141  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Importing a wallet.dat File From a Mac to a Windows Computer on: January 16, 2014, 12:33:52 AM
Yes, just make bitcoin-qt is closed and replace wallet.dat in C:\Users\"your username here"\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin\.  Make sure you save the wallet which is already there.  If you want to switch back you can just swap the files again.

P.S.  You need to show hidden folders in order to get to the Bitcoin folder.  Just search "folder options" in the start menu and check the box labeled "show hidden folders".
142  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Upgrade to latest version on: January 11, 2014, 04:20:59 PM
Add the Bitcoin Ubuntu PPA repository in your Ubuntu
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bitcoin/bitcoin
Update package lists
Code:
sudo apt-get update
Install bitcoin-qt
Code:
sudo apt-get install bitcoin-qt

Just copy and past the code into terminal and you should have the latest version of bitcoin-qt.

If you prefer not to use a PPA you can download the latest linux client from here:http://bitcoin.org/en/download.  Just decompress the .tgz file and you've got the latest version of bitcoin-qt.

This same idea has been proposed, discussed and shot down many times.  Please learn to use the search function.

Even though I'm quite new myself, I can't begrudge someone who didn't find what they were looking for on this site with the site's search function. The search function limits you to one search before you hit significant time limits. While I understand the need for time restictions to prevent spammers, I think the sitr could be more generous with how often you can search.  I often conduct web searches using a variety of terms because the first term didn't produce useful results.
Just use a real search engine instead of the built in one.  To try it just type your keywords into the search bar and add "site:https://bitcointalk.org/" without the quotations.

Yes
146  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Transaction stuck in unconfirm status for over 20 hours on: January 09, 2014, 12:30:42 AM
No problem, I've gotten scared a few times before as well.  If you want to understand why it took so long, here's a good resource on how transactions work:https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Transaction_fees.  Basically all your inputs in this transaction were "young" so they had a low priority.  As you waited and the inputs got older your transaction gained priority and was eventually included in the blockchain.

If your simply trying to update your bitcoin-qt client without re-downloading the blockchain you can just copy the blocks and chainstate folders over to the bitcoin directory.

I send a virus to your computer which slowly begins to hypnotizes you while your reading this PM with subtle flickers in the background.  You will slowly lose random memories and eventual forget everything.  You will be unable to use your long term memory except you won't forget the 0.01btc you own me.

You will suffer until you pay the fine.

YOU'VE BEEN WARNED
P.S. he paid the fine Cheesy and became the first person to ever tip me on the forum.
150  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: What storage methods are resistant to hacking? on: January 08, 2014, 09:14:30 PM
Q1: What methods of storing bitcoins are resistant to any computer being hacked?
1. buy/build an air-gaped computer
2. install bitcoin-qt, Armory and 7zip from a flash-drive
3. generate a btc address (in Armory)
4. send coins to the address
5. encrypt wallet with 7zip and a >20 char random password
6. shred the unencrypted wallet

When you want to spend your bitcoins you can use Armory's offline transaction feature.
151  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How do you encrypt/backup your wallet on: January 08, 2014, 08:56:37 PM
+1 for 7zip

1. Select profile
2. Select "Forum Profile Information" (under "Modify Profile")
3. Alter signature
4. Profit!!

Note: Note sure what the cut-off is but certain forum ranks have restrictions on the sig, this could be your problem.
154  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Steal coins from unencrypted wallet after encryption on: January 08, 2014, 08:40:55 PM
It is true that it prunes the "keypool", but this is simply a bunch of pre-generated keys which bitcoin-qt uses whenever it needs a new key. There's a lot more to this question than meets the eye but the simple answer is:

All coins in the addressess created before the encryption will be accessible to the thief.  This includes coins sent to these addresses before and after the encryption.

157  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: CGMiner advice needed - Experts are Welcome ! :) on: December 23, 2013, 06:57:44 PM
My experience with multi-core graphics cards is one always mines slightly slower that the other and they are hardly ever the same temperature. Tongue  It seems to be just a feature of the way the card is made.  I always upped the core clock on the second GPU to get a few more MH/s out of it and even out the temperatures. Wink

Cool
160  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: wallet back up advice on: December 23, 2013, 04:02:54 PM
In bitcoin-qt when you send a transaction the "change" is sent to an address in the keypool, so michagogo is correct in that you would need to backup your wallet after 100 (sent) transactions.  For proof look here: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Securing_your_wallet.  It's under "Securing the Bitcoin-QT or bitcoind wallet", paragraph four, sentence three.
