4141  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Ways to make card last longer on: March 04, 2021, 04:32:55 AM
The highest failure point on most GPUs are the fans. And there is not much you can do with them. It’s also hit and miss. Sometimes you got 1 GPU and running fan at 80% and it lasts 5 years and still alive. While others you use for 6 months and fans are dead already.

With mining I think part of the reason is the way the fans are positioned. In a regular PC they are normally horizontally while in a mining rig they are vertically. And I just think that horizontally mounted fans last longer because the fan is more balanced since gravity is not pushing it down. Just something I heard.
4142  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining rig freezes every 2-3 days on: March 04, 2021, 04:29:08 AM
Phil is correct. You can try 100 different thing and you will still get these freezes once in a while. Just be glad it’s not more common because it would be a hassle then having to reboot them all the time.

This is the only area where I prefer ASICS because those are plug and play. You just shut them off to clean the air out and that’s it. But with GPUs they freeze from time to time. I think the longest I ever got on any rig without any issues like hardware errors or dead GPUs was like 4 weeks.

So what is Newegg’s return policy exactly? In my area I am seeing tons of these overpriced 100% over MSRP GPUs which are Brand New Sealed in the box. Since mining is profitable now they are loosing tons of money keeping them in the box.

Which leads me to believe that most of these people aren’t miners just people who want to flip the card. However how long is Newegg’s return policy exactly? Like 2 weeks? So if it doesn’t sell in 2 weeks they gotta send it back to the company.

This reminds me of a time when some women was at the Apple store trying to return like 20 iPads because she couldn’t flip them on Craigslist. I think it was Like the iPad 4 where the hype already died down and nobody was overpaying for them.
4144  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: lolMiner 1.24a: AMD Miner for Ethash / BEAM / GRIN / Ae / Tube / Equihash & more on: March 03, 2021, 09:24:50 PM
Wondering if anyone here has an R9 290 (Hawaii) 4GB Videocard? Any idea if you can mine ETH with it or any other coin for that matter.

I got a few of these left and wondering whether to Craiglist it or mine something. I remember these pulled like 200 Watts hashing at 27MH/s so even with that huge power consumption right now it would still pull a nice profit. If its possible I can put it in the x16 pcie 3.0 slot and wondering if I can get that 27MH/s speed back.

If not is there anything else out there that this GPU is capable of mining anymore these days? Thanks
4145  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Staking ETH: Is it worth it? on: March 02, 2021, 04:36:20 AM
There are other coins on the market with high stake rates of 20% APR and above.

There is no trustable and stable altcoin that had a high APR of 20%. Everything close to 10% annually is more than great, don't believe in fake statistics. Maybe you can get 20% of some coins, but without calculating inflation.
When you convert profit to fiat or Bitcoin, it is always much less than 20% and often be a negative amount.

I agree. The DeFI APR stuff is just way too risky due to all the bugs that get discovered and usually lead to loss of funds. I wouldn't do any staking that way.

There was a way 2 weeks ago to get 20% APR and that was to short the Dec 2021 futures for BTC.  I think on FTX it had a 20% premium compared to spot. So if you got USD you could long spot BTC and short the futures and wait until Dec and close your hedge. 20% is pretty high, basically even higher than most credit card companies charge.
4146  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: GPU mining - Am I better off inventing time travel? on: March 02, 2021, 04:31:51 AM
Mining now is no different than 2013-2014. I can't tell you if its a good idea or not but here are a few things to consider which have changed.

For one most people now use USB risers instead of ribbon risers, Basically this gives more flexability to put your GPUs where you want them because its extension is a long 16" USB cable.

Nobody uses sgminer anymore. You need to use miners like lolminer or phoenixminer. Unlike sgminer these miners are closed source and have a fee.

Third your 2013 era gpus like the Radeon 7950 or R9 280X are obsolete for mining. So you will need new GPUs but the problem is you picked the worse time to start stocking up on GPUs since they are sold out everywhere. So the rest of your gear like motherboards, cpus, risers, psus you can re-use but you will need up to date GPUs.

Back in 2013, nobody uses Nvidia for mining. These days its completely different and Nvidia GPUs are usually more efficient than AMDs. However they usually cost more.
4147  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Number 9! Ninth altcoin thread. Back to the moon Baby! on: March 01, 2021, 04:30:10 PM
You don't need to meet at a police station or tell the guy coming over you got guns at your place. If you are paranoid just meet at any bank. There should be a bank around any corner. And banks have security cameras everywhere and some might even have a security guard there. They can't kick you out, if they do, go to the ATM and withdraw a $20 and you are essentially a customer.

I think when dealing with strangers online alot depends on what you are selling. I've sold tons of items in the past on Craiglist and the worst I think is iPhones. You sometimes meet very sketchy people that way. When it comes to mining equipment or computer products most of the people you meet are generally kids or nerds.

I agree with this.  As long as its not phones or shoes or designer clothes, most of the time there won't be problems.  I think facebook Marketplace is especially good considering you can see the person's name and profile beforehand.

Shoes and Designer clothes? Really. Never would of guessed that. I am assuming that its mostly young women who buy that stuff, didn't think it was considered risky selling those.

I think besides iPhones the worst is most likely cars. Whether you are selling or buying one. When selling, you have no idea what kind of weirdo will show up. Generally they know where you live unless you want to meet somewhere public, and even then they usually want at least a test drive. If you don't allow a test drive most likely they won't buy it. If you allow the test drive, what if they pull out some gun or knife inside the car? And if they let them test drive it alone, what if they never come back.

With buying a car, the risk is whether the ad is real or fake. Could be a fake ad saying "Bring cash and car is yours for $1000", you show up. No cars and the person knows you got $1000 cash on you. Very common scam that goes on.
4148  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: BNB reached $200 on: March 01, 2021, 04:54:10 AM
I think this coin and FTX token are going to keep rallying like this until the Coinbase IPO goes live. The estimated price for Coinbase is valued at over $100 Billion which is just crazy in my opinion. Hence why BNB and FTX tokens are rallying at the same time. Its crazy to see BNB in the #3 spot and XRP down in like #6. Usually for years XRP was #3.

I still think there is upside however BTC needs to stop going down. If BTC breaks to new ATH then I can see BNB rallying along. Same with Coinbase IPO price. If it goes live at the right time then it will be a big success. However if they release the IPO during a bitcoin bear market then no way the market cap will stay at $100B. Most likely by then most people would have moved on.
4149  Economy / Speculation / Re: I think it's time to go Short on Bitcoin on: March 01, 2021, 04:49:41 AM
Now is not the time to short or even take your long profits. The time to take your long profits was when it was at $58K but still not short. In the past you saw how crazy bitcoin rallies can get. You don't want to be caught off guard like that. Imagine shorting $20K, you would of almost lost 3x your investment since it almost hit $60K.

Right now we need to see what the future brings. If BTC fails to make a newer high and keeps making lower lows then look to short, however now is not the time. Especially since we came very close to the $42K support and rallied away from $43K. There are still large institutions getting involved at these $50K prices. So another ATH is not off the table.
4150  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: When will I break even? on: March 01, 2021, 04:33:09 AM
If you are running on free electricity like me you don't need to worry if bear market will come or not, people tend to sell their GPUS when bears comes because they can't keep up with electricity bills, ROI will take longer than expected is all but will eventually happen

Free electricity or not, to get ROI you need to have a small initial investment. Most people are forgetting but with 30MHS back in the bear market pulled in about $0.25 per day of profit. So even if you got free electricity, if you spent $500 on a GPU (lets say $400 for GPU and rest for cpu/motherboard/psu/ram) you would need to mine 2000 days. Which is around 5 years. Most likely by then ETH will be fully POS and you won't be able to mine it even at $0.25 a day.

$430 for an 1660Ti is a little overpriced because these retailed for slightly under $300 when new. And I think they were going for $150-175 on Craiglist a few months back before this ETH price explosion started. So say $430-$150= $280. So as long as the OP makes close to $300, he should be at ROI.
4151  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Finally GPU mining is dead... on: March 01, 2021, 03:25:23 AM

I bought my gpus for 400$ and they produce 31MH each, hope I'm on the safe side? 120 to 150 days is all I need to recover my most ROI, it's definitely going to be a disaster if bear season really kicks in right now

Well alot depends on what GPUs you bought and your power costs like Metroid said. If you got cheap power you can keep mining longer than someone with expensive power. However keep in one thing. Usually when it reaches the point where 50% of your profits go towards your power bill, the profits aren't great either if you got very cheap or free power.

Another issue is what GPU did you buy for $400? Is it some new Nvidia or AMD gpus or did you pay $400 for an RX 470 8GB GPU which was released almost 5 years ago. The RX 470 8GB are very inflated in price right now, people are selling them for $300-$400. However just a few months ago they were worth $125-$150. So if you overpaid for this old GPU then it might take a while to ROI. However if you bought some newer GPU at MSRP then you can always resell it to a gamer and most likely make a little profit if things start to turn bad soon.

4153  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin is dumping, what's the possible reason? on: February 28, 2021, 05:59:05 AM
The reason why March is a red month is most likely due to the tax season. Usually bitcoin has a good year except for 2014 and 2018. So people are usually doing their taxes in March for the prior year. Since you are taxed on trades and not whether you withdraw the funds or not it creates problem for new traders. People basically could of sold Bitcoin at a profit, and then bought it back cheaper and then it kept going lower and lower, so they were losing money but they still had to pay taxes for the prior year, whether they withdrew or not.

Eventually they get a total from their tax accountant and its a large amount and they got no choice but to sell their remaining crypto to pay this bill. Rather have little or no crypto left than have it drop further and you would need to basically borrow money to pay your taxes.

Didn't think there was anything left to mine. Is this the same Vertcoin that came out in 2014? I remember it used slightly more power than Scrypt and scrypt was already pulling like 300 Watts per GPU from the wall.

I remember mining Dogecoin back in 2014 with 2 of these gpus in a single case. The power from the wall was like almost 700 watts with the power meter. And this was only 2 GPUs. These days we got rigs of 5-6 GPUs pulling the same amount of power.

Crazy times.
4155  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How can I get started with website mining? on: February 28, 2021, 05:03:54 AM
Hello, I've been researching about mining with website, but I don't seem to be finding reviews about the websites that people have suggested.
I'd like to implement mining on my website using javascript. Can anyone point me directions?

You are going to really upset your visitors if you do this. Whether its intentional or not. I remember piratebay decided to get rid of ads and instead they added mining to their website. I think they were mining XMR because BTC or ETH you cannot mine with a CPU.

Anyways they got tons of negative results and they decided to abandon the idea. I think the reason why this doesn't work is because if you got an i5 cpu then you wouldn't mind hashing on one core. However most people these days are using laptops to browse the web and those are never ideal for mining. So even if mining with 1 core the CPU fan speed speeds up, laptop gets hot, people are pissed and leave the website. I would advise against this.
4156  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining using quadro professional card on: February 28, 2021, 04:56:47 AM
I've heard people getting 30MHs or so with these cards. Regarding the heat you will need to play around with the power limits. Just google Quadro 4000 RTX and there are a few people who also are mining with these cards and what settings and power limits they are using?

Are you using this GPU for work? If you are not then honestly I would just sell it on eBay. They are worth alot and you can sell it and buy some other higher end gaming GPU. But if you need it for work then I guess you might as well mine with it since its there and not in use.
4157  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Number 9! Ninth altcoin thread. Back to the moon Baby! on: February 27, 2021, 11:00:04 PM
Do you guys sell these GPUs at these high mark ups in person or online? I don’t think I would be able to sell them in person at a high mark up. Online it’s different. But when you are doing the transaction in person I couldn’t look the other person in the eye while charging him 50-100% mark up.

I would feel ashamed for taking advantage. And if I was a buyer paying a high mark up I also wouldn’t have a pleasant look on my face knowing that I am paying a huge premium to this individual who was lucky enough to find some in stock.
4158  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Number 9! Ninth altcoin thread. Back to the moon Baby! on: February 27, 2021, 05:09:06 PM
So I am liquidating most of my old computer equipment. Most of my GPUs are sold. So decided to sell my PSUs however to my surprise they aren't good sellers. Turns out there is no shortage of PSUs, you can buy them everywhere pretty much.

So decided to sell some motherboards however looking online seems they are in stock either. However I decided to try and sell them anyways. And to my surprise they are flying off the shelves. And I am not talking about high end gaming motherboards. I am talking about 10 year old AM3 and Socket 1155 motherboards.

People are buying them like crazy. And whats crazy is they are buying them with the cheap Sempron and Celeron processors. Why?

Well it turns out that motherboards aren't in low supply, but the CPUs for the newer motherboards are sold out. So why buy a motherboard that you can't use because you can't get a CPU for it.

So if you guys got any old motherboards laying around, even a decade old, throw them on Craiglist or FB marketplace and you will get top dollar for them.
4159  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Ethereum mining reward shrinking on: February 27, 2021, 07:30:24 AM
Mining reward is reducing and bitcoin is back at 47k for now, what do you think is going on? Why is reward going down?

Are you mining ETH? You do realise that your payout is related to the block reward plus the transaction fees. Earlier in the week when ETH started to crash there was 500-600 Gwei in gas fees. Now its less than 100 Gwei. So right now its about 1/6th of what it was at the peak. So your miner rewards can be like 1/3 of what it was before.

The regular block reward is always constant but the transaction miner fees are dynamic. When there is great demand for ETH and making transaction the fees go up. However if ETH trades sideways for the next few months, people will make less transactions and fees will be cheaper.

Then there is the price of ETH itself. When ETH falls your overal profit in USD falls also since the underlying price is also lower.
4160  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Finally GPU mining is dead... on: February 26, 2021, 05:21:41 PM
You know how the markets are. Most traders usually lose 99% of the time. People think it can easily go to >$100K however what is going to be the sentiment if all of a sudden MtGox coins are released? Tesla sells their $31K buy at $62K? Microstrategy starts to offload their BTC? Sentiment will shift very quickly on that news.

I think if a bear market starts there are 3 areas to watch for.

First is the ~$33K area, I think this is where most of the latest retail fomo entered. Next area is $19K this is where the second last wave of retail fomo entered. The volume profile can prove this.

So there is a good chance that either $33K will be the low or $19-20K? However what about the people who bought at $10K back in second half of 2029? I think the market will come back to those also. I think in a few months this is also were the 200WMA will be.

So this is why I agree with Metroid's targets between $10-20K. I think those will be very good areas to buy into bitcoin if you've sold and cold storage those bitcoins for years.
