Did you try doing the oven trick on your dead GPUs. In my experience it brought about half of them back to life... for many another 3-9 months or so.

All you need to do is disassemble the GPUs from the heatsink, cover any components with aluminum foil, leave the GPU chip exposed, put it in at some desired temp and you are all set. There are videos on Youtube on how to do this. Best to use some toaster oven that you don't use.

Wait until it cools and put it back in. You will be surprised that most of the time it works. To make it last as long as possible try and don't do too many heat cycles because that kills it again. So leave you rig mining and don't shut it off too often. The more you shut it off and let it cool and then heat up again, the less hours you will get out of it.
4122  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Is it ok to get suggestions on how to sell a used mining rig on: March 08, 2021, 05:05:13 AM
Since you are selling a mining rig with GPUs at a time like this you should just sell the GPUs seperately on Craigslist. I am assuming you got some RX 470/570 GPUs since you mentioned its 2 years old.

They are getting great prices right now because there are no good priced mid-tier GPUs available for gamers. So post it on Craiglist/ Facebook market place at a fair price and depending on your area, you can sell all 5 of those GPUs within 1 week.

You can also sell them as a pair of 2 because some gamers might want to crossfire them, this way you save yourself the hassle and don't need to meet too many different people.
4123  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Does repairing your own mining cards stress you out? on: March 07, 2021, 04:15:33 PM
It's not stressful to pull a gpu apart, all you will be removing is the heat sink, how is that stressful? I've repaired two GPUs before with a pressing iron and it worked, the gpus still working due to high temp and I use the iron to sit the chip back in place, there are some videos on youtube about it

Taking a GPU apart is not difficult but it’s a bad design where you need to separate the heat sink from PCB just to change out a fan. Fans commonly go bad and on some GPUs only way to replace the fan is you need to pull the heat sink assembly off.

Pulling heatsink assembly can cause issues. One of them is that the thermal pads usually rip. They commonly cover the memory chips and maybe some MOSFETs. So if they rip what do you do? You need to find a replacement somewhere and they are hard to locate. I had to over from like 3 different sellers until I got the correct thermal pad that would fit.

Second is that if the GPU is really old then it’s hard to separate from heatsink. So you pull and pull to get it off and usually break some solder balls in the process. Then when cold your GPU won’t work.

I remember back in the day I wanted to make my Antminer quieter. And instead of buying the mufflers I just took a large cooler, cut holes in the front and back and put it inside. My biggest worry was that the PSU would overheat because of bad air flow so I just kept the PSU outside of the cooler.

Was it silent ? No but it was much much quieter. So you could do it with an Antminer or 2 but if you got a dozen of those it just wasn’t possible.

Never had to do it for GPUs because they were always quiet.
4125  Economy / Speculation / Re: magic ball ON on: March 07, 2021, 05:40:21 AM
Alot of people think $80K will be the top because if you look at those stock to flow, MRVR Z Score, 200WMA dot color, etc they all seem to peak at the same level as the previous 3 tops in bitcoin in 2011,2013,2017.

If you take the Canadian dollar or the Aussie dollar then $80K is about $100,000 in those currencies. And I think most people will start to take profit then, if not sell everything at least people will dollar cost sell. So I don't think $100K USD will happen and even if it does, I don't think it will be sustainable. Not unless we get a deeper pullback, similar to what happened in April 2013.
4126  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Does repairing your own mining cards stress you out? on: March 07, 2021, 02:24:00 AM
I think the 2 common reasons why GPUs die is either some component like a MOSFET or Capacitor blowing up, usually you can replace that broken component and it should work again.

Another reason is either the card was dropped or you changed the thermal paste and pulled too hard to seperate the heatsink from the GPU chip and ended up damaging the solder joints. This is why sometimes the oven trick works in getting GPUs working again. Only proper way to fix this is you need to reball the GPU chip. Which is a pain and lots of work and experience. Only worth it maybe on high end GPUs >$500.

But I had that experience also when I opened up the GPU and I ripped the memory thermal pads and had them in pieces and couldn't find a proper replacement.
4127  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC/USD Bullish: $51,400 will be the First Rebounce Target in Next 2 Days on: March 06, 2021, 05:58:27 AM
Right now whether it breaks the ATH or not will depend on what is going on with the global markets. Especially the oil markets and yields. If you plot a correlation with SPX you will see that lately they are closely related to one another.

This is similar to what happened exactly 1 year ago with the coronavirus crash. The stock market started to crash and bitcoin started to follow. And right now its no different. The stimulus news is bullish however lately there is way too much bad news going around. Its also very strange why GBTC has such a big discount. Never seen it this low for such a long time.

I guess the Coinbase IPO will be huge for BTC however it depends when it goes live. I am predicting its going to be months before they go public and hopefully by then the global events won't get worse.
4128  Economy / Speculation / Re: A 70% Drop May Occur after BTC Hitting Around $68,700 on: March 05, 2021, 11:28:23 PM
I think if there is a top it might actually be somewhere in the ~$70000 area. Reason why is because most people will want to take profit at $100K. Or at least start taking partial profits. Yes $70K is not $100K however its $100K in Canadian dollars and Aussie dollars.

There will be major selling in that area. Look at all the people who bought before $20K broke or the people who bought in the $33K area. They will have significant profit at $100K. So most will start taking profit there, so I don't think $100K USD will happen. Most like $100,000 Aussie or Canadian.
4129  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Number 9! Ninth altcoin thread. Back to the moon Baby! on: March 05, 2021, 07:02:40 PM
So I had a few people scheduled to come and pickup some of my GPUs this weekend. Then all of a sudden one of them says he is not interested, then a few hours later another guy says he doesnt want the GPU anymore. Then a few minutes ago some other guy cancelled. This is very strange.

Then I look and all of twitter and reddit everybody is talking about EIP going live in July. So does this mean the GPU prices top is in?

I read the EIP 1559 and honestly how does it work exactly? I don't think it means that gas fees will always be lower. What about during spikes or Defi craze like we had a few months ago?

It seems like a perfect way to benefit ETH holders and screw over the miners.
4130  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Ways to make card last longer on: March 05, 2021, 04:48:57 PM

Look at the photo. The distance between video cards is 12-15 centimeters.

Yes because you only got 2 GPUs. However try and do this on a rig with 5 or 6 GPUs. The width of the fan will be a problem because they will need to be seperated more and more and your issue will be that you won't have enough slack in the USB cable.

I had this issue and basically built a multiple level rig where one GPU was higher than the other and I got away with keeping them close by to not overheat. The easiest solution was to buy a longer USB cable HOWEVER for some reason the longer cables didn't work. They sometimes worked but eventually got hardware errors OR they would randomly crash. I think the longer the cable the more issues you will get.
4131  Economy / Speculation / Re: Futures open interest might hint at market top... on: March 05, 2021, 04:44:41 PM
So going to provide an update. The OI is close to $15B which was the low last week. However there are a few things to look out for.

First is the GBTC premium is gone and there is a large discount. Basically -10%. So what this means is that there will be no more GBTC purchases until the premium comes back. Most likely this is because there is a Canadian Bitcoin ETF and OBTC funds which have lower rates than GBTC 2%'s. Something to keep an eye for.

Second is that the March futures are fairly low, around 0.5-0.7% and these were at 6% when I made this thread. So what is going to happen, people are going to be happy with taking the 5.5% profits and they are going to close their futures shorts and sell their spot holdings. So when the rate goes lower, people will start to sell their spot holdings. This wil be observed if we are trading sideways AND the open interest is being decreased.

So its hard to tell but if there are massive billion here and billion here of spot ETH and BTC being sold to close the hedge while there is no derivative buyers then we might be in for a red month of March.
4132  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Show me your watt power draw on: March 05, 2021, 04:27:29 PM
The real power from the wall will always be higher than what is displayed in your miner software. There are a few reasons for this.

With GPUs like the RX 470 the power consumption displayed there is only the GPU compute power and doesn’t include the memory controller power which is another 30-40 watts or so.

Another reason is the miner software has no idea how much power your motherboard, fan, SSD, cpus are consuming. These are usually 30-40 watts per system.

Another is your choice of PSU. You got a Good PSU with 90% efficiency it will use less power than a PSU with 75% efficiency.

Sorry if my question sounds dump, how will one know a PSU that has 90% efficiency? Isn't 400 watt draw a 400watt draw? Are you saying some power supplies can draw more than 400 watt draw if they are 75% efficiency? I will wait for a reply on this

Yes there is a difference. Different components inside the PSU determine how efficient it can be. The more efficient the more expensive parts it uses.

When a PSU says 400Watts, its the max power it can deliver to your computer. If the effiency is 90%, it means 10% is lost due to heat. So from the wall it might pull 440 Watts.

However the curve is most efficient when you are pulling around 50% load, so if you are maxing out the PSU, it might only be like 85% efficient and if you are only using 10% load it might also be 85% efficient. This is why there is usually a curve drawn on the box to show you this.
4133  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How are 4gb cards still able to pull 24-27mhs from mining ETH today? on: March 05, 2021, 04:23:10 PM
Is zombie mode that powerful? is there another mode out there that takes care of the DAG sitatuon?
This is only possible if you already have a motherboard that has several PCI-e x16 connectors. However, buying a dedicated motherboard is not good because the price of a motherboard with 7 PCI-e x16 connectors is over 400 euros. Also the processor must support a lot of PCI-e lines, e.g. i7 or i9 with 40 PCI-e lines (e.g. socket 2066 etc.). You know that the processor for that socket is extremely expensive. However, even then you will not achieve full speed on all graphics cards but only for two and a half speeds for the third (2 x 16 + 1 x 8 = 40 PCI lines).

Yes this is correct, even if there was a motherboard which had 6x of the x16 connectors, it would not have enough lanes which is a limiting factor of the motherboard chipset and CPU.

This is why if you got 1 GPU and plug it into the x16 slot, it uses 16 lanes. However if you got 2 GPUs, then both of them run at 8 lanes each. The first GPU downgrades into 8x. Most people don't realise that just because its a different slot doesn't mean the lanes are indepedant. The lanes are shared between the slots.

I realised this when I would fill up an entire motherboard full of GPUs and one of them wouldn't work. Upon investigation it turns out that the lanes are shared and most of the x1 are disabled if others are filled. Hence why you should always read the instruction manual which has a diagram for all the available lanes.

Hi friends,

Anyone use your Desktop computer for mining?
I use my Desktop computer with 2 470s & 2 570s for mining, and use one of them as my primary display card.
When I use Firefox browzer for browzing, the system sometimes collapses the Firefox due to system resources(e.g. RAMs)

How can I reserve some system resources for my computer daily jobs?
It made me trouble reset the mining computer in order to do normal daily jobs!

If you want to mine while using the computer at the same time you need to use the onboard video. Most motherboard have a built in DVI connector there. Plug your monitor there. If you don’t have this you can only mine on the other 3 while you are using it.

Also increase your virtual memory in windows to like 16Gb or 24GB if it’s not enough. If this doesn’t work then just disable the GPU that is the main GPU when computer is in use and just reenable it whenever you don’t use the computer. All you do is push 1 key in phoenixminer and claymore to do so.

4136  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: GPU mining today, should I go or not? on: March 04, 2021, 04:20:03 PM
Basically I had my RX 470 4GB since 2016. In 2018 I started to sell them and honestly nobody was buying them. Gamers basically only wanted an nvidia. I would make an ad on Craigslist and It would  take maybe a month or two to sell for $75. Most of the time I got nothing but messages like “I know you mined with this GPU I will give you $25 cash , today”.

Now with the last of my RX 470 they all sold for like $150 or so. And not only that but they sold in like a day or two and there were no low ballers.

So just realize this that once the dust settles and you want to sell your RX 470 it will be worth maybe $50 and will take forever to sell. So maybe right now is the time to liquidate them.
4137  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Ways to make card last longer on: March 04, 2021, 04:10:43 PM
If you are going to replace a fan with a case fan then you should remove the dead fans out of the way first. Best is if you remove the entire shroud actually. However depending where the screws are you might void warranty that way. However a cheap case fan usually even 1 can do a better cooling job than the regular fans.

Only issue with this is that you will need to spread your GPUs out more because they will be fatter. And your usb riser cables might not reach the motherboard this way. You can buy a longer cable however if the cable is too long they will usually cause stability issues.
4138  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Ethereum mining reward shrinking on: March 04, 2021, 04:02:02 PM
I’ve been mining since late 2013 and I will tell you one thing. Whenever you go to a computer store and see the GPU shelves empty it means there is going to be a top sometime within 3 months, give or take a month.

This happened in Nov 2013 and we peaked Jan 2014.
Happened in Nov 2017 and we peaked in Feb 2018.

Same situation happening right now. At first people were charging 25% over MSRP, then 50% and now I am seeing crazy 75-100% over MSRP. This is similar to people paying $1100 for a 1080 back in Feb 2018.

The best time to mine was 2016. The markets were slow and steady. Profits were almost identical to today’s profits. I think an r9 280x pulled in $1.50 daily. Difficulty slowly increased. Want a GPU to add to your farm? No problem go to any computer store and pay MSRP and usually there was a rebate. You could even buy second hand GPUs at 50% off MSRP.

You are better off mining at $1.50 a day rather than $5 a day because if the profits are way too high it’s never a good thing.

Well 24mhs is not bad however anyone know the power consumption. Because on stock they pull like 250watts, with a stilt bios I think they pulled maybe 200 watts or so. This was around 29mhs a few years back.

So with 24mhs anyone know how low you can put the voltage so it’s stable? If it pulls maybe 175 watts stable then profitability is pretty decent. I mean even at 250 watts now there are still profits to be made since profits are high right now. And in a few weeks profits can be 50% higher if the gas fees go up again.
4140  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin sell-off over? Strong ‘buy the dip’ signal flashes for the first time on: March 04, 2021, 05:55:38 AM
Like the guy above said "every dip is a buy signal" however keep in mind that we had all these signals also in Dec 2017 and $20K was the top back then. Now it could be no different.

Yes its a buy the dip signal as long as we are still in a bull market. If we are in a bear market then the signal will still say buy however obviously its a correction instead of a dip. No way too tell for sure. I think that since the funding and futures premiums are down that the low was at $43K which makes sense since $42K was major support that everyone wanted to buy and it was front-run. So I don't think this is the top but maybe there is one or two more ATH breaks before a long term correction.
