I suggest you post something up on Monster for Ruby developers.

Monster doesn't accept BTC and charges for job listings, as do nearly all other job websites. The developers will be paid in BTC or equity. So I think this forum is the ideal place.
2563  Economy / Marketplace / Re: 5 ssh accounts available for 6BTC/Month on: February 25, 2011, 03:39:25 AM
There has been very little interest in this. I have also found a need for this server so I am no longer offering this.

2564  Economy / Exchanges / Re: mtgox.com has blocked my account with 45 000 USD in it! on: February 25, 2011, 03:35:15 AM
I think everyone needs to relax, this speculation is going a little crazy.

This is being investigated

No action has been done except to freeze funds until investigation is finished.

There is no outcome as of yet.

So stop complaining about hypotheical outcome you might not like.
2565  Economy / Marketplace / Ruby developers, paid work with a bitcoin comany![REOPENED] on: February 25, 2011, 03:19:53 AM
See here for more about the company http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3844.0

We need 2-3 ruby developers to get in on this project(ruby, not rails, but rails experience is OK). This will be BTC paid work! Or if you prefer you can get equity. This will be continuous work as long as this thing is going (which will be for some time)

It will be a server/client console application that will have to work on windows and any unix platform (not too hard)

I'm the lead developer/project manager. We've got a project server which you'll get a shell account on.

More experience is better, but if your fresh that's OK too, this is your chance to get some experience and make a place for yourself in bitcoin History(with a capital H). Whats important is that you work hard and are willing to learn.

If you think you have something you can contribute please say.

Those interested PM me ASAP

2566  Economy / Marketplace / Investors for bitcoin stock market and credit rating agrency, dev started! on: February 25, 2011, 03:01:32 AM
Good morning everyone.

This is a follow on from this thread, I think it deserves it's own topic.
Credit rating agency
http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3370.msg54804#msg54804
http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3370.0

First I would like to thank you all for your interest in this project, I think it's a great idea, and so do many of you, great enough for us all to put our money into it.

However we have encountered a problem, that the person who put themselves up as the developer (daveout) is not being responsive at all, and it is safe to assume that he will not be building this for us at any price. This is a disappointment, for me and I am sure for some of you. After having looked at some of Dave's code it is clear that he would be quite capable in doing this, and was therefor our number one choice(not to mention his reputation as the builder of bitcoin-central).

This chain of events has forced us to change plan, I have talked to my management team and they are behind me on this.

We will still build the credit rating agency application, but it will take longer than I had originally expected. I am now putting the development time at around 4 months.

This is quite a long time in the bitcoin world, and a lot can happen in such a time.

So I am very pleased to announce that we are launching the development of the Bticoin Stock Market immediately, with the goal of opening for business in 2 months, and testing(that is you can play around with it) for everyone in 1 month!

I have been working for a time on this tool, and we will be using my code and efforts as a starting point. This, and due to the nature of the application is why development will be so quick. The stock market platform (from here on called "the market") steals a number of ideas from OpenTransactions. We will be developing both projects side by side, and where possible share code to reduce the workload, cost and development time.

Features
  • Dividend payments, allows issuer of shares to make dividend payments to share owners
  • Share voting, allows motions to be put forward(by owners and issuers), and voted on by share owners
  • Based on Ricardian contracts allowing for very flexible shares and terms
  • Public/Private key based order and verification system, this is a no password system
  • Easy to use console client for windows, or any unix platform
  • Tripple Entry Accounting and digitally signed receipts for each and every transaction for a cryptographically verifiable audit trail
  • Digitally signed everything, making it impossible for orders, receipts, withdrawals to be faked by either a single client or the server itself
  • Open Source client and publicly available trading API allowing users/traders/developers to build their own tools or customize what is already available
  • Availability over i2p and Tor!
And more.

It has become clear that the bitcoin economy is in need of a stock market, not so that users can play around at buying and selling shares (which they can) but to allow investors to pool their resources and build something that a single person cannot. It is to allow the market to allocate limited resources and capital in as efficient manner as possible.

We have already seen the development of a bitcoin based company(ours being the second one), with the launching of the market, it will significantly ease in the creating of new bitcoin companies(causing an explosion of them), allowing great ideas to get funding, and successful ones to reward their investors. This will launch the bitcoin economies growth into overdrive.

And the first company to trade shares on this system will be ours!

Our management team is as follows:

CEO:nefario (ME HAHA)
Treasurer:theymos
First Secretary:ColdHardMetal
Second Secretary:BitCoinPurse

We will have two primary costs, hosting and development, with the larger(and most unpredictable cost) being development.

More details on costs, company bylaws etc. as events change.
We will be having a QA session on IRC in the near future so look out for this.
Want to invest? get in contact with ColdHardMetal ASAP, tell him how much.

For those who have already invested(that is sent payment)pm me to let me know how you want to proceed, if you want your investment back that's no problem.

Notice, this project and it's development has already begun, call for Ruby devs!

EDIT
Just to make clear, these 2 projects both belong to the one company(I am giving my stock market app to the company in return for equity), when you invest it is invested in the company. Shareholders own the company.

2568  Other / Off-topic / Re: Micro startup/investment class project/experiment in China on: February 25, 2011, 02:07:29 AM
Project update:

All 3 classes have been told what they must do. There is a total of 19 "companies" spread across those 3 classes with over 250 students.

I have also made a change to the rules, that they can not only trade with other companies in their class, but with any company or person in the other classes also.

This should create something of a campus wide micro market.

With all the anonymity stuff, how can you ban someone?

Working on that.

What is it with you and bash scripts?  Roll Eyes
Can you do nothing else?

Well actually, no, I can't.  I'm not good at anything else indeed.

I'm not a very good programmer and bash is the only language in which I manage to do usefull stuffs.

Well then I join you, except I use Ruby, and pretty much nothing else, I'm also very slow.

I think the scripts are rather useful. They are far more portable than having to mess with wxwidgets or whatever the hell else just to get what should be a simple console application to work. They are also easy to understand.

I would love to see many perl, python, and shell implementations of bitcoin.

I'm sure they can be useful, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that everything Grondilu does is in bash, or at least everything he has proposed is in bash. I am sure that he's a bash wizard at this point though.

Yes this is true, but it would force scammers to do more work. There is no perfect system, but we cacn always make it continually more difficult.

I've been chasing daveout for a quote since Sun/Mon(I can't remember which) and haven't gotten anything from him.

Dave, can you give us a quote, otherwise were going to move on.

You have 24hours before you suffer my wrath. And by that I mean get somone else.
2577  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Common Law System on: February 24, 2011, 04:46:53 AM
People are still thinking of laws in term of nation-states and violent enforcement.

Exactly, and that's just not possible here. We enfource our "laws" by boycotting a person. If someone can't do business with bitcoins, they have effectively been thrown out of the bitcoin community.
2578  Economy / Exchanges / Re: mtgox.com has blocked my account with 45 000 USD in it! on: February 24, 2011, 04:45:40 AM
Because the exchanges are really the only real exit from bitcoins (and lets be honest here, scammers are after cash not bitcoins) unless you consider OTC, but I don't think anyone in #bitcoin-otc would touch dirty bitcoins, especially with someone who has no or little reputation, which a scammer would.

I previously wouldn't have had any problem trading on #bitcoin-otc with a stranger for a large number of bitcoins if I was the receiver of the coins as I was under the impression that receiver of bitcoins was safe. I'm more hesitant to do it now that I know there can be issues selling these coins if I don't know the origin which is why I raised the question.

Well, before you accept the payment you can check whether the coins are tainted. At the moment this must be done manually but I think a service will popup that covers this soon enough. It's the same in real life accepting stolen goods.

But it really is only a danger to you if you have no reputation. If you're a new user, and you're trying to sell tainted bitcoins, well there is a good chance that you are the scammer who stole them in the first place.
2579  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin Weekly Reorganizing on: February 24, 2011, 04:41:37 AM
Well, do you think I'm eligible for hire? I think I'll take the job if you don't have any objections. Smiley

Submit an article by Sunday 0:00 UTC and we see what we can do.

You should probably stay with the current CMS and system setup until you have the alternative ready, then we can move everything over to it.
2580  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Common Law System on: February 24, 2011, 04:37:54 AM
But isn't the point of a law system to enforce the rules upon those who don't want to follow them? To prevent behaviors that the majority (or at least those in power) deem unacceptable? To have an opt-in law system is, frankly, silly as the only people that will pay attention to it are the ones who will follow it. Without the ability to extend the reach of the law system to those who don't want to be a part of it, the law system just creates busywork, friction, and annoyances.

This is not going to happen thankfully.  There will be no Bitcoin law.

Who would pay to run and enforce it?  Then we would have Bitcoin tax.

At most we could have an opt-in (and I would not need to for my purposes) credit reporting system, but even that is blown easily with people just making new addresses.

We already have an informal form of bitcoin law enforcment at the moment. There were vigilanties in that russian scam backup program case, they wen't after him and got most of the BTC back.

There is the case currently being dealt with by MTGOX, the accused has had their funds frozen.

Tools, protocols, and frameworks are being developed and worked on now to help solve these problems and keep scammers out.

We don't exactly need (or have) police, but if a scammer finds that no one will do any business with them and they can't use any bitcoin related services well that is enforcement enough for me, and for most people I think too.
