Is it your claim that you only offered to be a shill bumper this one time, in a heated moment of greed?  Or have you been engaged in the paid bumping of announcement threads for an extended period of time?
882  Other / Meta / Re: Moving to Cloudflare on: November 30, 2017, 02:14:59 PM
With regret, I am (for now) admitting defeat on the DDoS front, and we will soon be using using Cloudflare to protect against DDoS attacks. This change is in progress, and will take ~24 hours for everyone to see.

I really don't believe in willingly putting a man-in-the-middle in your HTTPS like this, but my homebrew DDoS mitigation has been one of my biggest time sinks for the last 6 months or so, and the necessary servers are still pretty expensive. If I had more manpower, then I would prioritize maintaining our own DDoS protection, but with me as the only sysadmin and current-software developer, it's become unsustainable.

I especially dislike Cloudflare, which I'm almost certain is basically owned by US intelligence agencies. I considered several alternatives to Cloudflare, but the smaller ones (eg. Stackpath and OVH) didn't strike me as reputable/competent enough, and the enterprise-targeted ones like Incapsula and Akamai are around $3500/month. Even though $3500/month seems absolutely ridiculous to me, I was seriously considering Incapsula due to its pretty good reputation, but then they were having all sorts of technical issues while I was trying to set it up. So I gave up for now and went with Cloudflare.

The Internet is seriously flawed if everyone needs to huddle behind these huge centralized anti-DDoS companies in order to survive...

The security implications are that Cloudflare can read everything you send to or receive from the server, including your cleartext password and any PMs you send or look at. They can't access the database arbitrarily, though: they can only see data that passes over the Internet.

Tor users and benevolent-bot operators: please wait a couple of days for the current DDoS to subside, and then post your complaints here. I am able and willing to tune Cloudflare to be minimally annoying. Not every Cloudflare site has to do that "Using Tor? Here's an impossible captcha" thing.

Interesting.... nothing bad could happen here....  Huh  Are the DDoS's using the search feature?  What else could be disabled to mitigate?  I can only imagine the types of attacks the site gets but the decision seems quick and a bit extreme, haven't there been worse attacks?  I honestly don't have anything to hide from the NSA but I do value my privacy. And the general thought of the NSA collecting usernames/passwords on bitcointalk users is going to give me nightmares.  Sad

maybe eliminating the title and coins under the name could potentially avoid this perception issue while still providing the functionality. Provide the paid option to allow lower restrictions, fine, but is there a need to add the rank to every post, PM, etc. that the account does?
People like to be recognized, and the special title is essentially a recognition that a small amount of money has been donated.

Well this is my issue... is this "fee" supposed to be for recognition, or like theymos stated, is it supposed to be just for enabling a newbie to post images and lift some restrictions?  theymos stated this was not supposed to be recognition of a donation.

A lot to go through here.  Undecided

For reference, archived with embedded images: https://archive.is/wUeEd

If anyone does not believe me, I am more than happy to share my account details with trusted members of the forum to verify PMs. If you want to do this, request in the thread, otherwise peace out brothers!

Has anyone verified the PMs yet?

EDIT:
I've logged into the account and verified the screenshots are not faked.

Elon Musk is not Satoshi Nakamoto.
I am Satoshi Nakamoto.  Smiley

I think the price of a copper membership would probably be more than a low level account. If memory serves me right, I was able to sell "member" accounts for the equivalent of roughly $20 worth of BTC (prices were in BTC) in 2014/2015. I paid about $38 worth of bitcoin for my copper membership plus the tx fee.

With both buying an account and buying a copper membership, there is no guarantee you will come out on top if you buy either of these with the intention of using them to scam. If you buy a member account (or a copper membership) with the intention of using this to scam, you will need to steal at least $20 (or $40) just to break even, and if you do not, the value of your investment will presumably go to zero when your scam attempt is exposed, and receive negative trust. In both cases, one can presumably make money in non-scamming ways.

If you are only comparing the price... if the title gives them a better chance of successfully scamming for more money, it could be worth the increase?... especially right now when it is a new rank and not even listed or really explained anywhere except this thread. People send coins to accounts that create a new account with a similar name to an escrows or another trusted member, now they have the option to get a new rank and allowing them to put even more spin on how their account is "trusted".

It just seems like this could be helpful to a scammer, maybe eliminating the title and coins under the name could potentially avoid this perception issue while still providing the functionality. Provide the paid option to allow lower restrictions, fine, but is there a need to add the rank to every post, PM, etc. that the account does?

I think it also creates a false perception when a legendary member buys this and gets "Copper Member". If you had clean feedback, you would inaccurately be perceived as more trusted, or at least a higher ranked account than other legendary members who do not have "Copper Member" under their name.

I'm also not sure if you are helping or hurting my argument here... since a lot of people here see you as a scammer (and a good handful seem to think you are an active scammer)... If my argument is valid, you, as a scammer, would not want to lose the copper membership option!  Tongue
888  Other / Meta / Re: Newbies can now pay a small fee to enable images on: November 28, 2017, 07:55:13 PM
As above said, they usually just buy an account to make the thread anyway (and oftentimes they're hacked accounts). Images were only removed in the first place because some idiot was botting the forum with porn. I doubt allowing them to post images will suddenly make them invincible scammers but I'd rather them do it on a fresh account they just bought.

I may just not have enough insight into this but I feel like if I'm a scammer who currently buys accounts, it seems like it would make more sense to now buy the Copper Membership.

I would think that account sales come with their obstacles for scammers as well... if they are not using an escrow, they can easily get scammed themselves. If they are using an escrow, they're probably paying for it. They could buy an account that gets tagged 3 days later... etc.  Yes, this may ultimately reduce a piece of account sales between users, which I'm all for... but it seems like a double-edged sword which gives scammers a quicker, cleaner way to establish a new account and setup a thread for scamming via ICOs/altcoins. If I'm a scammer, sending stolen coins to theymos from my last scam, so I can get back to scamming quickly, seems like a much faster and cleaner solution for the scammer.

I'm also not sure why they need a rank of "Copper Member"... if this is just to post images, provide the access to the account and maybe list something on the profile page of the account indicating they've paid to post images, I don't think it's necessary to list them as a "Copper Member" everywhere... or that they should even get 2 coins under their name.

... Would it be considered abusive if a DT member left neutral feedback on new Copper Member accounts explaining what a copper membership is?  Grin
889  Other / Meta / Re: Newbies can now pay a small fee to enable images on: November 28, 2017, 04:14:31 PM
It's basically just a rank to automatically whitelist you and enable you to post images (which can be vital for some users).

I feel like it would be helpful to scammers starting up an ICO, altcoin, etc. and posting all of their re-used images. I realize there are legitimate reasons for legitimate people... maybe it's just my pessimistic perception of which group is helped more with this rank.  Undecided
890  Other / Meta / Re: Newbies can now pay a small fee to enable images on: November 28, 2017, 02:28:07 PM
Theymos, is there an updated number of how many people have purchased it so far?

45
Search by position: "Copper Member"

I really don't get the point of this rank but it doesn't bother me enough to rant about it.  Wink
891  Other / Meta / Re: New Gold member rank? on: November 27, 2017, 07:42:13 PM
It's for newbies who wants their restrictions (such as posting images) to be lifted. You basically get it for a small donation. Details: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2385104
"Gold member" I believe represents a custom title that he wrote himself, he could edit it to anything he wants. I don't think I could consider the two coins as a bug because It was meant for newbies so It made sense to have two only.

Seems like a bug (or just confusing) to me if the main point of the forum rank/coins are there to distinguish a users activity count. I realize copper should probably only have 2 coins because it is for newbies but I've always seen the coins as a way to symbolically represent an activity count.
892  Other / Meta / Re: My bitcointalks account was hacked on: November 22, 2017, 02:17:40 PM
HOW TO CONTACT WITH THEYMOS OR CYRUS?

All you can do is send a PM to Cyrus first and wait 2 weeks, if he doesn't answer, PM theymos, then wait again. Account recovery can sometimes take months and is not guaranteed. If you post a signed message on this thread, DT members can leave feedback on the account to warn others.
893  Other / Meta / Re: Hacked, please send red trust. on: November 20, 2017, 03:38:24 PM
I've tried a few different ways but cannot verify.
OP, if this is legitimate, correct the signed message.
894  Economy / Reputation / Re: Lauda, Sold bitcointalk accounts, Giving neg for others for same reason. on: November 18, 2017, 06:34:33 PM
I'll start... just this one.   Shocked
I can only respond to this with: "Why don't you want theymos proving Quickseller wrong about you?". Unless you ask theymos to list your alts, any statements of anyone should be considered invalid.  Tongue

theymos is welcome to list my nonexistent alts, although I'm sure he has better things to do.  Grin
895  Economy / Reputation / Re: Lauda, Sold bitcointalk accounts, Giving neg for others for same reason. on: November 18, 2017, 03:25:50 PM
Well I certainly would love to know all of Lauda's alts and Quickseller's alts... and everyone else on the forum.
Everyone man up (or woman up) and start posting their alts and all of the accounts they control! I'll even take them in PM Smiley

I'll start... just this one.   Shocked
896  Other / Meta / Re: Marketplace trust on: November 17, 2017, 08:05:31 PM
I agree that instead of naivity I better had chosen the word innocence. Thanks for the correction.
I believe you had it right the first time. Actual newbies are in fact naive when it comes to this forum, its philosophies, and how it operates. I'm not saying they are all idiots but they usually do not understand how the forum itself operates and, maybe more importantly, why. And until you understand through experience and/or reading tons of old threads, it's hard not to fall down the rabbit hole of conspiracy.

Had you stayed a newbie for 7 years you would have been able to stay easily clear from all the corrupting political intrueges that are going on among top-legies.
I don't know what a legie is but I'm going to assume it's some sort of term for a Legendary account, which has nothing to do with the trust system.

If you are referring to DT members, I don't believe most DT members even know each other or communicate. There are certainly a few "cliques" that develop but this is expected human behavior to me. It certainly doesn't automatically mean they are colluding. I assume you have some actual examples to show here with all of the political intrigue going on?

Perhaps you still have been able to stay 'clean'. That would deserve you sincere congratuations.
Corruption and dishonesty exist all over the world, but I believe the majority of the administration, moderation, and trust system of this forum are "clean".

However money and power expose people's ugliest nature. Have you not pushed others down in order to stay on a top spot of the hill?
I've made no money due to being on DT and the power is a bit overrated.

And no, I've never pushed anyone down to get or remain on DT, which I would certainly not consider a "top spot on the hill".  I've only tried to learn the ins and outs of the forum and have always left honest and accurate feedback to try and help legitimate members of this community.
897  Other / Meta / Re: Marketplace trust on: November 16, 2017, 07:52:59 PM

Big words coming from an account 1 day old and from someone who does not even know what DT1 and DT2 means.
 Roll Eyes

One needs not to be a Legendary to speak truth. In fact you'll probably find more truth with unspoiled naive newbies than with legies who are knee deep stuck in political intregues to protect their status.

One who seeks out truth from naivety is likely to have a lack of experience, wisdom, and/or judgement.

Not sure what the Legendary status has to do with any of this, I could have been on this forum for 7 years and be a newbie... but knowledge, likely escaping you, is needed to understand this.
898  Other / Meta / Re: Marketplace trust on: November 16, 2017, 06:07:16 PM
Oh, the whole trust system here is abused to the bone. Expose a scammer with power and he will give you red trust. Expose more scammers and you'll be considered by others as a scammer yourself. There is absolutely no objectivity at all in the trust system here.

Big words coming from an account 1 day old and from someone who does not even know what DT1 and DT2 means.
 Roll Eyes

What does DT1 and DT2 mean?

900  Other / Meta / Re: My account (Odalv) got hacked on: November 15, 2017, 08:47:46 PM
November 13th I was trying to recover my account, but did not receive email.
I did not receive any notification about email change. I did not change email.

Have you ever used the same password for your e-mail account that you had been using in the past on this forum? (not including the password you set in June)... or have you always had different passwords on each?

I had different password. I think. This is not my primary email a read every day. Time to change my email password :-)

Just want to rule out the possibility of a recent hack/leak and trying to determine if there is a possibility your e-mail account itself was compromised, due to the 2015 hack. My thought being that someone has cracked your password from before 2015. Assuming the e-mail & forum account had the same password <2015, and you have kept your e-mail password the same, the password could be used to get into your e-mail and utilize the reset link.
