761  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The NEXT generation of Physical Bitcoins... on: December 19, 2013, 12:08:35 PM
EDIT: This thread is intended for brainstorming about new ways to do Physical bitcoins.  I've started a separate thread for questions about http://www.TitanBtc.com in the Marketplace section.
--

Physical bitcoins are absolutely the BEST way to introduce people to the concept of bitcoins.  I've personally recruited dozens, if not hundreds, of people to the bitcoin community and by far the most effective tool in winning someone over is simply handing them a physical coin.  There's just no replacement for feeling the weight of bitcoin in your hand.

However, after years of UI/UX design for web and product launches, I know that there's no such thing as "too simple".  People need to be led gently down a path to understanding and the current generation of physical bitcoins isn't quite cutting it.  Physical bitcoins, both paper and coin, have the potential to be much more than novelty or collectible.  To realize that potential, I'm convinced that this community needs to have physical bitcoins that:

1. Look and feel like real currency

2. Have ZERO barriers to entry for newcomers

3. Require ZERO pre-existing knowledge of bitcoins to acquire, use and enjoy, and

4. Are inherently secure and impossible to counterfeit.  (Physical theft is always a danger, but that's a separate conversation.)

5. Seamlessly convert to bitcoins in your wallet with a minimum of technical knowledge required.

It's a tall order, but it's an important one to fill. Physical bitcoins serve as a valuable extension to cryptocurrencies and they're a vital bridge to the many people who have yet to embrace the idea of bitcoins.  Effectively reaching this group may allow cryptocurrencies to cross the chasm that exists between early adopters and the mainstream user.  If you have investments in bitcoin, this jump to the mainstream is what reduces risk and increases the return on your investment.  If you believe in the principals behind bitcoin, this jump to the mainstream is what opens people's eyes and brings about real, revolutionary change in our financial system.

Doug Feigelson, Mike Caldwell, Rob Kohr and others have shown us what is possible.  Thank you sincerely.  Let's build on their contributions and move forward.  What's next?  What does this next generation of physical bitcoins look like and how is it technically executed?  I'm looking for feedback from this community and I'm also looking people that are ready to design it and build it as I'm putting my personal/business resources behind this project.

Let me ask you something. Do we have anything other than our computers that physically represents the internet that people can hold onto? No. Yet even though when the internet was new people eventually adapted to it, the same thing will happen to bitcoin as it becomes widely used, everyone already has the tools to use; their smartphone, now they just have to take the next step if they choose to...
762  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is NOT a investment on: December 19, 2013, 12:01:50 PM
You don't invest in USD or EURO or etc... you use them. Bitcoin is a currency, and a tool. It wasn't meant for people to make money. People made money holding Bitcoin while it is in growing phase, is simply an abnormality. Once Bitcoin reach user saturation, there probably will be no more such occurrences.

Also Bitcoin may forever be an obscure experimental internet currency, that may never make it mainstream. There are no guarantee that it will become mainstream. So user saturation MAY already happened.

Sounds like you don't like the price of bitcoin going up!! Well that's too bad for you then. Bitcoin is the peoples money currency it will continue to become worth more and more dollars. You should be more worried about USD and the EURO as there is trouble brewing at the Federal Reserve and we could see the start of a implosion of the USD by April of next year. The markets as we know them today would collapse, the collapse in 2008 proved just how interconnected the markets are to one another; we live in a globalized marketplace.

763  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Getting around a government ban on BTC on: December 19, 2013, 01:36:26 AM
Has the government ban prevented you from getting weed?

Indeed. Bans don't scare anybody.

Focus should be more and how can we use it differently other than
trading it for FIAT to get rich quick or holding it 'till the apocalypse is over.
We need actual uses for BTC. Maybe the Altcoins could play a role in this too.

Shame to see cryptosextoys temporarily not accepting Sexcoins anymore. Stuff like
this is what's going to get it going. Actual uses for all the decentralized, anonymous,
instant, worldwide characteristics of our precious coins.

LOL, I hadn't thought that far. But yes, even if you dislike weed it could be the alt-coin you need to purchase bitcoin.
How could anybody not love weed? It's the bitcoin of plants!

I think bans do scare the weak hearted bitcoin investors, and as soon as the dust cloud settles down everything returns to normal.

Check out this: http://fiatleak.com/

Similar concept but with more info. I haven't followed it against the blockchain so I don't know how accurate it is.

It's actually http://fiatleak.org/ now.

765  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Getting around a government ban on BTC on: December 19, 2013, 12:41:10 AM
Thailand has already banned BTC and China seems to be coming down hard on it.  The possibility of more countries banning it (including the US and China) seems very real.  What would an exchange look like that is able to get around this?

I can imagine a website in a BTC-friendly country (Denmark?) that displays an orderbook that is only updated every hour (for example).  At the top of the hour, you can see the latest status of the orderbook.  Then you click the order you want to transact with and you are given P2P payment instructions for a buy (PayPal, Dwolla, etc) or a deposit address for a sell.  The website could maintain a reputation tracking system for each member.  New members would need to built up their rep with small transactions before they are given permission for larger transactions.  The time in between orderbook updates (1 hour?) would give people the chance to complete their transaction.

My feeble mind tells me this would be a great way to enable people to get fiat into BTC no matter what the governments do, but I'm pretty sure you guys are going to poke about a thousand holes in it. Smiley

Sorry if China has banned bitcoin why is there still a lot of trading in China? (check fiatleak.org)

People brag about ripping people off? I've never seen anyone brag about scamming someone in my entire life.

However, the person who got scammed often speaks up, in order to get consolation.

You must live in a small world. There are all kinds of stories of people who have admitted to their friends people who they have ripped off. Heck I am sure you have told your friends some of the evil and dark things you have done before, if you have any friends? Smiley

The problem people's friends are talkers too.

768  Other / Beginners & Help / My newb story.. on: December 18, 2013, 12:48:19 PM
I started to really take notice in Bitcoin 4 to 5 months ago.

Recently I put an add up in the Toronto kijijiji looking for an Avalon miner and was approached by a person named Jennifer Morrison at mjennifer465@gmail.com who has a KnC Saturn that she was selling for 5BTC's. Thinking the ad was posted in the Toronto section I figured this person was close to me, so I offered to pay them half up front and half once I get confirmation, a tracking number and could confrim the package is coming to me. Well things started going sideways Carley Vanhorn at carleyv7@gmail.com started getting involved by sending me his wallet ID "17UwNEP1sQ2zw9pH9sGh3X6iUyb8KoKsJb", once they had received the 2.5BTC Jennifer demanded the full amount, telling me Carley her husband wouldn't ship it until he got full payment. Jennifer emailed me through Carley's account.

So I requested they refund the 2.5BTC's, my request fell on def ears. I admit if I had done a little more research I would have probably requested a Escrow upfront but hey at least I didn't lose all 5BTC's (phew), but it's still a blow.

I am telling everyone this story so share my experience and since it's normal human behavior to brag about ripping off people I going to guess that this person or persons is going to brag about at some point and I hope whoever they tell reports them in the bitcoin community!! Smiley

Thanks

After seeing the story about the guy who lost 7 million dollars with of Bitcoins the price was high, and Stacey (at RT News/Max Keiser) recently saying he's lost wallets in the beginning that held 20 bitcoins or so in them, I am wondering how many lost bitcoins there are out there?

Smiley
770  Economy / Speculation / Re: What's happening in bitcoin today? on: December 18, 2013, 11:21:51 AM
Look like bitcoin is going to drop into the $100 range again very soon. It was so much fun when it was around the $1k plus range!

Oh well.
771  Economy / Speculation / Re: What's happening in bitcoin today? on: December 17, 2013, 11:32:00 AM
Looking at fiatleak.org (.com is gone) it looks like either China has blocked the transactions of bitcoins or no one is trading bitcoins anymore in China because the amount of bitcoins being traded is very few.  Sad

Fiatleak.com is gonzo now? Sad

The price is starting to fall like a stone, usually this happens when something bad happens in the media.

Anything?

Howcto hard reset? My memory is full so i cant change or delete anything.

Can you power cycle?

What you mean?

Turn it off.  Let 30 seconds pass.  Turn it on.

Yes, i restored default now it wont connect with my lan (no ip to connect from)

If your Avalon has been reset to default the IP will now be 192.168.0.100 on your Avalon. You need to change the IP on your computer to 192.168.0.10 to be able to connect to 192.168.0.100 using a web browser.
777  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: My MtGox account hacked... Lost $60,000... :'( on: December 12, 2013, 11:10:58 AM
Sounds like Mt Gox needs to start providing people with Authenticator keys, I am surprised they aren't already doing do as one of the largest if not the largest bitcoin exchange to protect themselves and their customers.

778  Other / Beginners & Help / Escrow services question on: December 11, 2013, 08:08:09 PM
Is there any Escrow service that is better than another?

I am looking to possibly use one to buy some Blu Fury's. As I got burned once giving someone I didn't know half the payment up front to something they never shipped or intended too I don't want to go down that path and the 4 hour drive to timbuk2 one way do to a do a face to face meet its worth it.

Thanks,

Actually during the October hack, hackers used avatar directory of forum to upload "backdoors", so admins have paused all profile's from uploading avatars.

Where do I edit the line where you have your BTC number so I can add info there on my account?

Thanks,
