As these regulations roll out we (bitcoin peers) need to be vocal in shaping the law. The best way to express our will in the financial arena is with our money. Refuse to pay high fees, do not use systems that limit control of your BTC ; in short, preserve the financial freedom bitcoin can offer. It may even come to acts of civil disobedience.

If bitcoin goes mainstream, there will be huge efforts to take it from the hands of peers and make meta money off of it. The banks are very powerful and when one sees how they run right over governments, it is easy to see that you bitcoin peers are a tiny speck of dirt to them.
Satoshi gave you a tool, but you have to do the work. The real fight for bitcoin is about to begin. Let's work with regulators or the banks will decide the future of bitcoin.

I think it looks good! Thanks for your contribution to the community.  Smiley

very dollar-centric theory. What about pounds, Euros, yen, etc.

When I woke up and saw the price I did not think "wow, over $54" I thought "wow, over £36". This is a global phenomena.

RodeoX: Do you run an exchange? One of the reasons I decided to get active on the forums was to engage with other exchangers on how they got their exchanges going. I'm interested in making bitcoin and bitcoin-related services popular in Africa.
That seems like a worthy and profitable goal.
No I do not run an exchange. I was only trying to spare a fellow peer from the savagery of the general discussions area. Many, many, people show up there and make one of their first posts about they have determined that bitcoin is a ponzi. Or they ask for a loan, or accuse someone of being a scammer.
Not saying you. But a blanket statement about exchanges being scams will not be well received. It only takes a little reading and the application of some common sense to see the real scams.

1. Don't "invest" in bitcoin, use it.
2. Don't ask for a loan.
3. Use existing systems. Don't think PayPal will somehow work this time.
4. Don't "invest" in any bitcoin business without knowing the underwear size of the company principals.

You are right to fear scammers. Where there is money, there are scams. But not everyone is. And the exchanges have less incentive to scam as they are legitimately profitable.

Consider it time to think before posting. Your idea about a post describing the exchanges as scams is a good example. You will be derided for posting such a topic.
Instead you might want to learn more about how exchanges work, and the various difficulties of working with fiat money.

7348  Economy / Speculation / Re: btc123 in #bitcoin today: NYT journalist involved, $50M about to be spent??? on: March 19, 2013, 02:28:17 AM
No reason to believe anything this guy says.

Anyone who publicly shows off about their money and influence can usually be safely ignored.

"I have an NYT journalist"..? Bullshit.

Action: gamble money on his advice.

Doesn't look right.

I thought about this before. My countermeasure is to store a text file with instructions about how to use the wallet.dat file on the same USB drive. I also have shown my wife what to do.

7352  Economy / Speculation / Re: MTGOX is manipulating BTC Value. on: March 18, 2013, 04:55:14 PM
They do have a large influence in the bitcoin economy because of their huge size. But it is not an enforceable monopoly. It is what the market has decided via the choices of users.
Any day a competitor could arrive and change everything.
7353  Bitcoin / Meetups / Anyone in Amsterdam April 1st. ? on: March 18, 2013, 04:41:30 PM

7355  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Paypal not reversible for Bitcoins on: March 18, 2013, 04:04:56 PM

I have told them it was for BTC since its on the invoice.

Wow, maybe they have given up? lol

I would still be very careful. Bitcoin chargeback is the most common scam I see here.
7356  Other / Off-topic / Re: Satoshi Nakamoto is the core group of developers on: March 18, 2013, 04:02:57 PM
Worst kept secret in bitcoin. lol

But what if the core group of developers were Tom Williams, and they used Bruce Wagner as the rube for the marketing arm?
Hmmm. more importantly, how do the secret societies and the gray aliens play into this.  Cheesy

Unfortunately, we are denying your claim because your purchase was for a
virtual, digital, or intangible item, which is not covered under PayPal
Purchase Protection.  We only cover claims involving physical items that
can be shipped and tracked.

This is from Paypal
Interesting. Now tell them the item is bitcoin and see what happens. PayPal also has a policy against any digital currency being traded. Your account can be locked and it can take a long time to get your money out upon locking.

You can try, but when you have been ripped off don't expect much sympathy from the peers in this forum.

You can not do a charge back on virtual goods.   This is my point!
Check the forums, sadly it happens every day.   Sad

7360  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Paypal not reversible for Bitcoins on: March 18, 2013, 03:50:04 PM
If you sell bitcoins for paypal then this is what is likely to happen.

Send bitcoins and receiver sends paypal cash.

Receiver now does a chargeback on the money sent and reclaims his/her money.

Sender now has no bitcoin, no money, and no recourse, as PayPal will never help anyone with a bitcoin related claim. Remember bitcoin competes directly with bitcoin.

DO NOT USE PayPal!!!!
