401  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Disappearing Bitcoins on: November 28, 2011, 02:36:35 PM
have you made more than 100 sends since last backup?
No.

I copied the encrypted wallet.  Put the original back in the safe.  Unencrypted the copy.  Put the wallet copy in an empty client.  Sent some coins.  Deleted the copy.

try running with -rescan parameter one time using your main (original) wallet, the transactions are saved in the wallet file so if the original didn't see one of them but has the priv key from reserve then it should appear and balance updated correctly
The original wallet is gone, and I tried rescanning the unencrypted wallet multiple times.

I'm missing something here.  Doesn't the wallet key pool prevent this from happening unless you have over 100 transactions since you last backup??
Yes, if the pool isn't empty. But if you've never sent any bitcoins, the pool will be empty. (The client creates 100 *extra* keys when it creates a key for a transaction.) Because these rules are complicated to understand and easy to get wrong, I make my advice clear and simple -- unless you understand the rules exactly, always backup your wallet after sending.
I've sent coins before.

I copied the encrypted wallet.  Put the original back in the safe.  Unencrypted the copy.  Put the wallet copy in an empty client.  Sent some coins.  Deleted the copy.

Are you able to find the transaction for the coins you sent in block explorer? (I don't need to see it, but if you can find it we can check to see if you have the keys for the account used to collect the change from that transaction).

Also, as others asked— how many times did you send+ hit getnewaddress since you made the encrypted copy?  A few or potentially as many as 100?

I found it. How do I check if I have the keys?

I copied the encrypted wallet.  Put the encrypted wallet back in the safe.  Unencrypted the copy.  Put the wallet copy in an empty client.  Sent some coins.  Wrote down how many coins were in my wallet. Deleted the copy.  A couple weeks later I got the encrypted wallet back out.  Copied the encrypted wallet again.  Put the encrypted wallet back in the safe.  Unencrypted the second copy.  Put the second wallet copy in an empty client with the rescan function.  Updated the block chain and noticed some coins were missing.

Edit: Realized I left some information out and that it could be misread.

Could you please give me your definition of a deterministic wallet?

Feel free to ask questions or give opinions, I need all the help I can get.
405  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Disappearing Bitcoins[Solved by updating the client] on: November 26, 2011, 11:02:52 PM
Today I unencrypted a wallet to send some BTC but when I booted up the client some of my BTC coins were missing. Huh

Here is the background/technical information:

I had previously used the wallet and not bothered to make a new encrypted backup because I figured I could just use the rescan function.
I only used it two or three times without making a new encrypted backup, so I doubt the key pool ran out.
The version is 0.3.15.4 beta
I did the math on the transactions and it doesn't add up.
The client is on a Windows7 computer.
I didn't create any new addresses.

I have no idea what went wrong and I hope there is a simple answer to this.

P.S. Before you ask I have all the blocks. Wink

I claim that current BTC price proves that 99.9999% (1-10^-6) of humanity cannot be awake. The lock-downs on free trade are causing damages beyond imagination, hitting everywhere around the world, on a scope a sane mind cannot grasp without turning into a cynic. Any glimmer of hope, like Bitcoin, should have people jumping and screaming. But the 10^6th fraction of the world, 7000 people, throwing in 2k USD on average, would close in on current Bitcoin market cap. There's no way Bitcoin is liquid enough to let even 1000 such people jump in invisibly.

So, this rough estimate gives that there are less than 1000 people on the entire damn planet who know what is going on and willing to do the easiest move! (And two of them are relatives of mine, they became Bitcoiners the moment they understood what it is, just like me). What the hell? This is scary!

You forgot to factor in the people who either just haven't found bitcoin and those who are extremely lost when it comes to computers.

Besides that, WAY TO GO!! Wink

A lot of people seem to just get stuck around 120000, and once they've gotten past by downloading the block chain they only have smooth sailing.  I believe I read that the the blockchain size is hitting an old buffer and developers are working on a solution to the problem.

hi booklover, thanks for your info-i will excuse your spelling if you excuse my ignorance. if its ok we will need to go step by step! i downloaded the bitcoin prog about 10 days ago so it might be the newer version. because i have no transactions yet i presume the wallet is empty! i only know i have one because i have encrypted it under settings. but as to how to copy the wallet to my docs i don't know how unless you mean copy the client complete with wallet to my docs? i have the origional client in downloads anyway.               ( 0.4-win 32  23/09/2011  11MB) someone suggested it was downloading but my speed was too slow and suggested opening port 8333 but i do not know how to do that!.  what do you advise-shall i asume the prog is ok and try to open a port to get more connections or just delete everything and start again as my wallet shows o anyway? regards reg.

No don't delete everything, I fairly sure I know how to solve this.  If I understand you correctly then many other people have had this problem and successfully fixed it.

Here is the step by step for a windows7 computer, if you have a different version of windows then your wallet may be in C:\documents and settings\Your username\program files\bitcoin.

*'s are note's for the next step

1)Backing up your wallet

1-a)Make sure the client is not running before you proceed.

*To get to your wallet you need to show hidden folders.

1-b)Search folder options in the start menu and open Folder Options.

1-c)Click on the view tab and double click the Hidden files and folders file if it is not open.

1-d)Click the button labeled, "Show hidden files, folders, and drivers".

*To get to C double click Computer in the start menu.
**You wallet is in this folder you can know COPY it to a safe place.

     1-e)Go to C/Users/"Your username"/Appdata/Roaming/Bitcoin

1-f)COPY the file labeled wallet to a safe place.

2)Fixing you problem

2-a)Download the block chain from one of these links:

http://we.lovebitco.in/blockchain-152663.7z.001 (100MB)
http://we.lovebitco.in/blockchain-152663.7z.002 (100MB)
http://we.lovebitco.in/blockchain-152663.7z.003 (100MB)
http://we.lovebitco.in/blockchain-152663.7z.004 (100MB)
http://we.lovebitco.in/blockchain-152663.7z.005 (100MB)
http://we.lovebitco.in/blockchain-152663.7z.006 (88MB)
(Links are no longer valid)

*You may not be to extract the files without 7zip file manager.
**7zip file manager has to be downloaded from the internet but I don't have a link for you.

2-b)Extract the files if they are zipped files.

     2-c)Go to C/Users/"Your username"/Appdata/Roaming/Bitcoin

2-d)Replace blk0001 and blkindex with the files you just downloaded/extracted.

*If you don't have a shortcut, you can just make one.
*It's not important where the shortcut is as long as it is a shortcut.

2-e)Go to your bitcoin shortcut on your desktop and right-click it.

2-f)In the field next to Target: scroll all the to the right and type -rescan

     2-g)Click Apply then Okay.

2-h)Start up your client and see if it works!

P.S. If you run into any problems post in this thread and let me know.
410  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: genuine non technical newbi needs help on: November 18, 2011, 01:36:32 PM
Here are a few steps to try:

1)COPY your wallet to a safe place(My Documents for example).  This is always a good idea before you go messing around with your client's file which you will probably have to do.

2)If you do not have the latest version f the client it would be a good idea to update it. I believe they removed the buffer which was causing this problem.

3)If step 2 doesn't work, then you should download the block chain(blk0001 and blkindex)and replace the files currently in your client's directory with those.

If you run into any problems because of my poor speed spelling or need to know some thing not stated here, just post and I will answer as soon as I can.

412  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Unable to bind to port 8333 - Bitcoin Won't Start! on: October 20, 2011, 12:52:02 AM
Just wondering, but did you open task manager and check to see if bitcoin.exe was running?
413  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Problems communicating with bitcoin RPC on: October 19, 2011, 10:13:16 PM
If that doesn't work make sure you have all the fields filled in like so:
Host: localhost
Port: 8332
Username: (yourusername)
password: (yourpassword)
Device: (yourGPU)
Flags: -v(or blank)
CPU affinity: checked

If It still doesn't work change your miner to other, set a static IP on your computer, and change host to: (yourstaticIP)
414  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to forward port 8333 through TOR? on: October 19, 2011, 02:27:09 PM
I'm doing both.  My pool miners are working just fine.

My problem is I'm having trouble getting ANY connections on my solo server.
415  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to forward port 8333 through TOR? on: October 19, 2011, 01:46:19 PM
http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=23768.msg331131#msg331131

Ive used the info from that post to forward port 8344 (you could choose any port you want) over Tor and through a firewall that only allows port 80 connections.

TL:DR - Use an program called "socat"

Where did you download socat from?
416  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to forward port 8333 through TOR? on: October 19, 2011, 01:40:48 PM
Correct, but that doesn't work with TOR.  There are no port forwards.  There are hidden services, but that's not really what you want.

When you're running in TOR just let it connect outbound and don't worry about trying to boost the number.  You'll still get 8 which is plenty for a personal wallet.

Alright maybe this isn't the best way to boost my connections, but I still need to try some thing because:

I would really like to get more than eight connections because I'm mining.
For some reason lately I not getting even eight connections and I've already tried other options, for example; I've added about 30 addnode= commands to my bitcoin.conf file.
417  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to forward port 8333 through TOR? on: October 19, 2011, 01:35:59 AM
I have a static network IP address not a static internet IP address.  I'm trying to do this because I've read multiple times on the forum to forward your IP if you want to boost the number of your connections.

I probably don't know what I'm talking about but I'm fairly sure from what I've read there is no need to publish my internet IP so people can connect. Undecided
418  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / How to forward port 8333 through TOR? on: October 19, 2011, 12:57:09 AM
I have searched the threads and have not found enough information for to accomplish this.  I already have the BTC client running through TOR, I have a static IP address, and I know where to go to alter settings on my router.  What I don't know is how to configure the router and what to change on TOR and/or the client for this to work  I'm not sure if it is even possible to forward port 8333 through TOR so any input would appreciated.

Thanks for even reading this thread.

Just food for thought;  You might want to add certain account exemptions for people who can prove they are not a bot-net, or else you may lose all you TOR users.
