681  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Hacking Bitmain Antminers (S7 & S9) because man a lot of these break...... on: January 02, 2018, 09:10:45 AM

How often do u clean the antminer. U use a can of airspray right? Do u also use air filter for your room intake air?

I used compressed air from my air compressor.  If you don't have an air compressor, you should consider purchasing one.  They're extremely handy for many-a-things besides cleaning miners.  Impact tools, filling tires, filling inflatable pools, dusting the interior of your car.  etc etc...

I know can of air is safe. Is there any risk of electrostatic discharge damage if use air compressor or anything other than can of air?

Oh yeah, compressed air is great. That and a pressure washer. You would not believe the amount of stuff you can do with a pressure washer, everything from cleaning the house to gutters to your shower tiles to cleaning baked on crap for a bitcoin board (just kidding)

For the really messy boards I typically use air to blow off the big crap, followed by 95% isopropyl alcohol, followed by air, then alcohol, then Q-tips to get the crud out. That pretty much does it, just have to do it outside in the yard....

Isopropyl alcohol is safe to use without issues? Also, does this require opening the miner such that it voids warranty ?

Banks will lose some biz, not all.
683  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Sell your house for investment in btc. on: January 01, 2018, 05:18:56 PM
That is plain stupid...dont do it.
684  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Hacking Bitmain Antminers (S7 & S9) because man a lot of these break...... on: January 01, 2018, 02:40:38 PM
If Bitmain builds these chips and doesn't sell them, then I doubt a third-party is going to magically get the chips. It's possible they are selling stolen or bad run chips, but those would not be the kinds of things I'd want to stake my reputation on as a repair person for a client.

Yep, blown chip. Here's a close up of the scorched damage under the chip....

Another good reason to keep these units fairly clean and dust-free.  Not only does the accumulation of dust act as an insulator, but it also provides fuel for a fire.   I picked up a used S7 and it looked like it had been run inside a barn.  I wore a full on respirator to clean it.

Do you think, under the right circumstances, that this could cause the whole unit to go up in flames?  How well will green PCBs burn once they're in contact with flames?

685  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: 480v 3 phase service. how to fully maximize efficiency on: January 01, 2018, 08:30:36 AM
Are u sure it is a good idea to use step down transformer when u are running something 24/7?
Better to rewire to 240v? Wat if the transformer fails for a second? 400 volts would damage the antminer right or does step down transformers have some safety feature to prevent this?

Do you know how a transformer works?  Never mind, I already know the answer to that.

------------------------

OP,

As previous posters have said you will need to buy transformers to step your voltage down to 208.  The efficiency of these transformers and their placement will determine a large part of your system efficiency.  Place the transformers to minimize the lower voltage cable runs.  This will also save you wiring costs.

I read here that https://www.electronicspoint.com/threads/step-down-transformer-suddenly-stopped-working-but-why.263968/ and here says   https://www.techwalla.com/articles/what-happens-when-a-transformer-blows   it can get smoky/catch fire or explode if it fails but it wont damage the device....still too much of a risk imo

I see. Noted. Thanks

65 db is still pretty loud actually and are u sure the airflow works well enough ?
689  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitmain Antminer S11 releasing! on: December 31, 2017, 04:36:17 AM
Yeah and this whole thread has been quite useless so far.

Nothing real information with real sources on the subject ("Bitmain Antminer S11") that would give anyone anything.

Just a waste of everybody's time.

true, but I think there won't be an antminer s11 until bitcoin mining with s9 isn't profitable anymore (which I can't see in the near future) or like all people said a competitor brings something better out. I've got many s9 miners over here in Austria and I hope for some delay on new ASICs to be profitable a litte bit more.

Genesis Mining is sold newer sha256 mining contacts starting on 28 February and and of march, I guess they got some new stuff next year.
I know they have a lot of miners of Bitmaintech in the past so that`s why I think a newer miner will pop up soon (somewhere in Q1 2018).
Or -- they are hawking the upcoming Canaan A8's which are due to be released to major customers in that same time frame...
Since there IS NO 'S11' in the works from Bitemain and only your pure wild speculation on them, guess what I'd bet on... Wink

Fuzzy, check out the november 10 post on bitmain facebook. It says 7nm is under development. So, is it possible?

7nm is kinda alot better than 16nm? It is less than half the size.

7nm mining is not possible to happen in Q1 or Q2 2018, even TSMC or Samsung are still struggle to bring their 7nm to commercial production. If either TSMC or Samsung do successfully produce commercial production, the 7nm wafer will go to APPLE, snapdragon 1st.

Note: Bitmain purchase 16nm wafer currently from TSMC for their antminer s9.

most probably 10nm chip for their next gen antminer same like ebang E10.

correct me if i am wrong. tq

But wasnt there a japan gmo company that was also researchin into 7nm?
Maybe it is possible mining market gets some too? Hmmm yeah but probably not in next 6 months

I am juz observing but how is it there is no stock now but if u have 1000 unit order, they will suddenly have stock?
And lol, alcohol delay review for 3-4 week is juz funny. Juz to speculate, I guess if things go wrong later, they dont want to hear too many complains, thus the need for lesser people ordering, thus, a minimum 5 per order? And hmmm I assume if things go wrong later, they all have excuses ready. This is juz speculation, not accussations and i could br wrong.
691  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What is the average lifespan of an Antminer S9 on: December 30, 2017, 08:48:29 PM
Good to know man. Wat temps do u run them at? Do u check the heatsinks every week or so? Are they expected to loosen up later?

Do not open the machine during the warranty period!

I just shake machines gently when I first get them and listen for rattling, you need to make sure nothing came loose during shipping. The controller thing does rattle on top but that's normal.

Once the machine is running I try not to touch it. Monitor hash and temps. If you run them real hot I guess they could loosen up and drop off but temp would jump and machine would probably stop hashing. Then do the shake check again whenever you need to clean out the dust.

I live in cool dry climate and have 5 of them in garage so far. My ventilation is not ideal so I am looking to improve. But in winter I don't care because they heat my home.

There are 2 temps for the machine
#1 chip temps you can get from the machine web page, one for each hash board
#2 controller or chassis temp you can get from api stats command. I don't know where this temp sensor is so if someone knows then let me know. Its always lower than chip temps and it doesn't show on the web page. Awesome miner or the raw api output will tell you this temp.

My machines are running about 70 deg. Celsius chassis/controller and about 80-90 deg. Celsius chips. Not bad for a setup without proper ventilation. Many people run them hotter.

I am confused. U mean temp (Chip 2) on the antminer miner status webpage is around 70 degrees? Thats a very good number if so. Mine is 70-85 degrees on different miners.

U are saying controller or chasis temp is always lower than chip temps but u are also saying that is 80-90 while chip temp is 70. Did u mean vice versa?

Btw how do u check antminer chasis temp?

~snip

CONGRATULATIONS!

Get a shit ton of silica gel packets and install it inside the rooms. It should help with the moisture to some extent. When the profits start churning in, consider investing in a dehumidifier.

Those silica gel will need 2 be heated up to release the moisture also. Not so good.

New batch of Antimer L3+ on sale now on the Bitmain website.
Priced at $1,586

Out of stock already Sad

True, wasn't the previous price for this batch higher?

Yeah and I believe this is why I got a 500 dollar coupon from bitmain. It is because i got an L3 at 2000+ earlier. They giving me back the difference.

696  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is Bitcoin Mining Profitable in 2017 and how I'm making $50 a day w/ S9 on: December 29, 2017, 08:44:42 PM
It should be significantly lower than 50 actually
697  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Starting mining operation on: December 29, 2017, 08:40:50 PM
I think it may not be so good because avalon and ebit are also throwing out miners next year, not just bitmain?
They have improved models.

Just my 2 cents. I could be wrong and I hope to be wrong....
698  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: DragonMint 16TH/S halongmining.com on: December 29, 2017, 08:38:00 PM
hard to believe. Even canaan's next 2 models wont be this good and they been around alot longer. Bitmain is even smart enough to even go into AI. I doubt they can beat bitmain.....
699  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What is the average lifespan of an Antminer S9 on: December 29, 2017, 07:31:40 PM
I think we got off topic from OP question.
Check these forums. Some say S9 might only last a few months then need repair, other people say they are still running from first batch in 2016.

I have only owned 5 S9's operating for a few months without any problem. Use good power supply and keep the air flowing. Check the heat sinks to make sure they do not fall off.

Good to know man. Wat temps do u run them at? Do u check the heatsinks every week or so? Are they expected to loosen up later?
700  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is there a chart that shows profitability of mining in the past?? on: December 29, 2017, 07:26:02 PM
Unfortunately, I dont have the skills to build such a thing.
Gotta somehow use the bitcoin difficulty chart together with bitcoin price chart to get the profitability chart. It can probably be done quite fast by someone who knows how though.

The result would give u an idea of wat happens when profitability spikes.....and give a rough idea how fast it goes down again perhaps. And also a reminder that it profitability does not stay up that high that long. I believe currently, people juz use the bitcoin spot calculator, and look at spot rate, and forget or dont know of the past before making a decision. I think if I seen such a chart back then, I could have avoided the D3. Good thing I have alot more S9s and L3 than D3.

I will check out that tool calculator. Thanks
