941  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mandatory transaction fees?? on: June 21, 2011, 08:40:14 AM
It'll be interesting to see what happens when the reward is halved. Either people will have to pay about 400x more fees than they do today, or the security of the network will be significantly reduced because it will no longer be profitable enough for many of the miners.

Maybe my sources were biased?
Except for the sales piece made by a FreeBSD fan they probably weren't, but the way you use them is.
943  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: About Mt. Gox flaw from a security expert on: June 20, 2011, 11:37:08 AM
I'm not going to start a flamewar. Please respect my objective opinion. I will respect your personal belief.
So your cherry picking of data points is objective, but pointing out the obvious fact that you're cherry picking is subjective?

Also, I have never said anywhere that Linux is more secure than *BSD.
944  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: About Mt. Gox flaw from a security expert on: June 20, 2011, 10:34:53 AM
The table show us that if you want to be the most reliable, you need to choose unix.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correlation_does_not_imply_causation

Especially when you're picking data as selectively as you do.
945  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: About Mt. Gox flaw from a security expert on: June 20, 2011, 09:41:37 AM
Here's a list of the most reliable hosting solutions.

The first 3 spots, are linux or unix?
As an expert you should be aware that security and reliability is not the same thing. Also, if you look at the full table, the bottom two providers with a lot higher outage than everybody else run FreeBSD. If you calculate an average, FreeBSD will be much worse than the other solutions. Basically you can pretty much get any result you want from this list.
946  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Sapphire 5850 Fan Dead on: June 20, 2011, 09:20:40 AM
The fans just aren't very durable. I've had 2 fans out of 8 have the same problem now, one 5850 and one 5970. The 5850 never ran higher than in the low 30% and the 5970 was usually well below 50%, so although it will probably make it last longer it's no guarantee against failure. Both cards have stock ATI coolers.
947  Economy / Economics / Re: So, since when was Mtgox the bitcoin regulatory body? on: June 20, 2011, 08:54:08 AM
By rolling the price back to it's prior value and not letting the free market decide upon the new value after this attack, Mtgox is essentially saying that they themselves are the de facto controller of the value of bitcoin. I don't use bitcoin because I wanted some regulatory agency to say how much my money was worth, I wanted the market itself to decide that.
They're not rolling back the price, they're rolling back the trades. MtGox doesn't decide the price. If you think that is wrong you're just saying that you'll happily buy goods you know are stolen if the price is right, and it would just be proof of why your liberalist heaven would never work. How could it, when not even yourselves respect the right of property if you see the possibility to get rich?
948  Economy / Economics / Re: Marginal value of a bitcoin on: June 19, 2011, 09:47:11 AM
Slightly less than whatever someone else will pay for it.
949  Economy / Economics / Re: What happened to the weekend slump? on: June 19, 2011, 09:21:50 AM
I thought Bitcoins were supposed to go down on the weekend? It just hit 18 at this moment.
It often doesn't, but when people have decided they have found a pattern, they put a higher weight on the data that supports their view than the data that doesn't. This time I suspect so many amature speculators sold their bitcoins on Thursday/Friday to be ready for the "weekend dip" that it pushed the price down. When the weekend came there were few sellers left and lots of people with dollars, which pushes the price up.
950  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: WEBSITE OWNERS: NEW BROWSER MINER! HAVE YOUR WEBSITE GENERATE BITCOINS FOR YOU! on: June 19, 2011, 08:27:19 AM
How can anyone think this is a good idea? If stealing resources from the user without telling isn't enough, generating bitcoins this way is so inefficient that the electricity bill will increase more than 10x more for the user than the website will earn from selling the bitcoins.
951  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Don't listen to all the propagandists. Mining is fine. on: June 18, 2011, 10:03:48 PM
I'm not selling my mining rigs, and they aren't either, because we all know that mining is profitable and fun and will most likely remain profitable.
I think you buy bitcoins instead of mining, and this is why you try to convince others to mine instead of buying. That way more bitcoins are mined in a shorter amount of time, and you will have less competition when you buy bitcoins so you get them cheaper.
952  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Don't listen to all the propagandists. Mining is fine. on: June 18, 2011, 09:52:19 PM

Of course. Just look at how Namecoin mining continues to be more profitable than BTC mining after people started bragging about it on the forum.

Oh, wait...
953  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [FORTUNE] The clock is ticking on Bitcoin on: June 18, 2011, 05:52:45 AM
I agree...to quote a line from the movie "Strange Days", "...it's not whether you are paranoid...it's whether you are paranoid enough.."
Great, add more paranoia to the fanatic rants. That's exactly what Bitcoin needs to be taken seriously.
954  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [FORTUNE] The clock is ticking on Bitcoin on: June 17, 2011, 09:06:22 PM
Hey Bruce, would it kill you to lay off on the CAPs usage? Tbh you come off as kinda mentally retarded.. Especially replying to a reporter.
This. There is no way you'll be taken seriously if you give those kind of nitpicking rants as replies. Most of the "terribly misleading" statements are probably just worded that way to make sure they use terms their readers have some grasp with. They are not 100% accurate, but if you think this wasn't good enough you shouldn't bother giving interviews at all. Also, to claim that nobody uses bitcoins to buy drugs on Silk Road is just silly. I don't know anyone who uses Bitcoins to buy anything at all, does that mean it never happens?
955  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5850 Linux Overclock more than 775Mhz without modified BIOS on: June 17, 2011, 02:37:24 PM
I don't think those who can clock higher than 775 with AMDOverdriveCtrl have stock firmware. At least I haven't been been able to do it on any of my 4 5850 from 3 different brands. It can underclock more than aticonfig, though.

Agreed. How dares he ask for evidence when it fits so perfectly with what you want to believe?
957  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Its coming down on: June 16, 2011, 10:58:27 AM
Are you saying then that the change is real and not due to sherenigans because of the difficulty change. If so, what has caused that rise and fall?
There were particulary many blocks solved relative to difficulty. There is no way to know why, but my guess is a combination of luck (lots of blocks taking less time than normal to solve in a row), and temporarily added mining power. The calculation for making the graph is simple, and it's easier to handle the difficulty change right than wrong, so I doubt there is anything wrong with it. There hasn't been in the previous changes. There's often a spike just before the block change because of people trying to squeeze out some extra coins before the next increase. Don't know why most of it came just after this time. Maybe someone with access to a large pool of computers messed up and took too long to get it started.
958  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Its coming down on: June 16, 2011, 10:41:24 AM
EVERYTIME THE DIFFCULTY CHANGES THE SYSTEM GOES NUTS FOR SEVERAL HOURS
No, that's only the estimate on Bitcoincharts. The graphs on bitcoin.sipa.be aren't influenced by difficulty change.
959  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Namecoin miners, stand up and be counted! on: June 16, 2011, 10:14:34 AM
The pool seems broken again now, and I think it's ruining everything. If you use it you will get a lot of refused submits, and if you don't use it it will orphan your solo blocks because it takes so long for it to register other blocks.

Is there a way to script screen so I can start it up in a single 'screen' session?
Make a script (screenminers.sh) that contains
Code:
#!/bin/sh
screen ./startminer1.sh
screen ./startminer2.sh
and run
screen -dmS Miner ./screenminers.sh
