221  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wikipedia Accepting Donations on: July 29, 2011, 06:21:06 PM
The best way would be if a lot of people simply mailed them and requested a Bitcoin donation button. Pledging to donate if one is implemented may also help.
222  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mt.Gox/AurumXchange Partnership - European Transfers Now Available on: July 29, 2011, 06:03:50 PM
I can't even trade them back to BTC to take them to TradeHill or another service, since the money is not on my account anymore, it's in a limbo state (withdrawn but not arrived to the bank account).
Yes you can. I did. Send a support ticket to Mt. Gox, and you will get the money back in your account. However, Tradehill SEPA withdrawals are also gone at the moment, until sometime next week.
223  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tradehill SEPA account frozen! on: July 29, 2011, 05:04:57 PM
Is this genuine?  I started a SEPA transfer yesterday and I'd hate to lose that money.. haven't received any communication from tradehill related to problems.

I didn't receive any communication from Mt. Gox either when the same thing happened with them. Your funds should arrive, though, but they will be late.
224  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Chargeback system on: July 29, 2011, 04:41:47 PM
One of the reasons Bitcoin exists is because people want to avoid chargebacks.

That's an oversimplifcation.

Bitcoin exists so that there's a decentralized digital currency that, at the base level, does not allow chargebacks, just as physical cash does not.

However, Bitcoin is certainly not intended to prevent people who want such a feature from layering a chargeback-allowing protocol on top of the basic Bitcoin protocol, for users who really want such a feature.  This is the role played by Bitcoin escrow services, and whatever other services people are coming up with.

Similarly, physical cash does not itself allow chargebacks, but it allows people to layer systems on top of this that allow chargebacks.

Bitcoin is supposed to take the role of cash, not prevent analogous mechanisms from interfacing with it to reduce the reliance on trust between the transacting parties.

Still, to the extent that you want to modify the Bitcoin protocol *itself* to allow chargebacks, you can GTFO and take your phail with you.
Of course.

However, what I was trying to say is that there probably won't be much interest in a service like this because the lack of chargebacks is one of the very reasons people are drawn to bitcoin. A service that removes that aspect won't be very desireable to the bitcoin community.

I do not object to the existence of such a service, I'm merely claiming there probably won't be much interest.

226  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do we get the women on board? on: July 29, 2011, 03:53:09 PM
I wonder when the first bitcoin online sex shop's gonna open? I mean, girls would love that. Buying a toy anonymously.
I've heard one already exists.

Not impossible but still extremely uncommon in proportion to most female computer geeks!
Really, all the female computer geeks I know are very attractive. But maybe that's a thing that only applies here in Sweden. Cheesy
227  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do we get the women on board? on: July 29, 2011, 03:05:09 PM
Wow! You're that hot and a total computer geek!
Actually not as uncommon as one might think. I know several very, very attractive female computer geeks, of which one is my girlfriend.
Mind pointing out a few more? Grin
Haha, if you live in Sweden, maybe I can hook you up Wink Cheesy
228  Other / Meta / Re: Signature Spamming Is Out of Control on: July 29, 2011, 02:56:50 PM
The point is that we shouldn't have to use Ad Block in the forum to block other members spam.
I don't feel it is spam in any way. I think it's a good thing Bitcoin businesses have a good way of advertising their services and goods for free.

A compromise would be to either:

1. Add an option to disable images in signatures. Default off.
2. Only show a user's signature once per page in a thread. For example if someone makes three posts on one page, only the first post on that page will have his signature in it. I've seen some forums implement this, and it works rather well.
229  Other / Meta / Re: Signature Spamming Is Out of Control on: July 29, 2011, 02:36:18 PM
^ Problem is, that hides ALL signatures. I'm guessing he only wants to hide images.

Me, I don't mind banners at all. They're not that distracting. You guys could always try using AdBlock, and manually block all the banners that annoy you.

Flagged as scam/fraud. Everyone else should flag it as well.
231  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tradehill SEPA account frozen! on: July 29, 2011, 02:19:03 PM
Oh, that's just great... I just canceled my withdrawal with MtGox because it had taken two weeks and I would have to wait one additional week, and Tradehill now has SEPA, so I was going to use them instead... and now this happens.

So... no (easy) way for us Europeans to withdraw money until next week, then, I guess.

Female?
Good looking?
from Germany?
lets talk about it!!
Good looking, oh yes. But sadly neither female nor German. But maybe I could send my girlfriend to Germany so we can earn some extra cash? Cheesy
234  Economy / Services / Re: [FOR SALE] Expert sysadmin to set up your bitcoin farm. The sky is the limit. on: July 29, 2011, 01:50:59 PM
Uh, not really. If he really builds those rigs for only the cost of the graphics cards, then he's probably saving money this way. Building a machine that can run three 6990s for example, costs around $800. Three 6990s = ~2100 mh/s. To achieve 8 gh/s, you'd need four of these machines. This means an additional initial investment of $3200, and I doubt the machines would even live long enough to make that money back in elecricity savings.

Beg to differ, good sir.

See my sig for a computer that can handle 4, and it only cost $400, not including Win 7 which I bought but isn't necessary.

Ah, yeah, a big part of that cost was assuming you want a chassis. I just took a machine from the wiki. But okay, let's assume your machine instead.

That's ~2800 mh/s per machine. You need approximately three of these machines to achieve 8 gh/s. 3 x 400 = 1200, meaning an additional initial investment of $1200. This is much less than the earlier example, but saving $1200 in electricity costs will take a very long time. Again, probably longer than the lifetime of the cards in question.

Of course, in a normal scenario, electricity is the most important consideration. But in cases where the difference in initial investment is so large, initial costs can be far more important.
235  Economy / Lending / Re: Need a small loan on: July 29, 2011, 01:45:15 PM
I think this is a great new way for people to make money with bitcoin. Could we maybe open up a loan section of the forum so places like IBB (great people to work with btw) and others here like Moonshadow can have public loan and things of this nature.
Though you also have to keep in mind it is a very high-risk investment. MoonShadow is making a pretty big leap of faith here, even though it's not exactly the biggest sum of money ever. From his perspective, it is very likely I will just run off with the money. After all, I'm just a newbie who doesn't even have any EBay feedback.

ROI is huge, though. 120% in this case.
236  Economy / Lending / Re: Need a small loan on: July 28, 2011, 11:54:47 PM
I hereby acknowledge that I, Yuusha, owe 10 BTC to MoonShadow, to be repaid no later than September 15th. This debt will be repaid with an interest of 20%, for a total of 12 BTC.

This thread will remain open until the debt has been repaid, in case either party wants to discuss any aspect of the deal in public. After successful repayment, the thread will be locked by myself.
237  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do we get the women on board? on: July 28, 2011, 10:47:28 PM
Think about it RATIONALLY -- why do stereotypes refuse to die? The one about women liking to shop? The one about software engineers being male?
Because they are repeated so often that people feel obligated to fit into the stereotype. People adjust to the stereotypes because they don't want to be "weird".
238  Economy / Services / Re: Bitcoin Mining Center on: July 28, 2011, 03:17:56 AM
Haha, mom's basement is actually pretty accurate. I don't want to expand. But I think there could definitely be some interest in a service like this, considering the cheap electricity and not having to take care of the rig yourself.

Things that will hold people back are:

1. The risk. You could just run off with the machines at any time.
2. The shipping costs. Anyone who would need cheaper electricity is not likely to live in the United States, as the US has generally cheap electricity (at least from what I've heard from users here) while electricity in for example Australia can cost $0.30 - $0.40 kw/h, and here in Sweden common prices are $0.18 - $0.25.

Other than that, it's a good, desirable service.
239  Economy / Services / Re: Bitcoin Mining Center on: July 28, 2011, 02:19:37 AM
Would use it if I didn't get free electricity and the service had been running for a few months reliably.
240  Economy / Services / Re: [FOR SALE] Expert sysadmin to set up your bitcoin farm. The sky is the limit. on: July 28, 2011, 01:11:12 AM
lol. good luck if you want to buy a service from him.

regardless of whether the parts costed you anything, in the long run, electricity is the main cost after all the equipment is paid off.
