8783  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How much cash and Bitcoins is sitting on the sidelines in their Mt. Gox accounts on: April 11, 2011, 11:02:30 AM
1. What is the size of the ultimate 'dark pool' of cash and Bitcoins sitting on the sidelines in their Mt. Gox accounts?

The only question that you posted that I can even remotely guess at is a statistic I saw put out stating that only 10% of dark pool orders are "dark only".  I don't know if that meant 10% of the quantity of orders or if that was 10% of total BTC volume in those orders.
8784  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin accounting... on: April 11, 2011, 10:36:00 AM
Each sale could have a different exchange rate...complicates things for accounting even more.

IAS 21 covers this, I believe.
- http://www.slideshare.net/achawla/ias-21-foreign-currencies

Apparently there are multiple methods allowed, including using an average exchange rate, or using previous day's closing rate.

8785  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin by SMS on: April 11, 2011, 09:53:39 AM
There's now an SMS service that allows some bitcoin transactions where the charges are billed to the mobile phone bil (for those in Belgium and the Netherlands):

8786  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Crowdfunding 1200 BTC (260 BTC pledged) for Automata RTS Game on: April 10, 2011, 04:34:44 PM
The following is kind of related to your concept of crowdfunding where the "investor" gets early access to the final product.

I hadn't known of this cinemashares approach before so I'm sharing the link:
  http://www.cinemashares.com/about.html

Apparently they believe these ideas to be patentable:

You must not have seen this then:

Rather than support the currency with towers of gold bricks, Washington issues the currency by "fiat," or by decree. The good news about fiat is it allows us to create more money -- trillions more --when the economy tanks.
8788  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Can't withdraw BTC or LRUSD from bitcoin-central on: April 10, 2011, 06:49:19 AM
I emailed support@bitcoin-central.net about this but I have BTC stuck at BC and can't get it out (500 server error). Any way to get hold of this guy?

This has happened before.  The last contact with the operator, that I'm familiar with, was this March 30th update:

8789  Economy / Marketplace / Re: MTGox and dark pool on: April 08, 2011, 05:07:42 PM
For example, if a small investor places a bid for 50BTC above all the others there will probably be 0 reaction.
That's not what I've seen.  When I want to do a trade but only if the order is filled at about the current best offer, I'll jump in front of the current best offer by a tiny amount.  Then often a bot or another trader will often jump in front of mine.

When Mt. Gox supported websockets, this tool http://www.thenewsh.com/~newsham/x/mtgox/ showed the bots in action.  It was quite entertaining watching that display when another bot or another trader would walk the first bot higher or lower and then snag an order at a better price.

As far as offering a dark pool, I'm in favor.  There are numerous tools used in finance.  I don't know why we would want to hobble Bitcoin by discouraging the use of one of the more valuable tools.
8790  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: do new installs automatically generate 100 addresses? on: April 06, 2011, 08:49:40 PM
When starting the bitcoin client when no wallet.dat existed, the client will show one address.  At that point is the bitcoin address pool really already populated with the 100 addresses?

I suspect it only adds them the first time you explicitly click "New".

Thus on a new installation if I were to simply to have shut down Bitcoin and backed up wallet.dat, that backup would not have any of the addresses that are then added to the wallet after the first time "New" is clicked.
8791  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Transactions too small for the network, what happens to them? on: April 06, 2011, 08:05:57 PM
If you restart bitcoind with -addnode=173.242.112.53 it will get into a block eventually.

That node will include the ultra-micro transaction even though it includes no fee?

For microtransactions, here are some suggestions:

8795  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: RPC & MacOS Bitcoin on: April 05, 2011, 08:45:16 AM
Hello,
I've tried configuring the bitcoin.conf (rpcport=8332) file for MacOS but I won't even listen to that port. Is RPC not supported in MacOS port?

Are you trying to connect from a different host?   If so, you'll need to set:
  rpcallowip=

8796  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Microtransaction industry moving forward on: April 04, 2011, 07:56:19 PM
#1 on Hacker News right now is a new microtransaction link sharing service GumRoad:

Of course, Bitcoin is already there:

I saw BTCex, but only 0.21 was being sold there and I bought it all. Are there any other BTC->WMZ exchanges? Or anybody selling WMZ?

There are buy and sell orders for WMZ on Bitcoin OTC:
