763  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Post-2007 SecondLife (sans admins), here we come! on: September 11, 2012, 05:56:46 PM
Thanks for the insight. I always thought it was a very interesting project, especially as a Stephenson fan. I have been frustrated every time I tried to get simple answers to tb one questions...glad I finally ran into someone with firsthand experience.
764  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Post-2007 SecondLife (sans admins), here we come! on: September 11, 2012, 05:05:11 PM
How much first-hand experience did you have with SL?
I read a little about it because of their currency. I remember the article about the first "virtual millionaire" that made many waves...someone who was buying and selling SL real estate.

It's been many years, but didn't they have a problem with hyperinflation at some point? Can you tell us more about how Linden Labs controlled and changed the money supply in that timeline?
I know that LL sold SL currency directly. Did they allow you to withdraw into USD as well? Did that ever change?
765  Economy / Speculation / Re: 1DkyBEKt5S2GDtv7aQw6rQepAvnsRyHoYM on: September 10, 2012, 07:56:24 PM
I thought it was on the basis of the fact that when pirate sold off a massive amount of BTC to "manipulate the market" down from $9 or so, this address had 80K BTC of withdrawals just shortly before that happened...
In context, his claims looked like obvious trolling to me. (Like most of his comments did.)

Currently the hypothesis that Pirate was acting as a passthrough to Zeek seems like the most likely scenario. That would mean he had nothing to do with the large address.
766  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin mining operation. Possible start? on: September 10, 2012, 05:37:06 PM
I wouldn't invest in any GPU mining hardware unless they can pay themselves off in about 3 months.

Even if they are delayed, ASICs are coming. The cheapest is the BFL Jalapeno which should provide approx 3.5 GH/s on a fraction of the electricity a GPU uses. Combine that with the reward-halving that will occur in December and I don't see how you can pay off new GPU hardware as difficulty skyrockets, unless you have access to free electricity.

I'm in pretty much the same boat having just gotten interested in bitcoins. For now I pre-ordered a Jalapeno and decided to just mine what I can using my gaming rig (~280 MH/s) until ASICs are released and more info is available.
Yes, they are. And if BFL delivers on time we're looking at 7 weeks max before the network power is drastically raised.
I don't think there's any GPU hardware available that pays off in 3 months in the best case (IE barely any difficulty hikes.) What boggles my mind is all these posts from people "just looking into mining" who haven't looked at the difficulty charts. We've had HUGE increases in difficulty every single adjustment period for a while now. Even without adding ASICs into the mix, it's unlikely new purchased GPUs will pay off unless the price goes up drastically. If you're counting on the price going up drastically - just buy bitcoins. Make a profit instead of breaking even.
767  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Response on: September 10, 2012, 02:06:16 PM
I am inclined to agree with Memorydealers. Don't buy the "this was a prank from the start" line at all.
Just look at the chat between Memorydealers and Matthew above. It's very telling.

Guy is a sociopath and a piece of shit con-artist.
Yes. Especially after hearing the radio interview one thing is clear: he's a sociopath and is mentally incapable of sincerity or remorse.
768  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: pirate payments list -- accounts paid: 23/459 on: September 10, 2012, 06:19:20 AM
This is not an actual judgement of the Bitcoin Police, but when I see it on the forums my brain plays a little "Somone call a whaaambulance." sound clip.
I'm sure they mean well, but they did choose quite a silly name.

Did you check out https://localbitcoins.com/ or http://btcnearme.com/ ?

nah I didn't, thanks for posting the sites

looks like the closest on localbit is 43.3 miles unfortunately

i posted on btcnear, hopefully i'll get a response
Hopefully Bitfloor will be back online soon. That's the easiest way to buy small amounts without paying huge fees.
770  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Looking to purchase first bitcoin on: September 10, 2012, 06:01:08 AM
so what your saying is even if a payment is made via credit card/paypal through escrow, the
money can still later be taken back even after the escrow transaction is complete?
not sure how you pay PayPal through escrow
what usually happens is Bitcoin are held in escrow while other payment method clears, or goods delivered etc.

PayPal is reversible, even when the person spending it doesn't want it to be was my point. Bitcoin is not.

hmmm :9, alright

well thanks for your help man, I guess i'll try and seek out other options.

I've never had any Bitcoins stolen or lost. What am I doing wrong?
772  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: September 10, 2012, 04:17:56 AM
Thanks - that makes sense. I am but a simple software engineer.

I'm glad to hear you guys are doing well, though!
773  Economy / Services / Re: [WTB] Your signature space on: September 10, 2012, 04:14:02 AM
Hmmm....advertising for BFL? Would you be willing to answer some questions about BFL? I have these pesky ethics I stick to.
774  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: September 10, 2012, 04:03:59 AM
I know someone who wanted to put up something worth investing in on GLBSE...I've never looked into it closely. (I believe they are still in the process of doing so.) Could you briefly touch on the obvious reasons?
775  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: September 10, 2012, 03:31:55 AM
You can't force someone to sell something they own (equity). Not unless it's done at gun point, anyway.
You can't "force" them to resign, either. Hopefully they will work out a deal.
776  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: September 10, 2012, 03:16:08 AM
Thank goodness that Bitcoin magazine has officially accepted his resignation from all responsibilities. This is the first step to recovery..

Bitcoin Magazine now has my full support..

They were innocent victims and have responded quickly and forcefully.. I applaud their behavior..

AR

Not from me.  Not until I know he's no longer making any money from the magazine.  I don't care if he lost his fancy title.

That's like saying if Matthew just happened to own Intel stock, you'd stop buying any more computers because he "might" be making money from stock appreciation and dividends. Makes no sense man.

Matthew is out as Editor in Chief; he's not even on the team (http://bitcoinmagazine.net/about-us-2/) anymore. He basically committed career-suicide (hope it was worth it for him). Who knows if there is any equity/stock option arrangement over there, but if there is it's not like Bitcoin can just break their contracts with current or past employees on a whim. Don't blame Bitcoin Magazine who started distancing themselves from Matthew almost immediately after he made the bet.

Not really. It's like saying if he co-founded Intel and owned 25% of their stock, I'd stop buying Intel machines and use AMD, a perfectly reasonable alternative. Which I would. Hopefully they truly do distance themselves from him and buy his equity out.
777  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: I'm giving 100% ROI away to anyone who thinks pirate is a fraud on: September 10, 2012, 02:59:17 AM
Really this bitcoin experiment is showing us that we need some sort of system where by we pay 20% to the government for services like policing etc and a small percentage to the banks for handling transactions so we dont get scammed.

No it doesn't.  It just shows you need personal responsibility.

what about the personal responsibility of the people who didn't read the wording of the bet closely?
Obvious troll is obvious. /ignored
778  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which exchange website should I use? on: September 10, 2012, 02:53:38 AM
Don't use an exchange, use a vendor with badass fee's. He has worked well for a lot of people and is very active.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=87094.0

1% below mtgox last price, so many ways to deposit, and no other fees Cheesy

This is currently the best option.
779  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: September 10, 2012, 01:59:25 AM
Matt is invited to come on DonkDown radio on Wed. to discuss this matter.

I feel a follow-up interview to his first one is needed at this point.

I hope you play him some clips of the other show.
780  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: MATTHEW FIRED FROM BITCOIN MAGAZINE on: September 10, 2012, 01:56:32 AM
Cool. Let me know when they announce that he has 0 stake and gains nothing from the sale & promotion of their magazine.
