481  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoins are not tokens on: October 17, 2014, 12:40:30 PM
there will always be some disagreements over what to describe bitcoin as, because people have different IQ levels and understand things differently. they need analogies and comparisons to real life stuff.

some may disagree that its "digital gold" for instance

some people have analogized bitcoin as a digital cheque, because the transaction shows where the funds come from (long numbers at bottom of cheque), where it is going to (hand written destination) amount. and is then signed... which then goes into a banking network to be confirmed(cheque clearing house)

I wouldn't say bitcoin is digital gold, but I like it as a comparison. I've not heard the cheque comparison before but I like that too, though cheques usually take days to clear, so bitcoin is much faster than that.
482  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How can we build the crypto economy on: October 14, 2014, 11:10:17 AM
In my opinion it is down to the first two options: getting both merchants and more people involved. The more we get of either the bigger bitcoin and it's worth will get. These things will come with time, so just keep doing your part and spreading the word.
483  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why are there so many alternative cryptocurrencies? on: October 14, 2014, 11:06:53 AM
We all know the reason why. Just greed. Most try operate under the illusion of catering to a niche in the market, but the devs only create them to get rich quick. They dump them then move on. Probably close to 99% of these other coins are completely pointless.
484  Economy / Economics / Re: Does Bitcoin’s Price Really Matter Right Now? on: October 14, 2014, 10:56:56 AM
The answer to this depends on if you are holding large amounts of bitcoins, or if you are in it for the technology. If you are holding over 1000 coins, then the price definitely matters for you. But if you are someone who doesn't hold a large amount for long, and just use its technological advantage like low transfer fees, then it doesnt.

I disagree with this. People who hold less probably feel the weight of the low price more, especially if you actually want to spend it. People are unlikely to transact with their coins at a loss. Doesn't make sense to spend something if you're losing money. In this instance I would hold until I've at least broken even before I part/sell my coins.
485  Economy / Economics / Re: Does Bitcoin’s Price Really Matter Right Now? on: October 14, 2014, 10:51:56 AM
Of course the price matters and it matters differently to different people. If you want to trade it's bad if it loses value or if you want to spend it and it loses value before you get the chance it's bad because you've lost money, but in the grand scheme of things the price today doesn't matter that much because it's what it's value and worth will be once it reaches it's full potential imo.
486  Other / Politics & Society / Re: why do we not have a poverty coin yet? on: October 14, 2014, 10:49:06 AM
Povertycoin? Don't give this alt coin devs anymore ideas, though I'm sure something like this has already been done or attempted anyway. I think if you create a coin just to be given away then it's pretty much worthless. People want to actually own or transact with it, but giving it away will just naturally devalue it. You could also just do something like this with bitcoin if you wanted to be completely altruistic.
487  Other / Off-topic / Re: Wikipedia and bitcoin donation ?!? on: October 13, 2014, 11:14:16 AM
It's not even stated on their donation page either. If you click on the donate to wikipedia link on the left it's nowhere to be seen there either. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
488  Economy / Gambling / Re: Primedice | Most Popular Bitcoin Game |1% Edge | PVP | Jackpot | Faucet on: October 13, 2014, 11:09:55 AM
I don't think either helps. The faucet's primary purpose seems to be to attract new players and give them a way of testing the site before depositing.

If you require a deposit, or make them wait until Sunday, you probably lose them.

dooglus makes some good points. The faucet is definitly a big draw for the site as newbs love to get some free coins to play with and it can entice them into gambling, but obviously the botting is a problem that's going to have to be solved somehow, but I can offer no solution to that. Maybe there isn't one as people will always find a way to abuse something like this.
489  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-10-10] Ignore Bitcoin Price on: October 13, 2014, 11:06:18 AM
i dont ignore it, but i dont care anymore.

I care about it, but I don't let it bother me anymore. I used to check the price numerous times daily when I got into bitcoin, but now I only really check it every few days or a few times a week. I really think it'll be a while for bitcoin to reach its potential so I just concentrate on aquiring new coins and don't pay that much attention to the price currently.
490  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tor+Blockchain wallet hacked? 633 btc loss on: October 13, 2014, 10:57:30 AM
I've never really trusted tor as I don't know if I'm running it properly as I'm not a computer expert, but I did use it for a bit a while back and somehow my email address got hacked after I'd logged in via there. Not sure if it's just a coincidence but it was never hacked before or since but only after logging in through tor. Kinda spooked me away from it.
491  Other / Archival / Re: Updated Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns on: October 13, 2014, 10:51:42 AM
Signature campaign thread for Indonesia - For those of you that follow this thread closely, you may want to check out the above thread. As the title implies it is a cross post of this thread but for Indonesia. You may find out about a campaign prior to it being posted here. It does however appear to be somewhat out of date.

Lol, did they get permission to copy it from op here? I don't really see why they even need their own one as you don't need to understand English to work out the table and payments.

Is there any opening for a Junior Member?

There's spaces on that Greencoin one I believe but they don't seem to pay much.
492  Other / Off-topic / Re: Movie Recommendation Station on: October 13, 2014, 10:38:13 AM
Guardians Of Galaxy throughly enjoyable and tongue in cheek Sci Fi adventure throughly recommended.

Is it funny? I'm not a big fan of these ensemble Superhero films and it looks a bit cheesy and silly.
493  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How can i reply post in forum ???? on: October 10, 2014, 01:47:48 PM
Reply button is at the top and bottom of each thread, but if you can't see the reply button then you're very likely trying to post in a locked thread. What one are you trying to post in?
494  Other / Meta / Re: Safe Place to make a Draft. on: October 10, 2014, 01:45:10 PM
I'm not sure what you mean by draft exactly. A draft post? If you type it out when you click preview you can see how it looks and it also saves a copy in your drafts folder.
495  Other / Off-topic / Re: General Football Discussion on: October 10, 2014, 01:42:19 PM
Messi is a lazy ass player not willing to help the team with defending, this is his downside.

You expect the best forward in whole history to defend? Is this a joke? That would be a waste of energy.

Exactly, he belongs in the opposite end of the pitch, but your claim is not exactly true anyway. I haven't seen any of his recent games but he seemed to get back to do some defending when it was needed in the World Cup.
496  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Let's make BTC stronger and increase it's value by 200% by the end of the year on: October 10, 2014, 01:39:08 PM
The best way to see Bitcoin grow and for the price to stabilize is to do the exact opposite of what many believe: don’t buy it, give it away for FREE

Lol, well you're free to experiment with your theory. This wouldn't work. IF you give it away for free this could just devaule it if you give it to people who don't value it, but on the other hand if you give it to someone who does value it then they will either just hold it or spend it, which is what everyone else is doing anyway. Let's just keep spreading adoption ourselves and see where it goes.
497  Other / Off-topic / Re: need to stop gambling on: October 10, 2014, 01:36:08 PM
I was never a fan of gambling because I have seen the suffering and pain of people who lost all of their hard earned money.

This can be said of any addiction. I've only ever gambled a few times in my life but I realize how destructive it can be. When you win it's such a high, but when you lose it's an even bigger low and your first instinct is to try win the money back and this is how the problem starts. It's very hard to know when to quit, but the best option would be to not gamble at all.
498  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why I think Pantera Capital is wrong in their $4.2 million/BTC estimate on: October 10, 2014, 01:33:26 PM
I don't normally get involved with wild speculations on the price because it is exactly that - wild speculation. How can anyone take themselves seriously by predicting these sort of ridiculous prices? Yes, bitcoin could be worth a lot in the future, but it could also be worth very little too. 4.2 Million is just ridiculous, though.
499  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-10-4] Bitcointalk Staff Quietly Bans People for Speaking Out Against Them on: October 05, 2014, 12:34:28 PM

The people who moan at how this forum is run should try create one, though.

Yes, keeping a forum operating is a difficult task but with a 7-figure budget that should be possible.  However, the issue is not about that, the issues are about common-sense policies that most other forums and legitimate businesses do.  For instance, most forums do not promote Ponzi schemes/illegal investment schemes, partner with vendors who they know will not deliver, promote fake banks where the people lose their funds, and promote the resale of accounts.  Even if you can't stop these things you certainly do not promote it or watch it take place without taking reasonable action to stop it.  You simply don't see this stuff other places and it often makes Bitcoin look ridiculous.

I disagree with this. I like that people are free to do most of this stuff and it is down to the community to spot or police scammers etc. Censorship is a slippery slope. Once you decide to start removing ponzis, then people will want everything that they think may or may not be a scam removed. As I said, if people do not like how this forum is run, abandon it or create your own where you police it yourself.
