322  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mt. Gox - Oct 15...demand official update on: October 09, 2013, 04:55:31 PM
MtGox's lawsuit is with Coinlab and not Coinbase. Smiley

MtGox is really fighting a tough battle. I can't fault them for taking so long. But I agree, some more communication would be nice.

October 7 was when the seeds were planted. Smiley
October 13 is the birthday.
324  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Litecoin - a lite version of Bitcoin. Launched! on: October 07, 2013, 04:13:37 PM
It's nearly Litecoin's second birthday. Here's to another two years!

Check the second post, Litecoins "birthday" is the 13th Smiley

Yes it is. October 13th 2011.

It is unfortunate that you are sending the pin matrix to the client. Because then, a hacked client can figure out your pin. If you don't send the pin matrix to the client, then there would be no way for a compromised client to figure out your pin. I think that would be a better solution. Please consider it.

Of course we are not sending the matrix to the client. If we did, it would defeat the whole purpose of it. I meant "indices" instead of "numbers" in this sentence:
Quote
and clicks will be translated to numbers by software

Oh sorry. I see what you mean. The client just displays the 3x3 boxes for you to click on.
326  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [PREORDER] Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet on: October 02, 2013, 03:15:02 PM
Right now, you'd have to find the spots that have 1,2,3, and 4 and then figure out the index of those spots. In this case it's 9872.

If client has the proper implementation of pin matrix you won't be entering numerical indices (like 9872), but you'll click on blank squares (and clicks will be translated to numbers by software). This will be much more intuitive and so there will be no need for reverse mapping you mentioned.

I love the matrix used for entering your pin. That way even if the computer you used is compromised, they can't steal your pin because you will be typing in a different one each time. The only problem is that the matrix only has 9 spots. Nothing maps to a 0. My original pin had a 0 in it and I was stuck. I had to modify the emulator on the RPI to hack in my pin to change the pin. I suggest you do a server-side check on a new pin to make sure there's no 0 in it so that one doesn't accidentally make this mistake.

One more suggestion, allow reverse mapping of pin matrix as that is what's easiest for someone like me to remember.
For example, let's say your pin is 1234 and you are shown this matrix:

Code:
9 4 8
5 6 7
3 2 1

Right now, you'd have to find the spots that have 1,2,3, and 4 and then figure out the index of those spots. In this case it's 9872.
My suggestions is to also (or only?) accept the reverse mapping... where you lookup the spots that represents the index 1,2,3 and 4 and type the numbers in those spots, so 9485 (the first 4 numbers in the matrix)
The main reason is that a lot of people use visual memory and they will remember the location of their pin and it's much easier to figure out the encoded pin this way.

P.S. Is there a better place (forum/irc/etc) for suggestions like these?
328  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [PREORDER] Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet on: October 01, 2013, 09:59:21 PM
i guess it is not possible to put wallets of different coins on the same trezor?

You can use one seed for all cryptocurrencies. Right now we support BTC, NMC and LTC; With proper support in *coin software you can change currency in runtime and you'll see *coin history and balances. We're working with Litecoin developers to support Trezor in their client.

I just got my trezor dev unit. Will look into Litecoin support. Smiley
329  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] BFLS.RIG - BFL Hardware mining & Sales on: September 02, 2013, 01:56:16 AM
I have paid out the final payment for BFLS shares, everyone should have received .026 BTC per share.

BFLS and it's derivative are now closed permanently.  Server, I'm sorry if this upsets you, but it really is the best thing for everyone going forward and nets a tidy profit for everyone who held shares.  Each $600 units worth of shares has paid back $759.2 + whatever it's earned over it's lifetime, which is not an insignificant amount and is > 100% profit on the investment.  I think that's pretty good for a little over a year, personally.

For each share of BFLS.RIG, I paid 0.5 BTC. And over the past year, I made 0.28261 BTC per share. With this measly 0.026 BTC payout, my total returns per share is 0.30861 BTC that I paid 0.5 BTC for. In terms of BTC (since that's what I and most people paid these shares with), these shares lost 40% of its value. What a deal!

So no, it's not pretty good. I bought these shares expecting it to at least make back the cost after ASICs came out. Inaba, you really disappointed me. BFL not coming out with ASICs last year was bad enough already. You deciding not to convert your BFLS and BFLS.RIG miners to ASIC as you had promised really puts it over the edge.

330  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase Policy for Bounced Payments on: August 31, 2013, 08:19:05 AM
Coinbase's biggest problem is a lack of customer support resources. It can take up to two weeks to get a problem resolved.

As mentioned earlier, this may just be due to growing pains. Though I have noticed at the conferences and such they always appear to be very well funded, so i'm surprised they aren't better prepared.

Yeah, we are actively looking to grow our customer support team. It takes a unique individual that would want to deal with customer issues all day long. If you are passionate about bitcoin and want to work as a customer support (or know someone that does), check out our careers page and let us know: https://coinbase.com/careers
331  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Coblee - Litecoin - Wired Article on: August 30, 2013, 05:09:35 PM
Thanks guys!

Coblee is a great guy, congrats on the article. Should Litecoin become the partner to BTC as invisioned, it will be interesting to see how the difference between knowing who the creator is changes the outcome and sucess of the coin.

Satoshi (unknown) vs Coblee (known)

The difference is that the government can lock me up.
Just kidding... I hope!
332  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinbase SMS - what do you think? on: August 17, 2013, 05:27:42 AM
When I set up a pin, enter in a pin, and click 'Save Changes', it says "SMS disabled!" at the top. What gives?

Did you enter in a pin, or did you just click save? If you don't enter a pin, it shows the greyed out "123456" as a placeholder. When you click save without entering a pin, it won't enable SMS. Try again?

I've entered a pin, I know that. The digits show up, not the greyed out place holder numbers. It's says "SMS disabled!" after hitting submit. Tried on both Safari and Chrome. I'm using a MBA.

I'm guessing you are using a non-numerical pin. Please only use numbers. I will update the error message.

Glad you guys like it. This is what I worked on in the past few weeks.

We definitely want to try to create an SMS-only interface. So you can receive bitcoins via SMS and then sign up for an account with SMS.
Yes, do this! I hope it takes off in a similar fashion as the bitcointip bot in reddit.

BTW, what countries are supported now and in the near future?

Right now, only the US. Though if you send us a text to the US number, it will work. But the voice call won't. So you can check your balances and request bitcoins but can't send, buy, or sell. We are working on adding local SMS numbers and international voice calls.

336  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [OSX] BTCPrice Ticker for OSX Menu Bar on: August 01, 2013, 09:30:32 PM
Please make it show LTC as well Smiley

+1. This should be easy as you have a feed from btc-e.com already.

+1 as well. Soon the LTC feeds from Gox will go live too hopefully.

I'm back on a PC again for a while and really miss this OSX ticker, would it be possible to make one or adapt it to work with Win 7 please, failing that or until then can anyone recommend a Win 7 ticker that is guaranteed to be trustworthy, many thanks.

+1 awesome app. I would love to see a litecoin price next to the bitcoin price.

I was at Google for almost 6 years. I figured it was time to change it up. You're right, it's hard to beat a job at Google, but Coinbase is a great company and I get to work on Bitcoin (Litecoin?) full time. Smiley
339  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Linux mining distro for the Raspberry PI - MinePeon on: July 24, 2013, 04:52:38 AM
Does anyone know how many fpga/asic miners can MinePeon (or Raspberry Pi) support before CPU becomes a bottleneck?
Obviously depends on the devices and the pool protocol ...

BFL asics and stratum
