Wow. More users than any bank in El Salvador? That sounds insane and if it's true and all users are legit, it's big news! Are they really that unbanked or is Bitcoin just gaining so much attention over there?!

Hate to be a glass-half-full but how many of those are people outside El Salvador downloading the app to have a look?

I believe the VERY FIRST response on the punks mailing list to Satoshi's announcement was "It does not scale".  And theat person was effing smart.  Because they could see far enough down the road to realize that the architecture of bitcoin was flawed if it was to keep all of it's important attributes.  I have assumed that person was someone familiar with networks.  And saw that bitcoin was a "broadcast network".  I am not math nerd.  But I get why continuing as a broadcast network is not really possible without centralization.

Imagine if cell phones worked this way.  When you were talking:  Every cell tower on the entire network would be transmitting your conversation.  As well as every other conversation.  This cannot work.  Not yet.  Possibly not ever.

The issue is not can hard drive get big enough to store the blockchain, but can the network itself sustain the amount of traffic produced when every person on the planet is using it.

That guy back in 2009 was right.  It does not scale.  Not that way.

So how will it?

I believe we are seeing the answer to that question being decided in real time in the arena of production software.  It really is quite exciting, isn't it?

I think you're conflating a couple of issues here. Unfortunately, the Bitcoin Core that Satoshi put forth was very monolithic and would have benefited greatly from a more modular design. The wallet, for example, should have been a separate module. Likewise, though less obviously so, the networking should have been separated. While the gossip network is not a bad way to implement the networking for Bitcoin in a decentralized manner, it is by no means the only way that a node could receive transactions and blocks and many other more efficient and context specific schemes could be implemented. Exhibit 1, Blue Matt's Fibre relay network which allows miners to ensure they receive blocks in the timeliest manner and Exhibit 2, the --connect option on the core software which ensures that a node receives its data from another specific node rather than the gossip network. Additionally, it could be imagined that nodes might run in a similar way to the gnutella network with ultrapeers and leaf nodes. There are also reasons why your phone call analogy is not such a good one either. Nodes aren't shouting at each other all the time but check if transactions have already been received. There are also some schemes to cut the amount of block data that needs to be transmitted (since most nodes should already have most transactions in a block in their mempool already). I'm not sure if Core is working on that but BU has something working.

So the scaling really isn't about the networking and, correct, it isn't really about the blockchain size since disk space is cheap and there is pruning and other schemes that could ameliorate that issue for most users. It more becomes about the UTXO set. Though the urgency of that as an issue could be a matter of discussion.

About LN, very interesting posts there, especially the long one by hisslyness (many thanks to him). I also remember Bob's struggle with LN some years back.

I don't know... I've never set up a LN node or anything, so I can't have an informed opinion, but the feeling I get by reading about it, is that it looks cool, simple, fast, cheap on the outside, but is quite complicated and messy on the inside. Also, the constant need for pampering the node, in order for it to function properly, is not good. These are not good signs, and I fear that they may cause problems for its future/success. I hope I'm totally wrong on this.

The whole thing brings back memories of Mike Hearn's blog post where he declares he's abandoning the Bitcoin project, and even jbreher's transaction limit posts here in WO... Don't get me wrong, I'm totally in favor of 2nd-layer solutions for micro-transactions and believe this is the future, but I sense that something may not be quite right (yet) in the current state of affairs in this matter. Just thinking out loud...

Yes, LN has been undergoing ever-increasing rounds of complexity as it seeks to provide what Bitcoin does on-chain off-chain. There are all sorts of caveats, gotchas and pitfalls and the need to settle on-chain introduces some interesting limitations as discussed by Peter Rizun and the scope creep has been quite large also (LN was originally envisioned for micro-transactions). Unfortunately, the censorship initiated by Theymos also removed a lot of the warning voices regarding potential issues with LN from the community and a largely sanitized presentation has prevailed. Hisslyness's post of his experiences is not too unexpected really.

I'm not going to make the obvious argument here because it's not helpful in context. It would be nice if LN could succeed but it seems to be very much an example of second system syndrome.

To forget seems to be my fate BUT i didn't even know that about Cobra. Supporting forks is not bad at all, but the flamewars were and are terrible.
Short: We all make mistakes. So it's kinda OK, if we regret and don't repeat them.

I don't seem to recall things that way but different things get magnified from different perspectives, I guess. He did seem to be offering olive branches after the dust had settled but there was a general air of distrust.

Circa Resorts, Las Vegas ?

Yep, we have a winner.

Should have tested it in reverse google image search first.

It was pretty amazing to see a giant rectangle of TVs as big as movie screens. Peak technology used to fuel peak debauchery, aka what America is all about.

Ah, Vegas. Where women go to spend the money their late husbands spent their lives building.

Let’s make it common once and for all. Let’s bring bitcoin to the world or to be more exact let’s bring world to bitcoin.

I'd rather have several. Not because Bitcoin isn't best but if Bitcoin has a monopoly, it makes it a target for capture. Decentralized technologies need to be like smoke. When they try to close their fist around them, they're gone.

Ulcers usually get cut out, though.
I am quite happy i didn't read or hear about CSW for longer time (weeks, probably months...?), which like totally shifted him out of existence.
My memory handicap has some positive aspects  Grin

You see people like Bernie Madoff and you think "how could someone get away with that for so long?" then you see CSW wandering around, free as a bird and, well, you still wonder but I guess you see that Madoff wasn't a special exception.
968  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 23, 2021, 06:39:31 PM
This all regardless of the fact that the real Satoshi could prove himself with almost no effort.

Prove to whom? Anyone who still believes CSW wouldn't be convinced by signed messages or any such witchcraft, we already had that. Should Satoshi dox himself like Cobra is being forced to? Probably wouldn't work anyway since his identity wasn't really known back in the day.

Stop feeding scamming trolls by shifting the burden of proof.

I think you missed the point. CSW is using whacked methods to represent himself as Satoshi when there would be far simpler methods to do so if he actually were. This in itself is a huge red flag (of many) that he is up to fuckery.
969  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 23, 2021, 05:13:09 PM
Just looking at bitcoin.org home page and I see a dispute between CSW and COBRA over the publication of the white paper.
Does anyone have any more details regarding what is happening to bitcoin.org?
Is it going to be run by that ego maniac Wright?

CSW is using whatever buggery he can to get his name associated with Satoshi. Unfortunately, in the actual Satoshi's absence, there are a few places where this can have actual legal repercussions. He's likely also trying to take advantage of antipathy towards people on the BTC side of things that many from BCH and BSV* view as having acted unfairly. This all regardless of the fact that the real Satoshi could prove himself with almost no effort.

In other words, just the usual jibber-jabber.

*Personally I consider the whole of the BSV project as disingenuous and acknowledge that many here view BCH disfavorably.

Just passing by to say I was wrong ! the goal isn't the guide stone agenda / depopulation or nwo / owo, that's only a way to generate suffering / pain, like FIATs.

971  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: September 23, 2021, 03:38:50 AM
This has been discussed plenty of times, and while some may agree that lost bitcoin remain lost, almost no one will want 10 or 20 year untouched coins to be "found" by forking a new altcoin. It may happen, but it's not going to be bitcoin. (There was some alt called Bitcoin Unlimited by Jeff Garzik.)

BU has nothing to do with Garzik. It was originally a fork of Core with configurable parameters that would allow it to follow a chain with larger blocks. After the fork which created BCH (caused by Amaury Sachet's fork of Core), they also created a fork that would follow that chain and after a while, discontinued the BTC fork.

Garzik was responsible for the SegWit2X effort/debacle of which I will say no more as I don't feel like getting ranty.

I can guarantee you that lost btc address will eventually be subject to forfeit much like an old bank account with no action gets grabbed.

An untouched btc address in terms of no funds ever removed will be considered lost .

The funds will be folded back into mining rewards for blocks.

There are some that think that this is CSW's motive behind BSV based on various things that he has said. I don't really see it happening with BTC but it's not impossible. There's also the possibility of quantum computing meaning that private keys will no longer secure and BTC will have to be moved to a more secure scheme or be swept by those with the capability.

Bank boxes typically are less than $100 per year, depending on size. Jewelry you don't use ... but again, maybe better at home. I can find Sentry branded fire-safe waterproof chests with lifetime warranty on amazon.

Make sure to check the ratings on those. They're often not that impressive. Not that I'm recommending bank boxes either.

During the full and new phases of the moon, the sun and moon are aligned so their gravitational effects are amplified.  At certain times of the year this alignment as well as the proximity of the bodies to earth serve to pull the bitcoin trend line higher and higher towards new ATHs.

Trust the science!

Wow.  I would love to hear the other side of this one.  But I do not see any holes in the victim's story.  I hope the aggressor pays.

It's where the whole "it's just a few bad apples" falls apart.

There's always a choice. I can't imagine the misery you live in if you hate every aspect of society.

Quite a reductive statement. Though I expected no better.

Now say "roads".

Sometimes I wonder why some of you even participate in society.

Like there's a choice.

PARIS — Calling American and Australian behavior “unacceptable between allies and partners,” France announced on Friday that it was recalling its ambassadors to both countries in protest over President Biden’s decision to provide nuclear-powered submarines to Australia.

It was the first time in the history of the long alliance between France and the United States, dating back to 1778, that a French ambassador has been recalled to Paris in this way for consultations. The decision by President Emmanuel Macron reflects the extent of French outrage at what it has a called a “brutal” American decision and a “stab in the back” from Australia.

But why would France care so much? Does this adversely affect their military standing on the world stage?

Australia on Wednesday canceled a $66 billion agreement to purchase French-built, conventionally powered submarines, hours before the deal with Washington and London was announced.

Oh, money, grift, corruption and pork.

Of course.

Nice.... now don't be fire hosing random merits...ya hear?

Back when we did the CB vote, I promised to return a bunch of the merits. I kinda miscalculated and ran out but an attempt was made.
