A central bank counterfeits money, which is a form of theft since it's making the dollars in our pockets worth less which hurts the poorest worst of all. Poor people have debt, the real value of which is reduced by inflation. That is true to a point, however interest on that dept is almost always higher than inflation so...

Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Float value from bitcoind, how should I represent it?
|
on: April 12, 2011, 05:17:53 AM
|
I've read https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Proper_Money_Handling_(JSON-RPC) but am still unsure as to what to do. I'm using the JSON library in ruby to parse the json result from bitcoind And for things like balance it will return a float. I am wondering how best to proceed with the representation of bitcoin balances or numbers in general in my application. Should I leave it as a float(from what I've read it's not recommended)? Convert it to BigDecimal Convert it to an integer (this would mean multiplying it by 100,000,000 right)? What experience has anyone else had with this, which did they choose and why? Whats the simplest option?

We're talking about some powerful groups that would be losing a lot of money.
More like they just don't wanna invest in the idea. If I were Goldman Sach, I would invest in bitcoin for a chance of several thousand percent in return. "Invest" is the kind of word that the flow capitalism uses. We, as hackers, know, that it's possible to create complex software even without any outside investment at all. Now, what Bitcoin needs to show the world, is that there are alternatives in hoarding capital and creating megaprojects with huge investments. Centralized investments lead to centralized projects which lead to centralized management (and often incompetent, as in the case of Fukushima). just my 2 bitcoin-cents You still invest, its just your own time and labor.

Ok thank you all. I am ready for a speed 20-100BTC design if someone needs it. After all we are not in California here Of course I work with vectors, using Inkscape only. No Adobe no Bullshit. 40 bitcoin logo, for the GLobalBitcoinStockExchange (GLBSE) Looking for something simple, that would look good on white. No actual globes though, thats too cliche. Something with the bitcoin symbol/coin is ok and preferably also using something symbolic of cryptography? symbolic of cypherspace or something? You could use a padlock and keys. Post the pic and an address, once I make the payment you can email the inkscape project to me, my email is in my profile.

Thanks S, that will be a great help.
Actually it probably wont need full time effort.
With regards the forum, you'd be doing a few posts brainstorming ideas on what can be done using the exchange, and services built up around the exchange. Talk about ideas that can use the exchange to get capital.
From these posts, if people are interested you should be able to find out who would be most likely to use the stock exchange.
Finding the bloggers/podcasters(including those on thr forums) who have already been talking about bitcoin and getting them informed and excited about the ideas potential.

With regards paying investors, if you list on the upcoming stock exchange you can pay dividends to all shareholders, then there can be a lot of small investors, even as little as one share, whatever value that may hold. This has no overhead, all you really need to worry about is drawing up detailed share certificate/contract, then you can sell that a thousand or more times.
If you plan to give shareholders voting rights the system supports that too, one share equals one vote, allowing you to put resolutions to your members and get the opinion based on share ownership.

We'll be launching a bitcoin stock exchange in less than 2 weeks and need someone to manage/help with a media campaign.
It will involve a lot of contacting people, many in the bitcoin community, and some outside.
Essentially I want everyone on the forums talking about the exchange and the different things they can use it for, and the services they can build up around it.
I want it covered by bloggers, podcasters, slashdot, reddit, hacker news, and anyone else worthwhile you can think of.
It also means finding the actual people who'll use the exchange. And more.
PM me if you're interested, with regards pay, it'll be pay as you go(btc) as I'm unsure how long this media campaign will continue for.
This would be ideal for someone who's got a little time on their hands and is active on the forum.

I'd probably be going for Ubuntu, the latest LTS version, whichever that is.
With regards VPS processing, it wont be continuos, but in requests. A request comes in, some signatures need to be made or verified, a reply is made, done. That work well enough on the vps? Also, can I have 2 cores?
That would work fine with the VPS, I believe. I can't give you a specific number of cores but I could give you core affinity, disallowing others from using those cores. But in the end I believe the best thing would be to just allow you to fully take advantage of the 4 core system (minus the VM penalty) when needed. This all boils down to not allowing other VPSs on the same machine to hog the system, which should be a simple case of giving your kvm process a better niceness value. The multi core performance of KVM is not completely linear, though, and the only way to go about this is by doing real tests. If I provide you with a VPS instance are you equipped to run performance tests? Nope, not for a while. At this point in time we would be working on basic functionality. Performance issues due to traffic would be a great problem for us to have. I'm just trying to find out what my options would be if we did have to scale up. To give you an idea of what you'd be up against competition wise, the alternative kalyhost has is their power option vps (although we may possibly go for the medium option) https://www.kalyhost.com/vps.html

We will be launching a bitcoin stock exchange in less than 2 weeks, you can use this to get your capital if you can wait. It will seriously cut down on administration with investors and remove the need for a minimum investment.
