921  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: PPC Charts on: November 14, 2012, 07:06:46 PM
Sent Andy a PM as he seems to be active today. I miss the charts as well, especially as difficulty now breaks the all time high. Hope he can fix it.
922  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [PPC] Backing Up Wallet on: November 13, 2012, 05:18:10 PM
backupwallet command must be supplied with destination file.

sunny> ppcoind help backupwallet
backupwallet <destination>
Safely copies wallet.dat to destination, which can be a directory or a path with filename.

Directly copying wallet.dat is not a 100% safe backup. The copied file may not be flushed, thus restoring could fail with database error in db.log.

The .dat file does not seem to be showing up when I do something as simple as:

ppcoind backupwallet C:\walletbackup.dat

Ideas?

On windows it seems to require adding quotes around the file name:
ppcoind backupwallet "C:\walletbackup.dat"
923  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [PPC] PPCoin 0.2.2 Released on: November 13, 2012, 05:11:51 PM
Official release builds are now available at https://github.com/ppcoin/ppcoin/downloads or https://sourceforge.net/projects/ppcoin/files/0.2.2/

What's in 0.2.2 release:

  • Fix an issue of showing incorrect moneysupply statistics. (If you experience this problem a re-download of block chain is necessary to correct the problem. Please remember always backup wallet before performing such operation!)
  • Fix an issue of stake generation with large number of small coins in wallet.
  • Qt gui improvements to properly display stake transactions and show current stake amount.
  • Please note there is no official build support of qt-gui yet. Users are expected to self-build or wait for community supported gui builds.

This release is not a mandatory upgrade.

Upgrade instructions:

To upgrade from 0.2.0/0.2.1:
1) Before upgrade, you must first backup your wallet:
ppcoind backupwallet <destination_backup_wallet_name>
2) Note your balance/newmint/stake numbers and shutdown ppcoin
ppcoind stop
3) Download 0.2.2 and unpack/install.
4) Start up ppcoind normally.
5) Use getinfo to confirm your ppcoind version is now 'v0.2.2ppc-beta'.
6) Verify your balance/newmint/stake numbers are the same as before the upgrade.

Cheers!

Wait, I just remembered that I spent some of the coins, does that reset the counter?

If you have spent that particular output yes it was gone so you count the new output again.

@Sunny King, I have 1999 PPCoins from Oct 1. That is over 31 days. TX hash is 6c804e76212612db6bc8fd38e2c07c0c176301d53fe5f106fb89d2c441122753. I bought those coins from the exchange.
I did receive other transactions over time, but it was not mentioned if that mattered or not. The point is, my coins are old enough for POS, but getinfo shows as stake being 0.0000.

It's randomly generated so you may need to wait longer.
928  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [PPC] PPCoin Weekly Updates on: November 11, 2012, 06:41:41 PM
Weekly Update #12

  • Proof-of-work difficulty surpassed 20000 this week and briefly approached all time high yesterday.
  • v0.2.2 release is under final testing and build. Improvements to the qt gui code have been done and qt can now properly display stake and coinstake transactions. However official build of gui would not be supported yet in this release. Gui users can either self-build or obtain community-released gui builds. v0.2.2 is expected to be ready some time next week.
  • Regarding network hash rate, since ppcoin is designed with variable spacing target for proof-of-work blocks, you cannot directly compare network hash rate to other block chains based on proof-of-work difficulty. To estimate network hash rate you would need to first get an estimate of current proof-of-work spacing target (in seconds), by counting the number of proof-of-work blocks in the last 24 hours for example. The formula to calculate the total network hash rate is: hash rate = difficulty * 4G / spacing target.

Have fun and next week!
929  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [PPC] PPCoin Released! - First Long-Term Energy-Efficient Crypto-Currency on: November 11, 2012, 06:13:18 PM
Smoothie's observation is correct, while proof-of-stake generation approaches 10 minute target, proof-of-work difficulty would increase and proof-of-work blocks become more sparse. This is because proof-of-work generation spacing target is designed to be variable between 10 minutes and 2 hours.

If you would like to compare hashing power to bitcoin network (10-minute fixed spacing target), typically a 3x multiplier can be roughly applied. That is, if I assume proof-of-stake generation now reached 10-minute spacing target, then I estimate that proof-of-work spacing target is around 30 minutes thus in terms of hashing power in the network it's equivalent to a bitcoin difficulty of 7000 out of the 21000 difficulty.

This means you cannot directly compare the difficulty to other networks for the purpose of total network hashing power. Given the same difficulty ppcoin network would run with much less hash power than bitcoin network.

After proof-of-stake generation stabilizes, an increase in proof-of-work difficulty would again reflect a proportional increase of network hashing rate.

yeah i like this project to... good alternative approach to the blockchain and mining...  I have some timecoins if anyone want to trade them to Smiley make me an offer!!

Grin I think we should have a competition as who has the most complete collection of different coins. I am sure you are one of the contenders  Wink
931  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [PPC] PPCoin Released! - First Long-Term Energy-Efficient Crypto-Currency on: November 10, 2012, 04:18:03 AM
Sure of course I will comment in its dedicated thread when I get to think about it  Smiley

Not right now. I saw you made some good proposal in the other thread. I will be cautious about this so when I get some time I will evaluate different options.
933  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [PPC] PPCoin Released! - First Long-Term Energy-Efficient Crypto-Currency on: November 10, 2012, 02:40:58 AM
I have done some work on the qt to allow gui users to properly see stake transactions. Total stake amount is also added to the overview page.

Expect v0.2.2 release next week to include this improvement. However there will be no official build support of qt-gui for v0.2.2 and users can self-build or acquire community released builds.
934  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Liquidcoin on: November 09, 2012, 12:43:01 AM

It's the latest version from github, and it stopped downloading the block chain at 1000.
How can I cure it?

Try restarting it and see if it continues the download.
935  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Terracoin - not too low ? on: November 08, 2012, 09:59:56 PM
A retargeting interval of 30 blocks (~ 1 hour) is probably a less than wise choice as then the difficulty is subject to miner manipulation to a large degree. There are good reasons why bitcoin wants to use a long adjustment interval of 2 weeks. ppcoin has continuous adjustment but still the average is over an effective interval of one week.

But the author seems to be working on a distributed p2p exchange (which doesn't seem to be related to terracoin directly). We'll see how that would pan out.
936  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New Ixcoin fork -> I0coin on: November 08, 2012, 04:18:59 AM
Why is it the only coin that keeps dying from some attempt to use boost to do DNS lookups?:

Code:
EXCEPTION: N5boost16exception_detail10clone_implINS0_19error_info_injectorINS_6system12system_errorEEEEE
resolve: Host not found (authoritative)
i0coin in ThreadOpenConnections()

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'boost::exception_detail::clone_impl<boost::exception_detail::error_info_injector<boost::system::system_error> >'
what():  resolve: Host not found (authoritative)

It takes a LONG time to scan its chain when I start if again after such a crash (re-scanning to make sure chain is intact not damaged in the crash). So it tends to be down a long time each time this stupid crash happens.

-MarkM-

A quick look at bitcoin code seems to indicate that this could happen if -connect/-addnode and -dns options are enabled. Check configuration file to see if you have those enabled.

Hi dreamwatcher,

You have done great work and is doing great service to the ppc community. Hope you can keep up the good work!

btw how much are you paying for the VPS and what's the resource requirement for your VPS (ram, bandwidth, storage etc)?
938  Other / Meta / Re: Vote SaltySpitoon for Alt Currency Moderator! on: November 06, 2012, 03:43:20 AM
Yeah! This sure is a good place to have a Smoothie vs PPC "conversation". The picking Smoothie as a running mate, and comparing him to Sarah Palin was the joke which someone seems to have missed (Because in the 2008 U.S Presidential Election, Sarah Palin being bat shit insane, and the thought that McCane might die, and then we would have Palin as president, is widely believed to be what lost McCane the presidency).
That being said, Smoothie knows I love him, but I think hes crazy.

It's not about smoothie vs PPC. Tomatocage does not even remotely support PPC. I hope you are truly neutral as you have claimed but the fact that you seem to be eager to cozy up to a well-known troll brings some shadow of doubts.

Still I think volunteer work should be appreciated so I will give you the benefit of the doubt.
939  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ppcoin offline coinstake creation on: November 06, 2012, 03:07:15 AM
(bump)

Has there been any development in the direction of a more secure way to generate proof-of-stake blocks, i.e. remove private keys for stake from the mining computer?

Not recently. For me I probably would revisit this topic after new year. If some of you are good with bitcoin tx scripts and various advanced transactions feel free to make some proposals as to how stake key can be managed separately from spend key.
940  Other / Meta / Re: Vote SaltySpitoon for Alt Currency Moderator! on: November 06, 2012, 02:54:25 AM
Sunny you don't have to worry I'm not running along side SaltySpitoon. I'm doing this in addition to his request.

"Abusive"? Well you are entitled to your opinion.

Just because I trolled you concerning PPC doesn't mean I was being abusive lol. I guess I hit a soft spot.

Someone is sensitive  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Trolling PPC is still somewhat forgivable but certainly an indication of being unfit of a moderator role. But these remarks are certainly abusive:

Important Note: AndyRossy is GAY. Have a nice day.   Cheesy

I'm gay and I can't read. You hurt my feelings Smoothie.  Cry

 Cheesy LOL!

P.S. Cry more bitch! And learn to read! hahaha!

So if you are serious you should apologize to Andy and Tomatocage.
