Great stuff. I am used to miss good contributions because i almost only hang around in WO all the time.
Solidworks seems to be a great piece of software. As i do more simple stuff (at smaller scales) i still go the CAD ->CAM route using a more simple program for milling.

Well, i'm not in the machining industry, but i was trained to work with industry grade machinery like lathes and milling machines when i visited a tech school (comparable to College in terms of USA). In the meantime more than 30 years passed by, but i kept all the basics.

I manufactured hand made finger rings made of exotic hardwood and imo the best way to get ring blanks out of dense wood for wood turning was a CNC milling machine. It's a converted engraving machine, suitable for llimited space and equipped with powerful step motors. It would work with metals too, but the cooling using fluid would be too messy. I restricted myself to mostly automatic work, because i developed neurodermitis at the fingertips because of exposition to the fine dusts and tons of hours of wet sanding. Maybe i make 2-3 rings a year for giving away as presents. Sanding with Nitril gloves is an option, but they tend to tear and the tiniest of a wrinkle makes it hard to "feel" what is going on, and they're too sticky as well.

Yeah, i recognized that after a few storage specific posts. I personally was not aware of the possibility to inject code via harddrive firmware, he was showing competence in these topics and lectured me one time after i wrote a rather naive reply in these regards, if i remember correctly.

Indeed. It's not so easy over the air, but if an attacker gets LAN access, there are some more vulnerabilities, especially with branded firmware in WIFI routers, which gets modified by the provider before pushed to the devices, delaying important security fixes.
Sensitive nodes need to run in their own networks, protected by hardware firewalls with IDS if connected to the web. They should not even be connected to any WIFI.
In my case, neighbors are not near enough. Attackers would have to hide on my property to get in WIFI range. I probably would easily get paranoid in a city appartment/flat.

OT: I took the time to measure the dimensions of my custom "laptop holder" in the basement today. I can install any Laptop that is less than 20cm deep, so i can replace the eeePC with an old 12" windows7 netbook from my mother, as soon as i get to her this week. At least the bigger screen will be worth it, while the cheap, slow laptop must be sped up with an internal SSD. Then i can continue with the milling and don't have to rush it to look for a newer windows10/11 Netbook of about the same size. All good.

I saw this Sony Vaio 10" netbook with debian on it on a IT security conference in Maastricht in 2002 and instantly fell in love with it. The eeePC was just a continuation of my love for tiny notebooks, and it had 3G, otherwise i would have chosen the VAIO (can't remember the model name, maybe it was X10?)


Indeed. I remember reading about SSD technology in a tech magazine. The main advantage (besides speed) that i saw was replacing temperatur sensitive disk drives. High spinning drives got hot and were noisy, but in Laptops you could not bring them inside from the cold in winter without letting the HDD warm up for at least 30 minutes or you risked to kill them because of condensation problems. When i was working for a support team, i got many of them for repair because the users kept them in the car's trunk overnight, bringing them into the office next day and litterally booting them to death.
This problem was gone with SSD technology.

Struck by Karma. We did the wardriving to find entry nodes for carrying out mass-website-defacing, which is also not quite nice, but way nicer than downloading ch1ld-pr0n.
It was about competition, not about doing harm to website owners (mostly companies). There was a site on the internet, where every defaced index page was mirrored after you reported it, as well as toplists of the most successful groups, where we held first place for some time, until one of our members in Brazil got busted after hacking (the wrong) FTP servers. It then fell all apart quickly and the rest of us got real jobs.

Interesting. It was also my first SSD based netbook, while i did experiment with Linux based VDR (DVB-S) before, in which i decided to install 4GB SSD as a system drive for fast boot, 2007, AFAIR.  My eeePC was a later edition, including 3G sim slot and most components were covered by a plastic sheet inside, for dust protection. It was the perfect tool for hacking on the road and wardriving in urban areas. For now i will move to 12" mediatek netbook, some leftover from my mother, but i will have to install an SSD first, beacuse booting this thing to working state takes at least five minutes.
One thing to add: The eeePC battery held up quite well over all those years.

Had to put the Bitcoin earring-tag project on hold. 
My 17 years old trusty, eeePC901 running Windows XP, died today. It's a 9inch minibook, because i have limited space and the "laptop" (more a knee-top... LOL) did fit perfectly in the space above the milling machine (a converted engraving machine, built like a tank).
The thing is beyond repair, i have to look for replacement. What pisses me off is that you can only buy tablets (only one USB port, but i need two) or totally cheap chinese no-name netbooks with small screen sizes up to 10 inch, otherwise i could run windows 10/11 on newer, fanless hardware, which is expected to live longer in the dusty environment.
I hope i can get some appropiate replacement asap.

Let's recapitulate:
The massive sellwalls, as intimidating as they might appear, help to keep the price down, which is not the worst thing pre-Halving, because it makes Bitcoin look more attractive, price wise. On the other hand, drying up OTC markets will do us an additional favor later in the cycle.
Blackrock (and co.) is aware of and trying to delay the unavoidable supply shock. This is fine, because it will come anyway.
If only the mt.gox coins were already released, to take away future uncertainties, but i watched the wallet tracker yesterday and there was null of movement, so the recent twatter news (currently known as "X") about payouts, even double payouts must have been fake.

Watching the chart of BTC distribution chilled my concerns instantly, 10 millions of BTC in private hands, the ETF hyenas are currently running for their lives.
Now isn't that really sweet?

When reading WatChe's explanation i remembered when i was offering my brother in law 0.2 BTC for roofing (i wanted to help his poor heroin-addicted ass), i think the price was pretty low, not much after the mindrust-event, when he replied "BTC will never go over $10k again" and refused, while he happily took the equivalent amount in fiat money. Well, months later, at a very similar stage of last cycle, i still had the 0.2 BTC, sold them with another 0.4 BTC which i had invested in the early bull phase ($9k to $25k-ish it was from in to out, rougly), which were destined to help financing the house extension, because Covid drove up the material prices (only by about 2x so far, lucky me).
However, i was aware that selling this early wasn't the way to accumulate more BTC, but it was helping to raise the value of our home (in case we have to sell our home some day, to leave the EU) and increased the overall quality of life at home.
I wouldn't do anything different if i had a second chance, though.

(EDIT: I mixed up the numbers a lil bit, beacuse i remember i got out more than 0.6x$25k, when revisiting the chart i must have sold at $38-$42k/BTC in 2021)

But, yeah, JJG, it is what it is: A tradeoff (in various ways i won't cover explicitly).

In the case of WatChe, i can just congratulate him that he doesn't put the fiat from his sale into more or less useless, needless things and/or services, while keeping the BTC would have been a little better (in future hindsight, practically), but don't forget: YOLO.

@WatChe: Take care for proper cooling (airflow! for better performance) and spacing (for repair issues) around the panels. And electric security. A burning roof is not a good roof We're speaking several hundreds of Volts with a good Amperage.
