things complicated like that. ![Tongue](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/tongue.gif) If someone go first and ask for financial supports or invitation to join groups, projects, and so on. I ignore such PMs all because they don't deserve my time to investigate who send those PMs, real users or hackers, and which intention they want. Such things always (or mostly) relate to bad purposes. In contrast, if someone send me PMs to ask for help, such as ask for my permission to do translation from my threads, or ask for anything that I can help from my knowledge and skills, I will do reply and help them. This is a real threat because everything looks fine, they delete PMs immediately after sending, login only when the real user is offline and if you are not lucky enough to get to the real owner with your PM, you can be scammed very easily if you fell into this great promotion or anything else, which is very hard to say no of course. I had to add that this was a high-rank and established member account, which is really scary and I think is worth to know that something like this already happened.
In serious cases, I think admins or global moderators can step in, but it is rarely without government/ police requirements, eg. If it is personal issues between users, I don't think admin or global moderators will spend their time to do this, because basically it is not their responsibility. Forum stores data on users' PMs 6 months after PMs deleted by senders and all recipients Until the sender and all recipients delete the PM, plus about 6 months

I have to say again and again that signature campaign is not really a wise move if there are no other attractive offers on the site. I do even think that it will be wiser if they focus on offering some promotions first before starting a signature campaign. Nowadays it is hard to rely on signature campaign only without any other offers. Owner should realize it, otherwise the campaign wont be effective.
They will start their signature campaign soon, because I saw a thread for that purpose. 2dice.io's signature campaign. Maybe, there are a little delayed days to fix signature codes (as their manager said). I agree that they should upgrade their signature with two separate set of signature codes: the first set is for Full Members; the second set is for Senior members and above; or they can build up different signature for Senior members; and Hero members & Legendary members. To have as biggest effects from their campaign, different signature codes should be used.

The forum is not created as place for ranking-up racing intially and might never been a place for that purpose, so I don't think we need such shortly existed badge for newly ranked up users. The idea to display two figures in user merit stat: earned merits/ total merits or vice versa, looks good. However, it still cost a little space under each username, and makes the forum looks less clean. Below usernames, we already have lots of figures for Trust. Additionally, for normal users (non-campaign managers), I don't think there are too many users will care about earned-merits/ total merits of other users. Stats of earned merits is just one of indicators for post quality and user contribution. Another minus point is that there is at least one site to check those statistics, BPIP. So if users or managers want to check those stats, BPIP can give them helpful stats.

By the way, for privacy on Telegram, there are some steps that Telegram users should aware to increase their privacy and prevent contacts from strangers, and scammers. Phone number privacy:Who can see my phone number: I suggest to choose "Nobody". Who can find me by my number:I suggest to choose "My contacts" Group invite settings:Who can add me to groups and channels: I suggest to choose "My contacts" Personally, I don't have demands to make friends with strangers, so I modify some settings like that. Q: Who can see my phone number? On Telegram, you can send messages in private chats and groups without making your phone number visible. By default, your number is only visible to people who you've added to your address book as contacts. You can further modify this in Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number.
Note that people will always see your number if they know it already and saved it in their address book.
Furthermore, in case you get such bad attempts to scam from strangers, let report them Q: What happened to my account? When users press the ‘Report spam’ button in a chat, they forward these messages to our team of moderators for review. If the moderators decide that the messages deserved this, the account becomes limited temporarily.
This means that if you have been sending unwanted messages to random strangers or posting spam in groups, you lose the ability to do so.

Scammers are everywhere, and they tend to create fake accounts of famous ones in order to scam naive people. Not only fake-suchmoon accounts, but also many others. I don't know that is a real conversation or not, but you pointed out a very common method of scammers. Unfortunately and hilariously, people often carelessly enough to fall into such trap. Whichever platforms people use, they should aware that famous users mostly don't go first with PMs or whatever. Especially they don't go first to ask for financial deals. Keep it in mind, and being carefully, then people will be fine. To give an example, there is a forum that uses Epochtalk software, a new forum of our beloved one. In that forum, you can easily see the pinned message. On other platforms, being awareness that accounts with same usernames of famous users in the forum, does not guarentee they are same people. Quote from: suchmoon on Jan 19, 1970, 6:56:13 AM Please keep in mind privacy and safety implications : Don't use your bitcointalk username or otherwise link yourself between sites if your don't want to expose your IP to third parties; Don't use the same e-mail and/or password; Don't assume other users have the same usernames. I'm pretty sure there are many other pitfalls. Be smart please.

My requirements for Newbies are really low: if I think it's a real user and not a spammer, I'll Merit him/her. I strongly believe that's what Bitcointalk (and Bitcoin) needs to grow long-term.
I agree with you. Months ago, in 2018, my very first merits came from @actmyname when I joined his contest and won. 14 merits won in that contest motivated to me and I have never stopped improving myself, and slowly crawled to the top (Hero member now, and soon will be a Legendary, next few months). While not all of them are spammers, I do think that the vast majority of their posts are of very low quality and are made primarily for bounties or signature campaigns, which has been the case for years now.
Yeah, it is very rarely to see good posts from newbies. I saw some users sent merits to Newbies who opened threads to ask for help, with serious questions, not to get posts. It is hard to say it is right or wrong way to use merits, but I think that approach is flexible and not too bad. Posts are acceptable quality (just for newbies) even they are questions.

If you can still have access to your email, you can try to reset your password via your email. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=reminderIf your account has not been hacked, and sometimes, for some reasons, your account can likely be locked due to security. If the first step to reset password via email fails, you should follow other recovery steps in that guide from admin, with enough proof of ownership to get your account back. If you already signed a bitcoin message years ago, and still can sign a new message from the same address, it will be helpful.

Most of those threads, articles, sites already listed in my guide (I posted above). I wrote this section in my another thread. We all appreciated anyone who know good sites, articles, sources to share, but in my opinioin, if someone already mentioned or collected it, I think it is good if not repeatedly share already mentioned resources. Posters, from now on, please read all above posts before sharing resources you know. Read topic title, OP, a few first and last posts before posting Spend a little time to read topic title, OP is not enough. Users have to spend more time to read (at least) a few first posts and last post in each thread, before posting. If there are answers above their posts, those posts they made are trash, no matter how much time they spent.

Theymos was thinking to create a different type of account when you create account for a bounty hunters and regular members. There was something mentioned for the bounty managers as well. I'll find it and i'll post ti.
I don't think there are new badges like what you said. There are misconception that signature campaigns, bounties belong to the forum. In fact, they are not. From that, I don't see theymos have reasons to create new badges for campaign managers and/ or bounty hunters. He only wrote (or forum users proposed) that if things become worst, there will likely required fees to wear signature, and companies have to pay some fees per fixed period (monthly, eg.) to run their campaigns or bounties. It's too early to get a clear picture, but my thoughts so far:
First, most people complaining about merit are constantly posting garbage, and should not rank-up. The forum is not a welfare system; you don't run through a few hoops and then get paid for doing something that nobody actually wants. I like that good forum members can make money, especially when said forum members are in poorer countries and this is a major opportunity for them. I very much do not want to destroy the sig-ad/airdrop/bounty "industry". But I am not going to tolerate people posting garbage upon garbage. If the merit system completely fails and I can't think of anything else to replace it, then my next step will probably be to completely remove all ways for forum users to make money from posting (eg. removing signatures entirely).
He only said if merit system fails (what it has not failed, fortunately), he will consider to remove all signatures globally in the forum. If all signatures removed, there are no reasons to have such badges for bounty hunters and bounty/ campaign managers.

What does the signature campaign guidelines thread have to do with a person getting banned for posting in a giveaway?
No. I don't argue about it. Just think (as @mprep posted). Adding common, only that word is enough and I think less people will ask about it. For now, people (or at least me), if only look at that guide, will think there are only three types of temporary offence. If you think my suggestion to add that word 'common' makes sense, please edit that guide. If not, please let me know, then I will lock this thread. The issue with that is that's how I do it. Other global mods or admins might have their own go-to ban durations. As hilariousandco said, there are no set durations, only common practices (then again the same applies to the forum's rules, hence the "unofficial" tag at the start of my rule thread's title).
Staff do not want to hand out bans for unconstructive posts but if we feel that you as a user are continually making very poor or unsubstantial posts due to your paid signature the following common bans will be issued:

Sorry, but I started my avatar campaign in protest of all the other avatar campaigns, which cause the same confusion. Which rules to apply and wear your avatar. If I can wear your avatar and don't have to wear any signature, I will do it, just in case I fail with my application in ChipMixer, this round. I don't know I have good net effects or not. Since I stand firmly against all these PAID2POST campaigns and feel only NET POSITIVE services should be advertised on the forum, I present..

There are no set rules on how long you can be banned for. A mod can give you a 1 day ban or 100000 day ban if they see fit.
7, 14 and 30 day bans are the most common ones used by global mods and admins. While I usually default to these, whenever there's a situation where an offense just doesn't match the most common severity levels (is lower than the lowest, higher than the highest or in between), I tend to use 3, 5, 10 or 60 days for such offenses.
I understood, but the guide of @hilariousandco should be updated with a few words on what you both disclosed. Currently, if a newbie visits that thread, they will be misguided somehow. They will think there are only three types of temporary bans, with 7-days, 14-days, and 30-days ban period. Staff do not want to hand out bans for unconstructive posts but if we feel that you as a user are continually making very poor or unsubstantial posts due to your paid signature the following bans will be issued:
First offence: 7 days Second offence: 14 days Third offence: 30 days Fourth: Permanent ban
I also know there is a rule quoted below, but I still think if that guide updated with some details on ban periods of temporary bans, it is likely better, IMO. 23. When deciding if a user has broken the rules, the staff have the right to follow their interpretation of the rules.[e]
