7061  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Paytunia Bitcoin wallet released today! on: April 08, 2012, 06:33:18 AM
So what you are saying is that when I have a android/iphone that is reset to factory defaults and I then insert a sim card from some carrier, then the carrier can get control of my phone.

Does your phone automatically get updated?

If so, someone else has the ability to control your phone.
7062  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Problem receiving payment on: April 08, 2012, 06:04:07 AM
His is the 0.01 BTC tx. He says it was also a newly generated address that he gave me. He has fully downloaded the blockchain, too.

Since it is in the blockchain and not yet spent then the problem definitely has to be with that installation of the client.  Is the client the latest version?   Does the block number reported by the client jive with the latest block number from BlockExplorer?

7063  Economy / Speculation / Re: Node Count vs. Price on: April 07, 2012, 10:36:55 PM
You can't deny from those graphs that the network is on a downward trend as far as people actively using Bitcoin.

Daily transaction volume is up a solid 20% over where it was at the beginning of the year.

That can be manipulated easily but the trend is probably fairly accurate.  That chart tells more about how actively Bitcoin is being used than the trend of the number of users running as nodes tells.  The dropoff in nodes might have been exacerbated from those who were mining solely for the "free money" and now that a good chunk of lower-end hardware isn't productive enough it makes sense that their nodes have since dropped off the network as they've quit mining.

Though Bitcoin isn't gaining huge traction as an ecommerce payment method yet and retail / point-of-sale is virtually nonexistant for now, Bitcoin does seem to be used for international payments and remittances, for speculation and for other uses that let Bitcoin just keep on keeping on.
7064  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: MTGox Green Address Withdraw time on: April 07, 2012, 10:28:59 PM
and it's been almost 4 hours yet I didn't see any sign of the coin coming to my address. How long does the green address withdrawal take?

You are asking how long a transfer to an address to your local wallet?

Just to make sure you aren't overlooking the basics ...  you aren't seeing the transaction in the blockchain, correct?

If the amount was high (over aml limits for instance) or for other reasons they might have held the withdrawal.  If it isn't on the blockchain and the withdrawal didn't occur you'll need to contact the exchange.  Open a ticket using their Support website:

7068  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Im in the UK, whats the best way to buy bitcoins? on: April 07, 2012, 06:21:48 PM
Is there any reason you can't open a UK bank account? You can't really deposit funds without an account. I'm sure the bank would be very happy to take your money off you but you wouldn't see it again.

Let's say if I were traveling and would rather not trade my remaining pounds at the forex at the airport, for instance.

In the U.S., Canada and Australia there is the ability to deposit cash at a bank into an account that sweeps the deposit (less a fee) into an exchange.  In the U.S., BitInstant and AurumXChange use TrustCash for this, in Canda Virtex and Bitcoin-Central offer this method to their own account (at TD Bank for Virtex), and in Australia there are multiple options as well.  So I was just wondering if this method was available in the U.K. as well.

Could the exchange website's home page include a link to the "Market Data" page so that I don't need to log in first to get access to the link?

7070  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bets of Bitcoin - Bitcoin betting on real world events on: April 07, 2012, 04:25:23 PM
Also the description we posted is quite clear that we require an official statement from the collaboration.

Still is ambiguous to me.  Well, not only ambiguous but clear enough to me (before you clarified what the intention was) that I felt comfortable placing a bet on something that seemed to nearly be a "sure thing".

Had that initially been written so that there was no doubt the intention, it would have included the word "either".

Such as:
"This statement will be true if there is an official statement from the OPERA collaboration stating that either there was an error in the previous analysis or that the results are refuted by more data before the end of April.

This will be a good test here for seeing how this gets resolved.  Observing the process I wonder if improvements to policy for the service should be considered.

Specifically, the policy on when the service will weigh in on something like this.  Bets Of Bitcoin just provided clarification about how to interpret the details regarding an event after bets had already been taken but before the betting has ended.  In my opinion (as a layman) I don't think there should have been any comment other than to direct the user to existing published policy regarding what the judging process will be once the event occurs.

If there is a positive announcement we will close the bets and rule the statement true.

So an event can occur before the event date?  This should probably be referenced in the help:

7071  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bets of Bitcoin - Bitcoin betting on real world events on: April 07, 2012, 09:46:42 AM
Bet #139, currently the bet with the largest amount wagered on the entire site, is just a few weeks away from a decision.

The wagers favor at nearly a 3:1 ratio that "An error will be discovered in the faster-than-light-neutrinos experiment by the end of April 2012".

Physicist Dr. Amber L. Stuver states:
Quote
it was found that a loose fiber optic cable and an error in their timing produced the superluminal observations.

The bet included the instructions:
Quote
This statement will be true if there is an official statement from the OPERA collaboration stating that there was an error in the previous analysis or the results are refuted by more data before the end of April.

That's almost a slam dunk then for those betting "Agree" but there are still three weeks left where additional wagers can be placed, causing that ratio to widen even as the latecomers wager on Agree as well

So even though the return isn't that great, it might seem like this would be a sure thing that the result will be True.  There is just a hint of suspense yet though.  There was no "official statement" about there being an error yet, as far as I saw.  It is widely known that the data can "refute the results" but as-of-yet new data confirming the error hasn't been published.  The instructions don't specify that the data has to be made official though so this has probably already been decided.

I just wanted to ask then if any alteration to the bet occurs when the decision is already known before the end date.  No affect? I suppose that's a risk those betting early should take into account.

[Update: Full disclosure - after I posted this I wagered on "Agree" (True) ]

Having trouble uploading the mp3 for an audiobook:
"Error uploading file. Please try again or contact info@coindl.com"

Any suggestions?

If I have a few files for the same audio recording (e.g., MP3 (128 bit), OGG and MP3 (64 bit)), would I need to make separate items or is there a way to upload all three for a single item?
7074  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [Announce] Coindl.com - a new digital downloads marketplace powered by Bitcoin on: April 07, 2012, 02:02:55 AM
Getting artists, authors and publishers on the site is the #1 priority. I'm reaching out every way I know how to get folks interested in selling on the site.

[...]

An update: Since launch, we now have the album by Justin Porter that is leading in sales

This should be bursting with new uploads from amateur and other artists!

I don't know how many sales a Justin Porter normally sees but without having a widely recognized name he's benefiting greatly from being among the first to have content listed on the site.  As you mentioned, you had over 500 visits on the launch day.  Nearly every one at least saw the name Justin Porter since the selection is sparse and his shows up multiple times.  That's free advertising for these musicians.

How about taking pledges for certain artists or music genres even.  For instance, let's say I'm looking for dubstep.  I might pledge .2 BTC towards the first dubstep song to be listed on the site.  Or for specific artists -- if some pledges were made that proven revenue might help be what persuades the artist to sign up and upload.

I suppose for those who have signed up with a recording label though the choice to sell through CoinDL isn't up to the artist.   But simply having pledges might help the artist make a plea to the label to list on CoinDL.

Somewhere where people could send, for example, 0.1 BTC in exchange for a music download? If not, is any one working on it?

It seems like a good fit.

I maintain this for a monthly summary:

The data used for BTCs is based on Mt. Gox data and is obtained from Bitcoin Charts:

Select custom date range, scroll down and click Load Raw Data.  Copy and paste to a spreadsheet (note there is a gap from 6/20/2011 through 6/25/2011 as the result of the exchange having no trades on those days following their security incident).

Are there any options yet for depositing cash at a bank in the U.K. for those who don't have a bank account?
7079  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What do you want your BitCoins to buy? on: April 06, 2012, 08:30:00 AM
Sure wish someone would sell the mobile phone prepaid card / "top up" codes online.  Starting out small, one could list them for sale and then as they are sold head to the gas station or wherever and buy the denominations that were sold.  Scratch off and deliver the code online (securely) to the buyer.
[Update: Done.  http://btcbuy.info/CallingCards.cshtml  and BitInstant will be offering airtime in Brazil, Russia, and elsewhere. ]

If there is sufficient demand, then these are available wholesale at about a 4% to 8% discount (e.g., a $30 cost $27.60) but there are volume requirements to get them wholesale.

These could probably be sold 10% over par even (e.g., sell a $30 code for $33 worth of bitcoin).
