7761  Economy / Auctions / Bitcoin-related domains - winning bid chooses one on: December 07, 2011, 07:31:31 PM
I plan to hold an auction where the high bid gets to choose a domain (or set of domains when offered as such) from the list below.

As there is already some interest in some of these domains, I'm not ready to start the auction just yet -- once the auction starts the list won't change.

Most of these will include the @Twitter name that was registered as well.  Those with an (@ N/A) will not.

BankOfBitcoin.com
BitcoinBounty.com
BitcoinCapital.com
BitcoinCash.com
BitcoinDirect.com
BitcoinFinancial.com (@ N/A)
BitcoinFX.com
BitcoinHoldings.com
BitcoinLLC.com
BitcoinPartners.com
BitcoinPal.com
BitcoinProperties.com (@ N/A)
BitcoinPurse.com
BitcoinTreasury.com
BitcoinVentures.com
EarnBTC.com
WinBitcoin.com

Sets:
BitFund.com & BitcoinFund.com & BitcoinFunds.com
BitcoinBroker.com & BitcoinBrokerage.com (@ N/A)
BitcoinGame.com & BitcoinGames.com & BitcoinGaming.com
BitcoinInc.com & BitcoinIncorporated.com (@ N/A)
BitcoinTech.com & BitcoinTechnologies.com (@ N/A)
CryptoCoin.com & CryptoCoin.org
GPUMine.com & GPUMining.com
PlayBitcoin.com & PlayBTC.com
BitcoinDrive.com & BitcoinFlash.com
BitcoinJobs.com & BitcoinGigs.com & BitcoinWork.com

-------------------
Likely will be offered for sale outright (i.e., not listed in the domains auctioned)
BitcoinVault.com & BTCVault.com
BitcoinSilver.com & BitcoinPlatinum.com & BitcoinBronze.com (and possibly BitcoinGold.com as well)

For the auction, bid amounts will be in USDs (to protect the bidder against exchange rate fluctuations) but payment in BTCs at the market rate at the end of the auction will be the preferred method of payment. Dwolla or MoneyPak would also be acceptable.

If there is any interest in buying a domain prior to the start of the auction, please PM me or contact me using a method from: http://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/User:Sgornick

Don't forget StrongCoin.com - they allow private key import in most formats.

BlockChain.info is another.  The Javascript wallet there lets you import keys in Mini Key, Base 58 and other formats.

7763  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I need a visa/mastercard that can be filled with bitcoins on: December 06, 2011, 11:14:46 PM
What is the spectrum of reloadable cards?

I'm familiar with:
which accepts bitcoins to reload even.

And then I've seen that Western Union for instance sells a reloadable debit card in which the reload can be done using cash at a Western Union agent ($4.95 fee).  This might be useful to trade your bitcoins with someone who has cash and wants to buy bitcoins.
 - https://www.wuprepaid.com/wuprepaid/public/get.do?view=/public/feeTable

This method is a parallel for those who trade bitcoins for MoneyPak which they use to reload a Green Dot prepaid card or a PayPal debit card.

AurumXChange has a debit card loadable with MTGUSD or LR USD I believe.

I've not used any of these methods myself, except for some relatively small trades where I sold bitcoins for MoneyPak.

7765  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: hello guys i asked flattr.com when will they accept Bitcoins? and this is their on: December 06, 2011, 07:44:50 PM
PS if flattr accepts Bitcoins that would be awesome

Flattr sucks fees out of each payment made, and maintenance fees are drawn from the balance held with Flattr each month, I believe.

Why not just post a bitcoin address so the recipient gets every bit of money (pun intentional) that is sent?

Exactly 1.0 BTC.  A Nerd Merit Badge
 - http://www.nerdmeritbadges.com/products/bitcoin

It shows "Sold Out" but that simply means you cannot use the online shopping cart software.  Because their eCommerce provider (Shopify) does not yet accept Bitcoin as payment, you must use the manual method of sending an email with your order and then waiting the day or so for them to send you a Bitcoin payment address.

This is one of the few products that are priced in bitcoins and will not fluctuate based on the exchange rate.  The order page states:
'If the value of bitcoins appreciates above our normal selling price, we will make more money. If it goes down, well then that's too bad for us."

This could make the badge a valued collector's item if the value of a bitcoin rises significantly as at a much higher price, fewer will likely be sold then.

7769  Economy / Gambling / Re: *[~BITLOTTO~ & ~BITLOTTO JR~ UPDATES]* Next draw is Dec 7! on: December 04, 2011, 03:25:40 AM
I cannot say this conclusively but it appears that the site had been defaced by a hacker and has since been taken offline.  [Update: The site is back up using new hosting so my reply is no longer relevant.]

Zone-H creates a mirror/archive of a site after someone reports that a defacement or other hack to a site has occurred.

Zone-H reports:
 http://www.zone-h.org/mirror/id/15878149
 Notified by: SA3D HaCk3D
 Domain: http://bitlotto.com/cgi-sys/suspendedpage.cgi
 IP address: 199.58.186.44
 System: LinuxWeb server: Apache
 Notifier stats
This is a CACHE (mirror) page of the site when it was saved by our robot on 2011-11-26 17:04:14

I see that BitLotto.com's domain registrar lists that the BitLotto domain uses BitcoinWebHost for DNS.

There is no A record for BitLotto on either nameserver:
 nameserver: ns1.bitcoinwebhost.com
 nameserver: ns2.bitcoinwebhost.com

So it isn't just that the webserver isn't responding but that access to the site has been either explicitly disabled or there is a configuration error.

This all is consistent with there having been a security breach and then the hosting company (possibly by request of the site owner) disabled the site.

I can't find it now but the question of "what if BitLotto site gets hacked" had been asked and the response from BitLotto was that the wallet is not even on the same host as the website.  There still are problems that could happen (e.g.,  where an attacker changes the bitcoin address to one controlled by the attacker and subsequent bitlotto wagers are lost) but the lotto entries purchased prior to the attack would still be controlled by BitLotto.  Oftentimes the report to Zone-H is filed by the hacker -- in this case, apparently SA3D HaCk3D.  There appears to be thousands of site defacements each month by this attacker so I would think it less than likely that the content of the BitLotto site was altered to scam those attempting to purchase BitLotto entries.

Unfortunately, there is no notice about an attack or other explanation for the outage here nor on the site's Twitter feed:  http://twitter.com/BitLotto   Hopefully a full explanation is forthcoming -- from both BitLotto as well as from BitcoinWebHost.

responded back to them and told them that I had and had not gotten the password email from them.....I have not heard anything back from them since and I have emailed them about 6 or so times over this past week about this issue.....I can't get them to respond back with what my next step is

When it appears that I am missing messages that I should have received i check my spam folder and more often than not ... that's where the messages ended up.  Perhaps that is what is occurring?

You might wish to, in the followup ticket, ask Mt. Gox support to confirm that the e-mail address you think is associated with your username is still intact as if it has been changed, then that would explain why the reset password message isn't making it to you.
7771  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Mt Gox issues on: December 03, 2011, 08:37:27 PM
Be nice if there was a way to contact them that they would actually respond to......

Are you saying that you already opened a ticket and the ticket has not received a response?

Unless those machines have GPUs you need thousands of boxes to get enough revenue to even fill the fridge with beer.

And yes, it would likely be regarded as theft unless permission in advance was granted.

FedEx recently returned a shipment of Bitcoins to the shipper because it said on the invoice it contained bitcoins and "we do not ship currency".

That is a fantastic thing to hear!   It means Bitcoin is getting name recognition if nothing else.

Crikey though ... if package delivery companies like FedEx won't allow bitcoin to be shipped, that could cause a few headaches going forward.
7776  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Operation Pawn Shop on: December 03, 2011, 12:51:12 AM
I'm not entirely sure that pawn shop customers fall in line with Bitcoin's tech savvy libertarian demographic.

However, there are many who would not normally visit a pawn shop but would if only they know the proceeds would be provided in bitcoins.  The advantage to the pawn shop operator is an increase to inventory of more valuable items.   They don't need many boom boxes but jewelry or a nice commercial electric drill and now the operator might become interested.

Incidentally, I did speak to a couple of pawn shop operators.  Until they have customers coming in asking if items can be pawned in exchange for bitcoins, they generally will be less than enthusiastic.  But just like how the UK Copy Writer learned that being the first supplier in the industry to accept bitcoins gives an advantage over the competition ( http://www.ukcopy.co.uk/blog/2011/11/the-amazing-power-of-bitcoin ), the first pawn shop to do this will likely find it to be worth the effort.
7777  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Yahoo News and Witcoin Ripoff on: December 02, 2011, 11:48:57 PM

I think payment should be optional.

Optional payment to vote?  Witcoin required a payment to vote, so there was very little voting.  And thus very little content posted because there was very little financial reward coming from those very few who actually did vote.

After spending a decent amount of time studying the concept, I suggested making it essentially a quasi-gambling website.  The way I proposed it would work made the social voting task to be a form of gambling because there cost to vote was basically a wager.  If you voted and were in the early third of votes for the post, you would profit ... nearly doubling your money.  If you were in the middle third, the amount you paid to vote is returned ... i.e., you broke even.   And those in the bottom, later third got nothing returned.

So that makes an incentive for voting on the good stuff (profit as some of those votes will be in the early third) and a disincentive to vote on the bad stuff (likelihood that you will lose money as fewer people will be voting).

If then the winners (those in the early third) get profit of, let's say, 90% that was lost by the later third then the remaining 10% goes to compensate the content poster and a little bit to the site as well.  This profit potential creates an incentive for better content to be posted.

The problem I couldn't figure out at the time was how easy it would be for an algorithm to game the system.  Instead the rewards should only go to those who truly read the content and vote because the content is good.  At that point it became a problem harder than I wanted to figure out and lost interest.

Thank you Peter for your work in monitoring the marketplace and alerting us on these.  (and for your blog covering GLBSE, http://bitmarketwatch.com )

A crowdfunding bill is making its way through the U.S. Senate  ( http://www.nhbr.com/news/941946-395/crowdfunding-bill-gains-in-congress.html ) but there are restrictions (e.g., max investment by an investor in a company of $1K, cash managed by a qualified third party (i.e., record the identity of investors, etc.).  As such there will still be many businesses that will still be unwilling or unable to participate.  There is so much need for a GLBSE.
7779  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC Transactions - Record Volume on: December 02, 2011, 04:25:03 AM
People moving their bitcoins into password protected wallets maybe?

There was a lot of BitcoinDays Destroyed at about the same time:

But nowhere near as much volume on the exchanges ... so that would correspond with moves to encrypted wallets.  Or, there could be a massive amount of bitcoins that were moved to the exchanges, ... just waiting for the rally to tucker out before unloading en masse.  Or there's mixing going on again.  Or an intentional disinformation campaign. Really hard to tell.
