1. What is the size of the ultimate 'dark pool' of cash and Bitcoins sitting on the sidelines in their Mt. Gox accounts?
The only question that you posted that I can even remotely guess at is a statistic I saw put out stating that only 10% of dark pool orders are "dark only". I don't know if that meant 10% of the quantity of orders or if that was 10% of total BTC volume in those orders.

Awesome! Here's the money quote: You must not have seen this then: Rather than support the currency with towers of gold bricks, Washington issues the currency by "fiat," or by decree. The good news about fiat is it allows us to create more money -- trillions more --when the economy tanks.

For example, if a small investor places a bid for 50BTC above all the others there will probably be 0 reaction.
That's not what I've seen. When I want to do a trade but only if the order is filled at about the current best offer, I'll jump in front of the current best offer by a tiny amount. Then often a bot or another trader will often jump in front of mine. When Mt. Gox supported websockets, this tool http://www.thenewsh.com/~newsham/x/mtgox/ showed the bots in action. It was quite entertaining watching that display when another bot or another trader would walk the first bot higher or lower and then snag an order at a better price. As far as offering a dark pool, I'm in favor. There are numerous tools used in finance. I don't know why we would want to hobble Bitcoin by discouraging the use of one of the more valuable tools.

When starting the bitcoin client when no wallet.dat existed, the client will show one address. At that point is the bitcoin address pool really already populated with the 100 addresses?
I suspect it only adds them the first time you explicitly click "New".
Thus on a new installation if I were to simply to have shut down Bitcoin and backed up wallet.dat, that backup would not have any of the addresses that are then added to the wallet after the first time "New" is clicked.

If you restart bitcoind with -addnode=173.242.112.53 it will get into a block eventually.
That node will include the ultra-micro transaction even though it includes no fee?

Hello, I've tried configuring the bitcoin.conf (rpcport=8332) file for MacOS but I won't even listen to that port. Is RPC not supported in MacOS port?
Are you trying to connect from a different host? If so, you'll need to set: rpcallowip= - https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Running_Bitcoin
