7821  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitaddress.org what is it for? on: October 30, 2011, 02:24:47 AM
The bitcoin wiki is loading slowly lately, but contains some info:

Because the addresses can be generated offline (i.e., on a computer not connected to the internet), this is one of the most secure methods for storing bitcoins.

The code is open to review, including review by security professionals and improvements to the code have already been made as a result.

I suspect this code can end up getting used as a low-tech merchant point of sale solution as described here:

7822  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Paypal for MtGox USD? on: October 26, 2011, 03:23:44 AM
I know most traders are totally against trading Paypal for BTC. But what about paypal to MTGUSD?

Heh,

The reason you won't find many who will trade PayPal for BTC is that Bitcoin trasnactions are non-repudiable ... the transaction cannot be either cancelled or reversed.

The MtGox USD code is a bearer instrument, and also cannot be reversed  (it can be redeemed by the sender, so that is one way it can effectively be "canceled" before it is redeemed by the recipient).  So the same problem exists with trading PayPal for MtGoxUSD as exists for trading PayPal for BTC.

You might find a willing participant in the #Bitcoin-otc marketplace.  Here's the current order book:
  - http://bitcoin-otc.com
  - http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#bitcoin-otc-foyer (marketplace IRC Chat)

Additionally, you might find a party willing to trade in-person through one of the local exchanges, such as BTC Near Me, Bitcoin.local or Ubitex even:

7823  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Warning: Fake Casascius Physical Bitcoins website on: October 25, 2011, 04:33:10 PM
The bitcoin address it provided after filling out the form with junk info was: 1GHRsryckBsSfKgv6zbun5egbxq8GCT8f1

I see no coins sent to it yet.   Hopefully that is a static address given out to all and thus nobody got defrauded so far.

I suspect this could be taken down with a DDoS fairly easily though that would be a violation of the law in my jurisdiction so I couldn't participate.

7825  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How long does it take for deposits to bitcoin client? on: October 21, 2011, 04:59:36 PM
From the FAQ on the Bitcoin Wiki:
Quote
I was sent some bitcoins and they haven't arrived yet! Where are they?
Don't panic! There are a number of reasons why your bitcoins might not show up yet, and a number of ways to diagnose them.
First of all, check the current max block count by going here ( http://blockexplorer.com/q/getblockcount ) and comparing that to the number in the bottom right hand corner of your client.
If these numbers are different by more than 1 or 2 then you need to wait for your block chain to download. If not, then it's possible that your transaction hasn't been included in a block yet.
You can check pending transactions in the network by going here ( http://bitcoincharts.com/bitcoin/ ) and then searching for your address. If the transaction is listed here then it's a matter of waiting until it gets included in a block before it will show in your client.
Bear in mind that if the transaction is based on a coin that was in a recent transaction then it could be considered a low priority transaction take longer to transfer if the transaction fee paid isn't high enough. Very low priority transactions with 0 fees might take hours or days to be included in a block.

There not only has been endless discussion on this topic, because this is a foundation of bitcoin and thus won't be altered there have been alternative currencies launched which address your topic.

More on those here:

A small city in Europe: What would happen if...

...you took 50000 casascius physical bitcoins and threw them all out of an airplane above the city?

I suspect since the cost was zero, any that were found would not be valued much.  Being that these can be redeemed at Mt. Gox, the technical among them or those already familiar with Bitcoin would find that they could offer cash below the exchange value and either make online purchases from a merchant (by arranging to send the physical bitcoins in bulk even, hoard then or profit by exchanging these at an exchange even.

Most of the coins, however, would likely be lost as these are about the size of a quarter and a small city has lots of roofs, street gutters, gardens, etc.

Because they all won't be discovered at once and plenty of willing buyers remain so the value of these as money among the residents would likely soon match that found on the exchanges.  Some will start using the coins to settle small payment amounts -- for example, used as payment to a friend who bought the beers or to give as a tip at a restaurant, for example.  A few merchants might start accepting them -- maybe even gaining an advantage by being the first and putting on some promotion that brings new customers through the door.

Whether or not this approach would cause a tipping point to be reached where the coins become a currency who knows.  It would be neat to see such an experiment play out.
7832  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bets of Bitcoin - Bitcoin betting on real world events on: October 19, 2011, 07:49:24 PM
Competition coming?  Crowdpark the creator of the social gambling and prediction-market Bet Tycoon on Facebook just got $6M of new funding and its co-founder "would love to" add bitcoin as a virtual currency used in their betting.

Whether or not there is a sincere interest in this or if this was just a response was teased out by the reporter is something not apparent from the article.

Plug it into any computer boot from the jump drive and trade.

I think I got it.  It is a combo USB + Wi-Fi and nothing more?   And the advantage over just a plain old USB is that this has the Wi-Fi and proper drivers so that there need be no mucking around trying to get Wi-Fi to work ?

Or am I still missing the problem you are trying to solve with this?
7834  Economy / Collectibles / Re: The 25 BTC CASASCIUS PHYSICAL BITCOIN is here! on: October 18, 2011, 08:15:00 PM
because I intend to load the value whether the coins arrive or not.

That is a satisfactory response.
7835  Economy / Collectibles / Re: The 25 BTC CASASCIUS PHYSICAL BITCOIN is here! on: October 18, 2011, 07:28:25 PM
I know that when a miner generates, the 50 BTC reward (or portion thereof) can go to a specific address.  Eligius, for instance, does this:
As does P2Pool.  Eligius even offered to do this for non-miners on a contract basis.

I think one of these 25 BTC with the 25 bitcoins coming as generated coin would make it even more valuable.  Because there are only about 60 thousand 50 BTC blocks remaining, a pair of these collectibles each with 25 BTC from the same block would make them even more valuable as that is something that cannot be done again after about a year from now when the 50 BTC reward drops to 25 BTC.

Incidentally, I showed the physical 25 BTC coin at my monthly coin collector meeting.  Out of 40 (including many that are octogenarians or close to that) there were four who were interested in these.

From a different thread Casascius wrote:
For those considering reselling Casascius coins in local markets, I am able to do quantity discounts on the 25 BTC coin to make resale worthwhile if ordered in quantity 50+.  They'll also be shipped inactive, via express courier, and the BTC value not loaded until you receive them, to mitigate risk of loss and customs problems.

So just to clarify -- it is possible that these could be circulated without having the hologram tampered with but having no bitcoin funds loaded, correct?  I.e., if I were to accept one of these as payment or purchase one, I should first check the address to confirm it has the bitcoins loaded?

On the way down, almost all of the speculators sold.

These must be speculators who had their money at the exchanges, because had they held funds in their own wallets the BitcoinDays Destroyed metric would increase.  Instead it has been showing further accumulation over the past month.

When those coins that haven't moved since June start to move, then you can make your claim that there is selling.   But for now there seem to be a lot of iron stomachs out there.
