ASIC mining is more or less the last reasonable step in mining for the foreseeable future.  It is the first time hardware made solely for mining has been introduced so only those who wish to support the network will have them.

Yes initially the power is concentrated in the hands of a few.  If ASICMiner or Avalon wanted to they could have attempted a 51% attack (but this would be shooting themselves in the foot rendering BTC useless and everybody would leave for another coin).

Once there are over 100k ASIC devices it would be very difficult for any government or any company to attempt to attack the network.  The entity would have to design, build, power and then hash over 51%.  In 2 or 3 years that would cost in the billions.  Right now it could conceivably be done for millions.

You'll have to have the socket rewired to have 4-5 outlets, and then put a powerstrip on each circuit. For sustained loads I wouldn't pull 15A off a crappy powerstrip as it will make the strip very hot.  The nicer ones with thick cable (low gauge) should be good.

Congrats on at least getting some of the funds back.  Hopefully you'll be able to recover all the funds and make this a distant memory.
726  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Mining BTC dead? Mining LTC Alive for how long? on: April 23, 2013, 04:27:00 AM
If all the GPU miners moved from BTC to LTC then LTC would have to be 1/4 of the price of BTC before the run in difficulty. Figure mining was barely profitable in 01/13 at $14, so LTC would have to be at least $3.50 with the 20 GH that was on BTC in January. If LTC doesn't go up in price the only ones who would mine would be the ones who expect the coin to go up in value.
727  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Anyone know where I can order some risers today and get them tomorrow? on: April 23, 2013, 04:22:46 AM
It is usually cheaper to go with a 1-2 card setup per computer.  The problem is having that many machines decreases efficiency and takes up more space, needs more ethernet ports and cables in general.

The savings are that you get more watts per dollar as far as PSU is concerned and you don't need to rely on risers and the delays they cause.

It's not that we let immigrants in who have no love for this country.  It's that we fail to teach our youth how to properly do things in the kitchen.  Humping apple pies, making bombs out of pressure cookers.....

I blame the media - it's those damn chef shows!

A tad behind, hence not sure if this was discussed, but did they really close down the entire city of Boston in the hunt for some kid? Could they have used this event to test out what they could and could not do in the future during Martial Law?

Bring in the drones!

739  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon batch [2] countdown! on: April 20, 2013, 10:21:18 AM
That's correct. The value its in the choice. You didn't ordered from batch 2, why since that it was such an easy win, uh?

Yes, I'm greedy, and I feel offended from the bf thing.

Problems?

It's nothing to do with greed and everything to do with initial planning. If you expect a product by a certain time and this product does not arrive in time, then you are in effect losing money - since your plan takes earnings into account. It's not greed, it's simply not wanting to screw a plan sand start over again.

Business plans take time and if you have business partners changing the plan is a royal pia.

It's one thing to expect to receive your product in a timely manner.  I feel for those Batch 1 customers who have not received their orders. Similarly I would feel bad for Batch 2 customers who do not get their units before some Batch 3 customers.

But to openly say that he hopes they delay Batch 3... what else other than greed can you call that part of his statement.  I would love sit next to this guy on a plane after crash landing.  He would open the door and say "well, I'm out.  Sucks to be you loser" and run off.

BTC - bringing out the best in people since 2009  Grin
