221  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Reinstalling Wallet after upgrading my Ubuntu version to 18.04 on: April 17, 2019, 02:24:00 PM
Hi,

I had a bitcoin wallet with a few coins in it which I installed in my previous Ubuntu 16.04, in 2017.
I didn't use it very much but it was working.
Recently I upgraded (reinstalled) my Ubuntu version to 18.04.02. During the installation a new partition was created, including all my personal files which includes also the bitcoin files. All the bitcoin files are there (the wallet.dat and bitcoin-qt, blocks, etc.) but I can't start the wallet anymore.
Do I need to deinstall the wallet and reinstall it? If so, am I going to lose the coins I had?
And in case I do need to reinstall, how can I do it?

Many thanks in advance...

Your bitcoin core client might point to the new partition, but your wallet.dat is still on the old one.

If the file is still there, then most probably you would need to move the wallet.dat file manually to the new partition.

Your old wallet.dat is in home/username/.bitcoin/wallets

Make sure you backup both wallet files to a USB stick beforehand just in case you mix them up

also make sure the bitcoin core (qt) is closed before you exchange the wallet.dat files

after you put it there, it will take some time to re-sync

222  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Fake walle.dat can trick bitcoin core client? on: April 17, 2019, 02:17:21 PM
The news comes from this website:http://xingfeng.org/?p=517

This site reminds people who buy wallet.dat Bitcoin core wallets from black market, forums and other channels, and forges a wallet.dat wallet, and also provides a download channel for people to read the article to verify.

After downloading the wallet and putting it into the Bitcoin core client, it can be successfully loaded and prompting that 150 bitcoins can be used, but the authors say that these are fake!

After contacting the author, he said that the wallet is fraudulent through special channels. Only professional and technical personnel can identify it. The method of identification is to look at the corresponding version of the wallet code, check the data consistency, time, field, type, structure, It looks very complicated.

Remind everyone to pay attention to this.

I have just analyzed the wallet and it looks legit. (have both synced it with bitcoin core 17.1 and used my own wallet.dat parser to see the balances)

There is 3 ins (mined in 2009) but its encrypted with a password.

Could add to the fun that its also a very old bitcoin wallet.dat format (uses uncompressed keys) and hashcat 5.1 wont even recognize the hash format from JTR.

223  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Lost blockchain.info wallet id, support ignores me (0.05 bounty for help) on: April 12, 2019, 09:50:13 PM
This is impossible to recover without any backup. I have the same issue before and I tried to contact them to recover my account without the email but no response from their support instead they just redirect me to support link where you find the step by step to recover a wallet and how to backup the wallet.

I am sure you won't recover this wallet unless if you can provide an email address because they will use this if where they can send all of your credential.

Too bad then. Lots of money lost. Shouldn't have used this service in the first place(I was using it when I only learned about bitcoin. I was using only host-based secure wallets for last few years and properly doing backups).

I think I will wait for few weeks for answer, hoping and praying.

Their support seriously suck though. Reminds me of the worst places and people to interact, such as government/educational/healthcare entities(in country where I live at least).

Did you get your funds?

I know someone who works there, but you have to know amount of BTC and public key

224  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet.dat salvage failed - mac user on: April 12, 2019, 09:40:58 PM
Hello, I am trying to restore my bitcoin core wallet using my previous wallet.dat file. I re-downloaded bitcoincore and the blockchain but when I try to swap the wallet.dat file with my own I get the "salvage failed" error.

I hear that I can dump the keys using pywallet but as a mac user I am unable to install it.

Can someone help me restore and/or send my coins?

Thanks

You can dump the wallet only if it's not encrypted, what version of bictoin core do you run, make sure it's 17.1

You need to install python from python.org, then it should work

225  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help Needed Recovering old wallet.dat file from 2011 on: March 28, 2019, 01:33:05 PM
Hi, so I installed bitcoin and did a bit of mining back in 2011, forgot about it until a friend of my started talking about bitcoin and I remembered I had tried it so he suggested I look on my old hard drive for a wallet.dat file, I did and I found one.  I am installing bitcoin core now, downloading part of the chain, I added prune 1000 because it's just too much for my machine.  I did try to open the old wallet by replacing the wallet.dat file with my old file but got a message saying it was corrupted. I am waiting until bitcoin finishes downloading to try it again but if it doesn't work - any suggestions?

Thanks!

If you are familiar with python, then you can use pywallet.py to dump your key, then you can import it into a lightwallet like electrum. No need to download the whole
blockchain and sync.

Pywallet can be downloaded from here: https://github.com/jackjack-jj/pywallet (its opensource)

Electrum can be downloaded here: https://electrum.org/#download

Anyways, pls post updates how it went.

226  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Anyone Help Me Gain Access To My Wallet.dat File on: March 28, 2019, 01:31:01 PM
If you have no any idea about your password it is highly unlikely to recover your electrum funds.
If you can remember how long your password was and what version of electrum you have it will help to recover your funds.

download btcrecover and extract your wallet script and post a bounty in service section kind a useless effort but someone could probably find your password as electrum only use one hash to encrypt the wallet and bruteforcing it probably much easier than a bitcoin core wallet.

Morarity.

Can you kindly guide me through the steps to extract my wallet script from my backup?

Did you recover the wallet?
227  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Recovering BTC from Electrum phishing hack?? PLEASE HELP on: March 26, 2019, 02:41:16 PM
Hi guys, I'm a newbie to this stuff and unfortunately fell foul to the Electrum phishing scam as I'm still getting clued up in the world of the deeper web. My question is simple yet seemingly challenging to figure out: Is there a way a can recoup my lost BTC?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

1) File a police report
2) You can track the BTC, if they go into an exchange like binance, ask them to freeze the funds
3) provide the exchange (binance) a copy of the police report and hope for the best.

If the stolen BTC are of low value (i.e. less than 10k) , then the exchange might not bother with your request as it happens all the time

228  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S screen problem on: March 25, 2019, 09:54:50 AM
@keychainX
It doesn't really make much sense to purchase a brand new Ledger device and remove parts from it and place them on the old device. If he bought a new one he can just use that new one now and forget about the malfunctioning one.

My point was a reply to his first question, as nobody seemed to answer it, yes, its possible to exchange the display. Nothing more, nothing less. (with some hints where he can do this, and where he cannot, i.e. Ledger HQ)

I am trying to sell my bitcoin wallet created 2013.
There are 25$ Stellar XLM to claim to claim if you verify your personal information with blockchain (ID,Selfie) .
There might be other things to claim but i did not have any bitcoin during time of the fork 2017.

You can send me info with price in PM

Hi. I have a ledger nano s and i have a problem with screen. I can't see all full characters when sign a message. I think i not connected it more than 200 times from the time i get. Here is a photo with

Can the screen be replaced some how? The new ledger nano x have same problem after time?

You can purchase another Ledger (same model), then its very easy to change the LCD display. We have done this several times, even exchanging buttons, LCD or other parts. Unfortunately Ledger doesnt exchange parts, they will only send you a new Ledger if its still under warranty.

If you are unsure how to do it, You can simply bring the two (your broken and the replacement Ledger) and ask a mobile repair to switch it for you.

Good Luck,

I'm open to offers. One of the goals of this topic is to assess my "market value".

234  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Address List Hardware Wallets on: February 20, 2019, 09:11:02 AM
I was wondering if someone can tell me how i can get all the addresses that TREZOR or Ledger Nano S generates can be seen in 1 list.

Let's say i want 100 addresses and send to each one ETH.

Right now, i am doing this with "next page" on MyEtherWallet but this just can't be the way to do it. I have to make a note like "page 4 address 3".

I mean what if i use 1000 addresses, i keep clicking next page for 1h?

You can simply go to https://iancoleman.io/bip39 , type in your 12 or 24 words, it will print out 20 addresses by default (with their private keys)
If you scroll down you can change the default from 20 to 100 (in the show parameter) , you can also click on CSV and output the list.

The project is open source and once you downloaded the page you can run it offline to generate the addresses.

This is the repo on Github https://github.com/iancoleman/bip39

Works both with trezor and ledger.

Good Luck!

Or if you don't feel confident to do it yourself Wink
I've use Ian's tool in the past, i am confident i can do it myself. Not everybody has the same technical knowledge than you.

It goes the same for things that you may not do yourself :
Do you service your car yourself ? no ? it is easy.
Did you install all your plumbing yourself ? it is easy you have tutorial on YouTube ?
Did you dig your swimming pool yourself ? plenty of tutorial on YouTube as well.
Do you order take-away ? cooking is easy
...

Sometime people want someone else to do the job. For peace of mind, for lack of time or else.

You nailed it. +2 merit for that.
If everyone can do everything then there would not need for an specialist.
Its not that hard, I did it for the first time couple of days ago. It literally has 3 steps.

Depends how many words you have. Do you have 10 words out of 12 or 22 out of 24, then I will just use a script to create all possible versions out of the missing two. Then another script to check them one by one.
If its missing more, its much harder and takes more time. (ian coleman only allows you to browse through the merkel tree, not check for missing words)

As per demonstrating it,  I honestly dont have time just to demonstrate, if you really have a wallet that you lost part of the mnemonic then I could help.
/KX

Lets say, I have 5 BTC in a wallet and have the .dat file and I give it to you. What assurance do I get that you wont run away with it after cracking the wallet?

I have a public profile, and a real company. So I don't want to destroy my reputation. Just look around at my site https://keychainx.io and you will understand.

On the other hand, you can create a hash from the .dat file and send just the hash to me, I would be able to run my scripts to see if I can retrieve the password but wont be able to send funds from the wallet. (i.e. bitcoin2john.py from this repo https://github.com/magnumripper/JohnTheRipper/tree/bleeding-jumbo/run )

237  Economy / Services / Re: Lost wallet password on: February 18, 2019, 08:12:56 AM
Lost bitcoin wallet.dat password - What's the requirement for this
Lost myetherewallet JSON file password - This one also
Recover your private key if you have the mnemonic phrase - This is not necessary IMO, anyone can do it in simple googling or simply using mnemonic converter by iancoleman unless the owner is too lazy to do it.

For both wallet.dat and JSON files you create a hash for the wallet, then run different methods to recover the password.

If you for example always use horse or yellow in your password, but dont know if you used a year or a date after the word, then its pretty easy to run
a mask script and check all possible variations. If you have no idea of the password, then depending on the length and the script used to encode it its different difficulties. If you have an old blockchain wallet from lets say 2013, you could easily check all characters for the mask ?a?a?a?a?a?a?a , if its a
bitcoin wallet.dat file, its pretty hard above 6 characters, then you need to use different methods.

For mnemonic phrase, you still need to know what derivation path and manually check for hundreds of addresses.

So its really up to the guy with the wallet, do it yourself or hire a service like me ( https://keychainx.io )

I always wonder is it really possible. And if it is possible then how do you do that. I have seen another topic from a guy and he also offers wallet recovery.

Yes, you either use brute force, dictionary attack, mask attack, hybrid attack or machine learning if you have a part of the password or some guesses.

I can do a couple of billion guesses a second so it pretty quickly adds up if you have a fair amount of computer power and a fair guess what the password might be.

As far as I know, hacking and other related illegal practices aren't promoted over on this forum. I'd recommend you to please confirm about this post from a mod so as to avoid a red trust on your account.

I dont promote hacking, just help people find their lost password. thats two different things.
Could you make a demonstration of it? I'll send you part of a mnemonic phrase, will you be able to tell me the rest of the mnemonic phase?
