Couldn't a sub-contractor system work? A large, recognized courier system would hire sub-contractors to handle deliveries. This way, even if the individual courier gets in trouble, the actual agency would have plausible deniability.
Why would anyone want to be a courier if it meant assuming responsibility for the package contents with absolutely no assurance it wasn't something illegal or dangerous? I don't see what demand there would be for this service that did not involve delivering something stolen, illegal, dangerous, or at least sensitive. I would rather the infrastructure remain and one person taking a fall, than having the entire system fall apart. Since you would be going through a legitimate courier, the client would also have plausible deniability for use, since the parent company has legitimate use. Now it seems like more of a dead drop system than a courier system. |

I've been working on several projects simultaneously, about half of which fall under the UBTC umbrella. As you can imagine, it's been hard to find time to update the website for Unofficial BTC, let alone make any sort of announcements. Hopefully, over the next few days, I'll manage to give it some of the attention it deserves.

My history teacher mentioned me for Scoreing the Highest in the school on standardized tests, yet I was on the boarder of failing his class- A's on his tests/quizes, never did any homework, or did it for 5min got board, and put it in a pile to do later, but never turned it in.

Just to be clear, I have never had a problem with Mt. Gox and I use them on a regular basis. I've even corresponded with Mark and others and they've been nothing but professional.
A "trusted by Mt. Gox" emblem, however, seems to me will be as helpful as belonging to the Better Business Bureau: giving the impression of more integrity than what's been earned and easily susceptible to corruption. My first boss once told me that the BBB kept files on businesses with details of customer complaints and your file "conveniently" improved once you joined and began paying dues. I never had an opportunity to verify this, but the point is, the checks and balances necessary to prevent it just aren't there.

So is this still happening or what? I'm still definitely interested in helping out. I won't take BTC as payment, but I can't guarantee I can drop everything to process a request. I believe so? I think edd is throwing something together website/donation wise, but I'm available to train you guys whenever. And I would prefer to actually train you, since the process is pretty involved. This is just compiling information and then posting it for the admins/mods to review right? No funny business? I imagine a bunch of us can help, pro bono or not. Yup! If any of you find a case you'd like to handle, let me know! You can start compiling the information right away, even though I'll send you the process information after I hear from you. For your first case, I'd like it if the report is submitted to me, first, before you send it to theymos. I don't want to trouble him with training a bunch of you guys, especially since you might get the wrong impression of him when he tells you what you need to fix (I've heard complaints that he sounds a little robotic...). The site just needs some final touches. This weekend was my wedding anniversary so I was away from a computer. I'm at my "day job" right now but should have something to show this evening. |

An equally useful approach would be to put General Motors in charge of automobile safety standards. I expect we will soon see accelerated processing for "trusted" vendors and their customers. This is one of those sad moments when you realize your child is maturing and turning out to be just as evil and stupid as his parents.
Ummm how exactly do these two compare? The way I read it they're just saying that they'll share these verification details with the public so peeps can know that the person on the other end is who he/she say she is. That way you don't have to run around too much knocking on wrong doors with a bat sticking up over your shoulder, while trying to collect if you've been ripped off. All this is going to do is make scamming harder, or not? I don't believe Mt. Gox said anywhere that they will share verification details. All they are doing is vouching for vendors who have gone through their verification process, giving them permission to use a logo that basically says "Mt. Gox vouches for us." As LoupGaroux point out, this opens the door to all manner of shady practices. It doesn't matter if Mt. Gox succumbs to the temptation to use their position for unethical dealings or not, the opportunity for it exists. |

This would provide the public with some assurance that personal vendettas are unlikely to gain any traction, and Standard Operating Procedures would make it easier for the original investigator to pass along a job to someone else if it he or she were unable to continue for whatever reason.
The minute you start representing this in terms of some kind of formal, professional or accredited service, you're going to run into licensing requirements in many jurisdictions. There's also the question of the purpose of these investigations. Labelling someone a scammer after the fact has limited value. It might matter to people who want to remain part of this community, but it's not going to matter a damn to those who are going to cut and run from Bitcoin unless the information obtained leads to legal consequences or finds its way to potential victims of their next venture. Perhaps I should have used the word "standardized" instead of "formal." I also fail to see why presenting evidence solely for the purpose of applying a scammer tag for the bitcointalk.org forum would require any licensing in any jurisdiction. |
