241  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Buying coins with USD on: December 19, 2013, 09:48:18 PM
Is there are reason why there aren't more sites that allow easy purchasing of different types of coins and crypto-currencies with USD? I wasn't sure if it was because not many people have the funds or ability to create a service, or because of the potential for legal ramifications? Thank you! Sorry that I am new and could not post this question elsewhere.

Mostly it is because the only coin worth anything in real life is Bitcoin, and so people will only trade USD for Bitcoins.

I'm getting more annoyed at all the Dogecoin threads in the newbie section.
Report them

Is it a reportable offence?

I remember one of the staff posting a while ago that non-bitcoin threads should be reported.  The only place they are allowed is "Alternative Cryptocurrencies".

Looking at the rules for the newbie section, I do not see where it says you cannot post alt-coin related stuff there. Can you point out the rule?

That volume number is misleading.  A lot of trades are arranged by localbitcoins.com, but do not use their wallet, but simply go P2P.  Those don't get counted towards volume.

Are there any volume estimates available for Localbitcoins? I really suspect whether their volumes are as large as Mt Gox and BTC-E. Most of the large traders stay away from Localbitcoins. It is mostly used for low volume trades.

Do you have a source for this? What do you consider a "large trrader"? I see one guy near me who is offering to exchange $10000 cash for bitcoins or bitcoins for cash, does that count as a large trader?
244  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: December 19, 2013, 03:46:09 PM
Gold is made in stars....

Aha, so the Gold God lives in the heavens! Therefore, God is up.

Now that that is settled, we can go back to talking about how gold is down vs bitcoins today?
245  Economy / Economics / Re: Selling Detroit to the Chinese, for Bitcoin on: December 19, 2013, 03:43:54 PM
I thought it was the Chinese trying to get bitcoins? So maybe they should start selling off parts of China to get the bitcoins?

Yea bitcoinrocks it is really unfortunate to hear that Thailand has banned biticon while other countries are giving it a tough time. Your mentioned details really seem worth trying but you know many fraudsters have got active to loot innocent users so please tell me how can I trust your source?. (make answer brief in bullet form preferred)

Bitcoins are not banned in Thailand.

Depends on which god you worship. I imagine the Gold God would always be down in the earth making more gold?
248  Other / Politics & Society / Re: As a deflationary currency, is Bitcoin the right answer? on: December 19, 2013, 03:25:47 PM
So what is the solution for creating a just society where the wealth gap isn't constantly increasing? Because progressive taxation hasn't worked, and if our current society switched to BTC, it would simply move the concentration of wealth to a different (arguably even smaller than now) group of people.

The government solution to equality: Create a society where nobody has anything, and then there will be no rich and nobody will feel poor.

Having a society with no rich and no poor cannot be forced by government. It will only be done by a community where everybody chooses to live that way, where the people who produce willingly support those who do not. In a family where everybody shares the income of one man, you would not say that the father is wealthy and the son is poor, they are equal.

I also reject the notion that you can control society by the tax code. Taxes should be there to fund the legitimate functions of the government, not to tell people how to live. And, try as hard as you want, people will exploit the tax code and/or find ways to work around it. A simple tax is a better tax, because it leaves less loopholes for the rich and well-connected.

@Peter Lambert
@twoez

I agree it brings nothing new, but is there any alt that truly bring innovation? All are pretty much the same, and all are made for pure speculation.
I'm not a fanboy or hater I'm just curious why DOGE can't reach let say 100mln market cap? If there is people who will pay the ridiculous price for DOGE why stop them?

Namecoin acts as a domain name registration.

I have not researched them all, but there are some (at least one, I assume there are more) which do not reduce the mining reward over time. Ripples do not have mining at all (call it 100% premine if you want).

make sure you pronounce it the correct way to get the full effect of what this really is: "dodgy-coin".

Is this how it's pronounced? I guess it makes sense but I've been saying it as doughe lol.

As far as I know, there is no official pronunciation, I just find dodgy to be the most descriptive. "Doughe" - I don't even know how to say that, there is no English equivalent. Are you trying to say "Dough-y" like "doe-ee", or maybe to rhyme with rough or cough or slough (either of the two different ways of pronouncing it) or though or through or bough? Or are you trying to say like rouge or rogue? I guess the 'e' could be silent and you could just pronounce it like dodge, or you could pronounce it doggy, they do use a dog in the symbol?
250  Other / Meta / Re: Better way to read 3000 page threads? on: December 19, 2013, 02:56:49 PM
Maybe it would be possible to make a page that starts at the first unread post and includes all the unread posts in the thread?

Click the new button next to a post and it will take you to the new posts in the thread that you haven't read yet.

Yeah, I know that. But I still have to click on the numbers for the pages that come after that. What I want is another link next to the "new" button that is something like "all new", where it starts on that post and keeps going without any page breaks until the end of the thread.
251  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: how old is dogecoin? on: December 19, 2013, 02:40:56 PM
I do agree. It brings nothing new to the table. Nothing we've already seen with other coins. It's just a hype. I would also suggest to sell them before the price drops.

And before somebody says "wait until it peaks, then sell them all", these things can drop off rather quickly. If there is a flaw found in the software or even if somebody decides to cash out a large amount the price could drop precipitously. Or it might just start sliding as the hype wears out, and if you keep hoping it will go back up a bit you will be left holding the bag.

253  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: how old is dogecoin? on: December 19, 2013, 02:32:19 PM
Why so much people call DOGE a scamcoin? I mined like 1m of them for free on the beginning, and if I want to sell it right now I would get 1.2 BTC (~800$). So where is the scam? Did I miss something?

It is not really a scam any more than any of the other altcoins. Ask yourself, why would anybody buy some dodgy-coins instead of feathercoins or peercoins or ixcoins or heffercoins or ripples or sexcoins or cattcoins or litecoins or bitcoins? What does it bring new to the table? If there are problems that show up in the software, do you trust the developers to fix them?

You mined them for free you say, why would anybody pay you $800 dollars for them? I call bubble. You should sell them now before their price drops as people realize how easy they are to get and how massively many there are.

255  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Getting around a government ban on BTC on: December 19, 2013, 02:09:14 PM

If exchanges are banned officially how average people would continue to buy btc or better use it as a currency?

There just has to be a way for btc to enter into the economy from outside the country. There are some services which people can do over the internet, those could be paid for in bitcoins (programming, translation, sexchat), the people who earn bitcoins in such a way can then trade face to face with the other people.

A lot if people are now trying to buy however i wonder if we are back to 800 before their money hits.

I remember just a couple months ago when the silk road siezure news hit the price dropped, I tried to get some money in to buy bitcoins and by the time my money got to the exchange the price was already above where it was before the news.

Has the government ban prevented you from getting weed?

P.S. There is not the slightest indication that the U.S. is going to ban bitcoin.

And you can trade weed for bitcoins. Voila, bitcoin ban is circumvented.
259  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Getting around a government ban on BTC on: December 18, 2013, 08:35:10 PM
What would an exchange look like that is able to get around this?

Any decentralized approach taking advantage of a payment network with A2A (Account-To-Account) transfers will work.

It's easy for China to crack down on one or two large exchanges which integrate with the banking system.

It's a lot harder for them to crack down on individuals using Alipay or similar.

That's why many, many individuals today still trade bitcoins for Dwolla -- even with Dwolla saying they don't allow any Bitcoin trading.  You won't find the advertisements from those who do it, but the trades happen.  Daily.   Same for PayPal, etc.

Did I miss something? What is the point of introducing an extra step - bitcoin - into the process? Or do you mean one part of the transaction is through online payment processors and the confirmation back is in bitcoin?

If you want to send money to somebody outside the US, Dwolla will not help you (they are only for US based people), so you transfer money to dwolla, trade that for bitcoins, then send the bitcoins wherever you want to send them. The person who sold you the bitcoins can then transfer the money from Dwolla to their bank account, Dwolla does not know you traded bitcoins.

Well, the crisis in confidence should have happened when they were unable to return Germany's gold when they asked for it. Nothing happened so apparently people don't care or comprehend.

Which way should such event push the price? On the one hand we find out that the government is lying about their gold holdings, so what can we trust about gold? On the other hand, it appears the government has to buy up some huge amount of physical gold to give to the Germans, so that should raise the price, right?
