See you in the UK later this year!
902  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What would you sell at? on: January 20, 2014, 08:05:56 PM
Changing the rules of my post, I'd like two in this situation, one to keep and one to cash out. Of course, I'd love hundreds...

If the price kept rising and rising then I would never, ever cash out, not until it got silly and I could live off the Bitcoin lol.

Lol, yeah. Although everyone knows we're all gong to be rich next year. Hold on to your hat, and your Bitcoin!

Yeah I noticed this too in the UK, nothing on their UK site about Bitcoin payment. Hopefully this will come soon.
905  Other / Off-topic / Re: I wish I could rent a time machine. on: January 20, 2014, 04:30:13 PM
Travel back to 2011, buy £1500 in BTC and exchange it back in modern day.

Millionaire!

If you have the beauty of a wish, why would you only rent the time machine?
906  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: This is why Bitcoin will win ... the speed of credit cards with the cost of cash on: January 20, 2014, 03:57:11 PM
It's not 3% for debit/credit cards though. At least not in my country.. and it probably won't be for long in any EU country either. There's a new proposal (this one: http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=COM:2013:0550:FIN:EN:PDF) that sets a roof of 0.2% of the transaction value for debit cards and 0.3% for credit cards.

Congratulations on the coin Grin
907  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin tourism - a question on: January 20, 2014, 02:44:07 PM
I just came back from Africa, where I used bitcoin to buy part of my trip. A friend did his and his gf's entire trip in bitcoin. We kept running out of cash, and the ATMs kept blocking our cards, and using money in general was a giant pain in the ass. When we switched countries, our existing cash was semi-useless and we had to use the other country's currency, or be screwed on the exchange rates.

However, everyone had phones. We kept wishing we could just use bitcoin instead. Especially since we were mostly using the cash to buy tickets to national parks and gift shops. If you could get a government to accept bitcoin for their nation attractions, it would take some of the "do I have enough cash for this trip" pressure off tourists.

I've travelled in Mozambique recently.  I was roughing it (a little).  As soon as you do so you are stuck wiht the issue of cash.  ATMs are often broken when you get to them and/or need refilling.  Or there are horrible queues.  Few places accept credit cards as the banks are terrible at supporting them.

You also have the security issue assoicated with carrying cash on you.

I was stuck on one island where the only ATM was out of order and the place I was staying in didn't accept credit cards.  They applied to get it but had been waiting for a machine for years.   Had to pay him with paypal for my accomodation and some extra cash.

Despite that I did a similar trip in the late 1990s and it was way easier now than then...

Bitcoin would have been useful.  But you have to properly think in terms of USSD rather than mobile data.  From my experience most guys have Nokia 1100s or similar feature phones (not smartphones).  For this kind of country in Africa to accept bitcoin you need ot get USSD based wallets.  And you need the address to be a mobile number, not a funny string of characters.

Think mpesa or similar.

Like Barclays Pingit, you might say...

BTC though: Unstable rates...
USD has unstable rates. Yesterday 1 $ was 1.15 mBTC, today it is 1.05 mBTC. Can't use a volatile currency like that.

(it's all a matter of perspective)

I like the sentiment of this. My first reaction was 'yeah but that's because of the movement in Bitcoin, not in the USD', but it al amounts to the same thing. THe USD could easily be valued by its worth in Bitcoin. Good point.

How did your friend manage to do the whole trip using Bitcoin?
910  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If Satoshi was not an unknown person, would Bitcoin have turned out different? on: January 20, 2014, 12:27:12 PM
"What was it like, creating the Bitcoin protocol?"

"Ha! Actually - a funny story about that. I got the idea from a pretty wicked acid trip. I'd just started living with my son again, and he was breaking all my liquor bottles against the walls for some reason. Anyway, I noticed all the little pieces coming together, through no central movement, and reforming. I was wondering what could be guiding the broken glass to reform. I kept thinking about it and thinking about it... I didn't sleep for days. Suddenly, I figured it out: public-key cryptography. God was using his private key to authorize the reformation of the bottle, but because he didn't want to actually reveal his identity, he instead used a hash. You know, he signed a message, basically. This hash gave the Earth spirits permission to reform the bottle, and then I thought... I'm fuckin' wasted, and I want to forget being wasted, but the liquor store probably won't sell to me right now because I'm fuckin' wasted. Real chicken-egg problem. I realized I needed to create a new identity which could buy liquor for me.

Actually, my full plan was to launch drones and create a kind of genome-based open ID system. Basically, I wanted to send off a drone which carried my public key linked to my genome and some authority's (something like web of trust) attestation of my name and identity. I'd sign a message to my drone, authorizing it to pick up more liquor. Well, I live in a small town and the few banks in the area all refuse service to me, so I was thinking, you know, maybe I could use some type of distributed database saying I owned money, and maybe I deposit it at some bank. I mean, I wasn't sure if they'd believe me, so I thought maybe I could just stab the clerk, but then went right back to thinking about that reformed liquor bottle my son broke and realized the answer."

Where's this quote from?

I felt wasted after reading this...!
911  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Litecoin Mining - is it profitable? on: January 20, 2014, 11:39:30 AM
Thanks for all the help. Going to start mining DOGE, purely to see how it all works. Never mined before so it's more about that for me. And if I make a profit then great  Grin

Let us know how it goes, but wouldn't it be better maybe mining another coin? I heard/think Doge is on its way down in mining profitability, popularity and price.

Yeah maybe, but I don't want to mine some 'pump-and-dump' crap. Doge has a little longevity at least. I'll look into it properly before I start  Smiley

This is hypothetical, and so easier to answer, but let's say you have exactly 1 Bitcoin. The prices keep going up, with only occasional dips. The price keeps rising and rising.

What's your price? What price would you decide, 'Forget this, I'm cashing out'.

I would only sell BTC with intent to increase my stake.

Ideally it would get to the stage where Bitcoin would be ubiquitous and valuable enough for satoshi payments. That's the dream anyway.

Yeah good point, although I'm not sure it will be called a Satoshi to the masses. I heard someone mention Micro Bitcoins the other day, that sounds like it might catch on better for smaller payments.
914  Other / Off-topic / Re: What other ways do you use to make money online? on: January 20, 2014, 08:53:36 AM
You can also try youtube. There are tons of Internet marketing forums teaching you how to make money online. Of course, like the above poster, there are a lot of people who will tell you exactly how to make tons of money, usually followed by a referral link. Then you realise how they've made their money.

The 'make money online' niche is a big market.

It's only a big market because there's a lot of fools who have ambition but lack talent or any kind of business acumen and they want a quick and easy way to earn money, so they're suckered into these kinds of 'make money online' schemes and forums. Most aren’t the genuine money making offers they claim to be and are like you said just other people trying to get referrals or sell you a scam.

Yeah exactly. The best way to make money is to either set up a business or find a reputable online way of working for money. There are no quick 'easy' ways to make money without first learning how the systems work. I would argue that CPALead has given me some very easy money, but it was a learning curve and took a lot of work to get things up and running. You can spot a fake a mile off now as there are so many. People offering you a 'push button' system.

All crap. Start a business. If you suck at sales, get someone else to do it for a commission. I know this sounds over simplified but it really can be this easy. This is how our web design and hosting business started in our local area. We hired a sales team that worked commission only. We might have been lucky to find them but either way, there are options out there.

Don't fear what you can't do. Just get someone else to do it.

I don't have the stats to back this, but it seems as though the people who would like to see this happen, me included, are not that into spending BTC at the moment. Everyone seems to be hoarding in the hope that the value will increase (like me). Maybe this is just me and my mentality, but seeing a sign at a store giving me the option to pay in BTC or fiat, knowinf the volatility of BTC, i'm choosing fiat everytime.

Paying for a coffee with 0.0005 BTC could be a LOT of money one day (here's hoping).

Feel free to rip this apart as it's just my $0.02

Hopefully people will feel the same way in years to come - "I wish I had a time machine to go back to when Bitcoin was worth less than $1000, I'd have bought loads!"

That's actually really useful, thanks for the post Smiley

I've used YouTube Downloader before as you can download multiple at once, but this way looks much quicker.

What really gets me is that, if time travel will one day be invented, it must already be here. lol.
