7741  Economy / Trading Discussion / Prod Yahoo! into adding BTCUSD symbol to Yahoo! Finance/charts. on: December 20, 2011, 06:59:08 AM
Yahoo! says they appreciate our comments.  So I provided to them this comment:

Please add Bitcoin currency to the list of currencies tracked.  Here's why:

1.) Bitcoin is the most widely traded digital currency out there.
2.) Bitcoin trades freely against the Dollar, Euro, Yen and over a dozen other currencies so is of interest globally -- not from just any one region.
3.) The sources for the data from the exchanges are free.
4.) Beat Google!   Google does not yet offer this currency (e.g., http://www.google.com/finance?q=btcusd )
5.) Beat Bloomberg!   Bloomberg terminals feature the digital currency Ven from Hub Culture, which trades just a tiny fraction of the volume that Bitcoin does.
6.) Finance professionals already track Bitcoin, using tools such as SierraChart: http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Sierra_Chart_MtGox_Bridge

7742  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Selling vanilla visa gift card ($105) for BTC on: December 20, 2011, 03:57:31 AM
I'm selling a vanilla visa gift card with $105 on it, which essentially works as a credit card for online purchases. I'm looking for around 3.5USD/BTCish, so around 30BTC or make me an offer. If the buyer is well known and trusted I would be willing to go first.

You might find a buyer if you listed this on the #bitcoin-otc marketplace.

7743  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: WTB $630 Visa/Mastercard/Amex on: December 20, 2011, 02:20:28 AM
Wouldn't a PayPal debit card (Mastercard network) give you access what you need  ... the ability to spend from your PayPal account balance?  Unless you are hoping to purchase using funds from a credit card through PayPal ...

Anyway, you might find someone willing to do that trade on the #bitcoin-otc marketplace -- though for that size of transaction you'll probably need to have a trust rating history on the #bitcoin-otc marketplace's Web of Trust (WoT):

Wouldn't hurt to try through.  Feel free to ask on the -otc marketplace's IRC channel used as its front entrance:

7744  Economy / Gambling / Re: *[~BITLOTTO~ & ~BITLOTTO JR~ UPDATES]* Next draw is Jan 4! on: December 18, 2011, 02:34:28 AM
I know it is crazy! Kalyhost (Does the DNS) won't reply to my messages. I can't change that until they let me log in.

KalyHost has ticket-based support through ZenDesk, just like Mt. Gox.  Have you created a ticket there?

Additionally, they are on Twitter and Facebook, should additional contact methods be needed.

I'm almost ready to just get another domain with someone else.

BitLotto is a great brand.  Though keep in mind that .com names (particularly those related to online gaming) are vulnerable to confiscation by U.S. authorities.  You might wish to register it using namecoin as a .bit as well.  The cost to register is 1.5 BTC.

7745  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: $90,000 in credit card fees on: December 17, 2011, 09:57:18 AM
Heh, the campaign can lose even more than 3% from people like me who selected PayPal as the payment method.  The fee to the recipient is 2.9% + $0.30 per-transaction.  Which keeps the rate at more than 3% for any donation under $300 USD.
7746  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Dwolla's Big Announcment Today- Instant Credit. No More ACH Delay on: December 16, 2011, 02:39:54 AM
Combine that with a $500 line of credit and things are going to get interesting.

Well they hit their quota for the first batch of applicants within the first half hour after the press embargo expired.  Free (er, ... easily borrowed) money always has a greater demand than supply.  Smiley

Doing the math, $3 per-month plus $5 per-month (late payment) on $500 owed is 19.2% fees on an annual basis (the first month, and then the rate drops down to under 17% after the amount owed rises but the monthly fee doesn't).  That is actually less expensive than many credit card agreements charge for interest.  And you could even drop the $3 during the first month so that charge would not occur each month.

Quote
"Those are the only two fees," Milne said in the interview, "no percentage rates, no other penalties, no fine print."

So I can keep the debt and owe it indefinitely?  I'm guessing there is some "fine print" that will come.

Quote
TMG Financial Services will research each Instant user's credit history. "Just like if you were to apply for any type of a loan," Russell said, "it is based on your credit history and other risks factors."

Quote
"I don't know if this is the best analogy," said Jeff Russell, the president and CEO of TMG Financial Services and a Dwolla board member, "but it's a little bit like an American Express in that sense of, you know, your whole balance is due at the end of every month and you have to pay the whole balance off."

That analogy would probably be good, except that AmEx probably scrutinizes a bit closer before granting credit.  And AmEx has a lot of "fine print" so you know exactly what happens if you don't pay in full.

Hopefully it is not Dwolla that is exposed to the risk of customer defaults on this.
7747  Economy / Auctions / Re: Bitcoin-related domains - winning bid chooses one on: December 16, 2011, 01:01:40 AM
Payment received, thank you!

PM with further details related to the transfer sent.

Looks like TerryTibbs had the high bid at the time of the cutoff.

Congratulations Terry!

BTC/USD exchange rate at the time: $3.20

So the winning bid will pay 9.6875 BTC for a choice of domain (or a set of domains if offered as a set).
7749  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie Experience with MtGox on: December 15, 2011, 11:09:02 PM
I was just shocked that there were no safety precautions with MtGox, no fail safe, no way to stop the transaction.

Sorry to hear of your financial loss.

MtGox has a ticket-based support system.  Have you opened a ticket?
  http://support.mtgox.com

Withdrawals are limited based on the exchange's default AML related limits.  It used to be a fairly low BTC level, like 100 BTC per day.  I don't know what the threshold is nowadays.

The exchange does encourage the use of Yubikey:

Quote
The Yubikey is a device allowing secure identification with a "One Time Password". It is recognized as a USB keyboard by your computer, and touching it with your finger causes it to input a 44 character long password which is unique and is only valid for a few seconds. Each time you use it a new password is generated, protecting your account even if someone has access to your computer.

A Yubikey will allow you to login to your Mt.Gox account securely via two-factor authentication (you will still need to login with your username and password first), adding an extra laywer of security to your Mt.Gox account.

Please note that Yubikey's order from Mt.Gox can only be used with Mt.Gox.

In the event that your Yubikey is lost, you will only be able to order a new one if you can prove you are the account holder.
7750  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Sell me a credit card for bitcoin? on: December 15, 2011, 10:51:41 PM
If you are looking for a virtual gift card for making a purchase, you might find luck offering to pay bitcoins to someone who will make your purchase for you.  The #bitcoin-otc marketplace might have a reputable "buyer of bitcoins" who would provide payment to you by making the purchase on your behalf where shipment is made to your address.

7751  Economy / Auctions / Re: Bitcoin-related domains - winning bid chooses one on: December 15, 2011, 10:12:14 PM
Bump.

Under two hours left!

Current high bid ... just $5 USD.
7752  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New habit - Do you accept bitcoins? on: December 15, 2011, 08:35:30 AM
I have started to ask the seller "Do you accept payment in bitcoins?" before bidding now.

The physical bitcoin products (e.g., Casascius, PrintCoins.com, etc.) and/or the mobile wallets lets you try this when buying in-person.
7753  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoins for cash? And development for bitcoins? on: December 15, 2011, 06:33:45 AM
Could anyone recommend a good website where I can buy programming, freelancing and development services for bitcoins?

There are some freelancers who have listed their services here:

There are many talented people who do freelancing and would be happy to accept bitcoin.  Some frequent the #bitcoin-dev IRC channel:

And additionally, there is a Services category here in the BitcoinTalk forum.

7754  Economy / Auctions / Re: Bitcoin-related domains - winning bid chooses one on: December 15, 2011, 02:27:38 AM
Bump.

Just under 24 hours remain.  Current high bid is $4.

Some questions that had been asked:

This auction is for the ownership of the domain.  I will transfer the domain (or domains, if the auction winner chooses a set that is offered) to the recipient's domain registrar.

This does not include hosting.  A domain does not even require hosting if the intent by the buyer is to simply reserve the domain name for future use.
7755  Economy / Auctions / Re: Bitcoin-related domains - winning bid chooses one on: December 12, 2011, 10:52:23 PM
The winning bid gets to pick either a domain or set of domains. He wants bids to be in USD (though payment in bitcoins). So your bid would be roughly $3, so:

I bid $4.

Correct.  The high bid gets to choose a set of domains when offered as a set, or a single domain.  Bids in USD, whole dollar amounts.

So the high bid is currently $4.  with just a little over 72 hours left. Thank you for your bids!
7756  Economy / Auctions / Started - 4 Day Auction - Bitcoin-related domains - Winning bid chooses one on: December 12, 2011, 08:12:06 AM
This is a 4 Day Auction.

Started: Monday, December 12, 2011
Ends: Thursday, December 15th, 2011 at 4pm PDT (for GMT, Friday, December 15th at 00:00:00 midnight)

The winning bidder gets to choose a domain (or set of domains when offered as such) from the list below.

Now that this auction has started the list of domains will not change, but do note that the list is slightly different from the original post.

The format of the auction is forum bidding, in whole dollar amounts -- USDs (e.g., $15).

If there is enough bidding activity, I may move the bidding over to #bitcoin-auction ( https://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=bitcoin-auction ) for the last day.  If a bidder wishes to bid without revealing his or her identity, PM me and I will relay your bid.

These domains are currently registered with GoDaddy.  The quickest method to transfer is from one GoDaddy account to another. Transfer to another registrar will likely incur a fee that is imposed by the destination registrar -- the buyer would be responsible for that fee.  Payment for the winning bid must be received within 48 hours or the bid becomes void, and there will be sad pandas. Please only bid if you intend to purchase should your bid win.

Bid amounts are in USDs to protect the bidder against exchange rate fluctuations but payment in BTCs at the market rate at the end of the auction will be the preferred method of payment. Dwolla or MoneyPak would also be acceptable.

Most of these domains will include the @Twitter name that was registered as well.  Those with an (@ N/A) will not.

7757  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info - Bitcoin Block explorer & Currency Statistics on: December 10, 2011, 02:04:49 AM
Wait a second, today, I can PGP encrypt my wallet and give it to you. Once you decrypt the wallet, you can do whatever you want with that wallet in the blockchain or side channel again. The only additional cleverness is rather than PGP, I'm just using your public elliptic key (associated with an address in the blockchain) because I'm confident you have the private key.

Or just upload an unencrypted wallet.dat, SSL (https upload) will keep the contents of the wallet secure.

I encrypt an entire wallet with your public key, email it to you, and you decrypt it and do whatever you want with the wallet. The blockchain is no wiser.

That's a feature I was thinking might be useful -- a service that would import a wallet and all its keys.  Because there is no easy way yet for (non-technical) people to merge wallets, those with multiple wallets (e.g, from a laptop and a separate on a desktop) are abandoning their old, empty wallets.  But perhaps some payment will still arrive to one of those addresses -- that happens enough to where people are storing an archive of their wallet now, ... just in case someone sends bitcoins to an old address.   If that wallet were to be imported on BlockChain.info, then all those keys from that old wallet could be retained.

At the time, I considered it to be a separate service -- a "wallet cemetary", where the service would take a cut should any bitcoins be received to those old addresses.  Maybe that would just be one of the methods for moving from a local, Satoshi client wallet to BlockChain.info's Wallet.

I thought you could just walk into a Chase bank and send money to Mt.Gox?

That method has been temporarily suspended:

There are multiple methods to acquire bitcoins:

Two other exchanges that still offer the ability to deposit cash at a bank are:
 - http://www.get-bitcoin.com  (Chase)
 - http://www.cryptoxchange.com (Bank of America)

When does the auction start?

Will probably open the auction sometime this weekend and the auction end date will likely be Dec 15th.   The list will be changing as I need to remove a couple of domains.
7760  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Need help answering a Bitcoin Related question ... on: December 08, 2011, 08:34:36 PM
There's another service in the same space ... PayBitBack.

Simply mention a person in a Tweet and then also mentioni @PayBitBack and the service will reply with a bitcoin address for the tip jar.  The funds received into the tip jar can then be redeemed only by that person.
  http://www.PayBitBack.com for instructions

I've tried it ... and it worked fine when the recipient understands bitcoin.  For others, it didn't go as well.   I doubt the tip I sent to a photographer ever got redeemed.

YouTipIt has "escrowed TipIts" which work the same way -- you initiate a tip to any Facebook user -- and only that user can redeem the tip.
