- snip -

Okay I'm gonna bite because it's holiday season so I'll give you a reply.
Bro, the sooner you break away from believing in a magic sky fairy to solve all your problems, the sooner you will become a little smarter. I'm not holding my breath though.
Most folks who break out of your stage of believing in nonsense don't do it from hearing it from other folks trying to tell them they are not thinking rationally. That just makes them double down.
No, they do it on there own volition, studying the evidence etc.
I can only plant the seed. Good luck bro. I wish you the best growing older and wiser.
Merry Xmas

i finally bit too, but i was successful in resisting the first couple of times he trolled by swinging his "Christianity club"  Roll Eyes
On the other hand, when ones doen't call out on lies, one probably accepts them, so i had to put things into perspective.
242  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 09, 2023, 08:24:37 PM
Another fun fact :

Christianity also revolitionized the Music and made the world more bearable and fun.

Happy Holidays Beautiful Christians !

Well, then i'm probably missing the fun?!
As an ex-member of the Christian Church, but as a man who is acting on Christian values, more than less, i can only say that the Christian Church is not acting very Christian, probably almost never did.
I believe Jesus Christ would turn in his grave if he knew how things turned out regarding "Christianity".

I wonder if Jesus Christ, if still alive, would be a Bitcoiner...

haha...that said...That $622 node/small miner is cool.
1tb disk seems enough for now (maybe for 4-5 years longer), but a question to those who run a node: is pruning to reduce the size OK to do once you downloaded the whole chain?
Thinking of starting running a node, at least from time to time.

i vote full non pruning node for several reasons:

the most time consuming thing is the initial blockchain download.. that could take weeks/months depending on your connection. why throw away data you may want later (for re scanning wallets etc)

you can run your own block explorer against your full node

you can run other wallets against your full node

you can rescan multiple wallet.dats you have with your full node

storage is cheap

That is the one thing that wasn't taken care of in the Bitcoin conception. Size of the blockchain.
Sure, storage is cheap (at the time), but if the BC gets to sizes that are no more manageable conveniently at the private level, and the initial blockchain download becomes so effin big that it takes months on a standard connection (let's say, for now... 50mbps or so), less and less private full nodes will be added to the  network, while the mining companies continue growing. In the end, a few big miners survive. I am thinking about slow, indirect movements towards decentralization.

I agree with you in the theoric part, but i dont know why you are thinking in that way, because as far as we see we are experiencing a revolution in speeds on connections and also in storage, 10 years ago we have only HDD for normal people and now we have such smalls and super fasters SDD, connections the same, ten or 15 years ago it was a miracle if 3G was connected at slow speed, now we have 5G and we can stream from whatever place we want.

So i think until the speed of the evolution in this things is faster than the weight of the blockchain is not even a real problem.

I agree, but look ahead under the fact that Moore's Law is broken. Even if storage/cent and speed grows in a linear way, the blockchain will grow faster. So the performace/(blockchain)byte ratio will likely go down. It's not hard to sync blocks, but as i said, the percentage of private miners will decrease.
On the mobile data issue: What i personally experienced was 3G getting slower with more people using it, now it's the same with 4G. 5G is not even available in my area yet, but i remember myself switching back to 3G mode to get faster and more reliable connections, ccompared to 4G, because of too many customers using the latter. Bad weather is still a factor for poor transfer rates, especially over longer ranges/low transceiver areal density.
In comparison, big mining farms likely have multiple fiberglass connections, one or two hops away from backbone routers, acres of servers... In the long run, big eats small, because mining is a business which is based on our economic rules.
I don't want to put Bitcoin down, but the aspect of growth (EDIT: and/or scaling) was not given enough attention, imho. A chronic problem in the IT industry i was in, balls deep.
244  Other / Off-topic / Need help with PHP and charting (display example inluded) on: December 09, 2023, 06:03:04 PM
Hi folks,

i have a good reason to sort of revive my PHP programming again.
There are not many things i didn't do with PHP yet, but i need help with charting.
It's not hard to create the data, but i ceased to find a library that easily lets me display a simple chart like this:

The line is representing non-zero values, positive and negative, but the differnce to zero should be colored (red for negative diff, green for positive).
Any hints or tips?

Thanks  Grin

EDIT:

For now, it looks like the Highcharts JS API will do.
Using the "area" type of Graph, setting css properties .highcharts-point and .highcharts-graph.highcharts-negative to the desired colors does the trick.

Once it reaches 50K, all the grandmas and taxi drivers fomo in, then one sells.
Then when it dumps back to 40K, one buys those coins back.
Not rocket science.

Aye, captain.
In my poor ass case, this would make the majority of my corn subject to tax (if i'd actually sell and buy back in 100%).
Most of my corn is tax-free, because bought before 2021, when the tax law changed. As soon as i sell it, it's untaxabe fiat money, but when i buy in again with that money, all corn i'd get hold of would be taxable when i sell it.
In the face of 25% capital gain tax, this trade wouldn't work in my favor.
Judging by the numbers, it's best for me to straight hodl, because IF i sell in the future at the (theoretically) highest price, only a fraction of the money would be subject to capital gain taxation. So i better choose wisely when to sell. That said, the projected ETF pump/dump seems not to be the best event for me to trade.
The current situation of law kind of sucks in this manner, i can only hope for subsequent occasions to up my BTC holdings through trading back and forth, and preceding changes in taxation policies that would work in a better way for trading BTC.

I can trade back&forth between Cryptocurrencies (and stablecoins) withour being taxed, but the crux here is that once i make such a trade, the amount of BTC (or Crypto) i'd sell for fiat money would make it taxable. So this option would be great, but the law considers sold/traded coins as the "oldest coins" of my holdings, making them taxable when selling for money as well.

It's a shit law, and it's clearly aimed at milking traders, but it goes a little bit to far. But there's no reason to change the taxation policy, because why would the government want to pass on the extra money?  Angry

EDIT: While thoughtfully writing this post, Bitcoin went up several hundred US-bucks. Niiiice  Grin

EDIT2: Aaand back again  Cheesy

@Chartbuddy: Let's make a deal like last time. I go to sleep and you push it over $45k? Thanks in advance!  Wink

And by the way, when i write "HODLer", i mean HODLer, not whale. Somebody trading the cycles is not a HODLer.
It's HODL (from HOLD, not SELL, nor TRADE)
Why don't you understand?
Or is your lil sad ass just trolling?  Huh  Roll Eyes

ChartBuddy's 24 hour Wall Observation recap
In my amateur Probably Obvious Opinion on Wall Observation:  Often large ask walls on the right, are not scared people wanting to sell a load of BTC.
Oh no.  They are convincing foolish others who do want to sell (or sorry if you need to sell right now) to set their asks below the wall price.  Otherwise it'll never sell, right?
Thus providing cheaper corn for all who can harvest.  But, as noted above, the wall can only last so long.

in the past we noticed, that most of these walls disappear before they get eaten. so these individuals don't really want to sell bitoin, they use these walls as a kind of tool to suppress the price for a period of time.

thanks for these gifs. looks cool how the wall suddenly appears Smiley

Yeah, that's likely an "intimidation wall" to trigger panic reactions like "oh no! Bitcoin is going to crash at insert_wall_ask_price_here !!!"

DCA is a shit strategy if you forget to buy. I missed out on the last 5%. :/

The broker of my choice is offering recurring buys starting from $50. It's KYC-ed, though.
On the other hand, only buys/sells of more than $1000 are reported to the authorities.

finally a wall worth to observe! looks massive!

You will watch with awe how it's going to be sliced like butter when we break $50k next week.

The Mar'22 bull-trap's top, i was already waiting for that wall to appear.

hey JJG is the bottom in?

I wouldn't be surprised if we get another leg up to 41k-44k before having a major correction.

You mean major in the range of 10% or more?

It's the first week of December and Bitcoin as already crosses $42k mark and that gives me more confidence in my prediction that Bitcoin will reach $50k in value before 2024. We still have so many days to see Bitcoin at $50k and there can be Christmas surprise as well. I'm quite sure that Santa might be keeping that thing as surprise for us. I'm still positive that Bitcoin will reach $50k in this month and may reach very high levels in 2024-2025.
Can become tempting for some bitcoin holders to want to sell some bitcoins and spend on the Christmas season where there is a lot of buying of wants and not needs.

and Why not?! many have made profit already.

Here's a good reason to keep holding, these times when bitcoin is performing well presents one very good scenario to distinguish the real holders from the fakes.

Real hodlers never sell  Wink

For me, there is more chance of snow in Africa then bitcoin switching to PoS (or changing its code).

OK, thanks for indirectly answering my question (FYI: There definitely has been snow in Africa already)
So we both (three, including JJG) agree that Bitcoin is no more (Bitcoin) without PoW.

3. Pfff. I see this every night man. Check this out.

Thanks a ton, AlcoHoDL, for putting my search for the perfect christmas present to an end  Cool Cool Cool

Glad I helped. I don't actually own it, but thinking about buying it. I discovered it a few days ago, in one of Sabine Hossenfelder's videos:

YouTube — The Do's and Don't's of Good Sleep, According to Science

You can get 15% off your order if you purchase it by clicking her link in the video's description.

I hope it is as good as it looks in the video...

Found this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WWvYCSq_uw

Go near the end of the video, there's a half priced alternative made by "BlissLights".
Looks like the same asian product got re-branded by more than one "manufacturer"  Wink

259  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 04, 2023, 08:04:07 AM
The acceleration of this rally is starting to get into concern territory. This has got to be fomo coming in to play with traders. It is very much looking like we may break through $41K today which I imagine will only get the snowball rolling faster. I’d be nervous to be a short term trader holding here as we knock on $41K already. Common sense says a correction has to be coming, but this rally is far from common.

1. I have to admit that i (more or less) count on trader's yield days, typically in december. However, i don't see more than a 10% setback, which is extreme already.
2. Inflation and returns from other markets increased the investment volume, this is why we go higher faster, as seen in previous bullruns.
3. Anticipation is growing with every cycle, so more "investors" are more sure every cycle that Bitcoin will perform.
4. Bitcoin is easier to get for the ordinary (and responsible) buyer (please mind NYKNYC, people!), and well, the speculation on spot ETFs became more dense, too.

All these (and also more minor ones) are able to build the ground for steeper charts, but if true, we will have to expect the according blowoff spectacle after next ATH, too.
I can feel your concerns, though, as i might be totally wrong because of expectational biasing.

Oh yeah, it is that part of the cycle again  Cool
Yesterday, i have read the first FUD article in a long time about Bitcoin, the energy and resource eating monster  Roll Eyes
This time, the framing was "one transaction is wasting a swimming pool full of water" for cooling the nodes  Huh
Again, the Vitalik coin was mentioned as demonstrating an alternative, because "changing the algorithm" (POS, for newbs) saved 99% of energy in the network.
The one argument i couldn't really follow was "the more expensive Bitcoin gets, the more energy intensive the network becomes"  Huh Huh Huh

my rating: bullish, though  Grin

the more articles
the more FOMO will kick in
A mainstream news law?
Shifting of ethereum from PoW to PoS just tells the story that how centralized this coin is with unlimited supply of coins. The decentralized concept originally proposed by Satoshi is only limited to bitcoin.

People do have nature of criticising new products. That's how this world is moving. In initial days people made fun of Wright brothers who proposed idea that human can fly. There are less number of haters for bitcoin with every passing year as more are embracing it.

It will be nice start of week if I see 40k after I wake up on Monday morning!!!

Have a nice weekend everyone.
Yeah, true that.

BUT...

what do you consider to happen if bitcoin would switch to PoS one day?
It's not impossible, there's that. Even if would become relevant through future BIPs, what would you think would change implicitly?
OG's leaving? Institutions going all-in? Big miners wrecking it all for the profits? Satoshi coming out like Superman?
This is not a rethoric question (my example answers are rethoric, though). I really asked for your opinion.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not in favor of PoS, this model is just a No-Go for the sake of Bitcoin's "soul" (an analogy), but i can see the point(s) of such a change, which are on top of "good willing" people, but the downsides have to be considered, too, which is most likely not the case with everybody who likes the PoW ideas, they just see their manifests, not much caring about the other possible effects on the system, which are by no means always positive, imho.
But there's always a bad aftertaste with "good will", inherently, i think most of us here know that "good will" (aka. "wanting only the best for something/somebody) is most always not really the best, especially in hindsight.

That is kind of a dumb example OOM.

Do you happen to know what bitcoin is?

The whole invention of bitcoin is about proof of work, and so there would be no bitcoin without proof of work.

Proof of work was the invention that makes bitcoin, so if anyone says, let's undo the invention, then bitcoin becomes a BIG SO FUCKING WHAT.  It is nothing without proof of work... that is be how bitcoin works.. proof of work... there is no changing that part of bitcoin - so it is not going to happen.

Maybe you have been reading too many ethereum threads to even believe that it is possible to take away bitcoin's proof of work and to act as if there were still such a thing to be called bitcoin?   Bring out the batman gloves and prepare your mug for a slappening.

 Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
Just read your reply on the phone and went online on the PC for a minute to answer that before drifting off to dreamland...

No, it's not dumb in a way that it is technically possible.
I know that Bitcoin is not Bitcoin without PoW, even if i didn't explicitly point that out. And that was the expected answer, but i did want to read WatChe's opinion.
Don't get me wrong  Kiss
