2661  Other / Off-topic / Latin question on: October 31, 2014, 02:26:11 AM
I was thinking of naming a Bitcoin organization "Lunae Libertas", which I intend to have a meaning similar to "Lunar Liberty", but I don't know any Latin. Is this correct?

The idea is that the organization will (in part) work to ensure that we'll still have liberty in the Bitcoin ecosystem once we've gotten "to the moon!!!".
2662  Economy / Auctions / Advertise on this forum - Round 136 on: October 29, 2014, 04:05:05 AM
The forum sells ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page. About 25% of ad income goes to the forum moderators as thanks for all of their work. (There are many moderators, so each moderator gets only a small amount -- moderators should be seen as volunteers, not employees.) The rest is stored in the forum's treasury (verifiably), where it sits until the forum needs it.

Ads are allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser (Firefox, 700px wide). Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons, and I may remove ads even after they are accepted.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here. Ads appear only on topic pages with more than one post, and only for people using the default theme.

The ad lasts at least 7 days starting from when I put it up. (However, if you look at the ad history you'll see that ads usually get at least 8 days, and sometimes as many as 10, but this is random and definitely not guaranteed.)

Ad blocking

Hero members, Donators, VIPs, and moderators have the ability to disable ads. I don't expect many people to use this option. These people don't increase the impression counts for your ads.

I try to bypass Adblock Plus filters as much as possible, though this is not guaranteed. It is difficult or impossible for ABP filters to block the ad space itself without blocking posts. However, filters can match against the URLs in your links, your CSS classes and style attributes, and the HTML structure of your ads.

To prevent matches against URLs: I have some JavaScript which fixes links blocked by ABP. You must tell me if you want this for your ads. When someone with ABP and JavaScript enabled views your ads, your links are changed to a special randomized bitcointalk.org URL which redirects to your site when visited. People without ABP are unaffected, even if they don't have JavaScript enabled. The downsides are:
- ABP users will see the redirection link when they hover over the link, even if they disable ABP for the forum.
- Getting referral stats might become even more difficult.
- Some users might get a warning when redirecting from https to http.

To prevent matching on CSS classes/styles: Don't use inline CSS. I can give your ad a CSS class that is randomized on each pageload, but you must request this.

To prevent matching against your HTML structure: Use only one <a> and no other tags if possible. If your ads get blocked because of matching done on something inside of your ad, you are responsible for noticing this and giving me new ad HTML.

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

I reserve the right to reject bids, even days after the bid is made. In particular, bids from people with less than 15 activity points are likely to be rejected. I recommend not getting into a bidding war with someone who has less than 15 activity points, as their bids might not be accepted, but your latest bids will still stand. If you need to know right away whether someone's bids will be accepted, PM me.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

The notation "2 @ 5" means 2 slots for 5 BTC each. Not 2 slots for 5 BTC total.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.05.
- The bidding starts at 0.50.
- I will end the auction at an arbitrary time no more than 12 days from now. (I will probably end the auction 1-3 days before the ads are scheduled to go up.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If these rules are confusing, look at some of the past forum ad auctions to see how it's done.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slots may be sold to someone else, and I might even give you a negative trust rating. I will send you the payment information via forum PM from this account ("theymos", user ID 35). You might receive false payment information from scammers pretending to be me. They might even have somewhat similar usernames. Be careful.

2664  Other / Meta / Imperial Coin trademark takedown on: October 29, 2014, 02:38:24 AM
I received a seemingly-valid takedown demand from Imperial Coin (IPC). As a result, I removed the following three threads:
[ANN][IMP] Imperial - New coin in development
[OLD] IMPERIALCOIN - VIEW NEW THREAD!
[ANN] [IMP] ImperialCoin 1.0 - FULL RELEASE - MULTI-ALGO! NEW EXCHANGES!

If anyone posted something interesting to one of those threads, post about it here and I can probably give you those individual posts.

I forgot to create this auction right after the last one ended as I usually do, so this auction will be shorter than usual. It will end late on Monday or Tuesday (US Central time).

2667  Other / Meta / Re: Password reset log on: October 25, 2014, 11:46:36 PM
I added color-coding to the usernames in this log. That'll make it easier to pick out more valuable accounts from the list. The colors are the same as the colors on Who's Online:
- Admins = red
- Global mods = dark blue
- Donators = green
- VIPs = violet
- Staff = pink
- Regular users are various shades of grey, getting darker with seniority.
- Legendary = lightish blue

Also, I made the "reset recently" text darker and larger.
2668  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin over tor [vulnerabilities] on: October 25, 2014, 08:55:19 PM
Users who want to run "pure Tor" should run their nodes as a hidden service and connect primarily to hidden service peers. Users who want to support the network and are not worried about being identified should run their nodes both as a hidden service and as a "normal" plaintext peer. This way, the visible IP addresses are not Tor exit nodes but actual Bitcoin nodes which should be able to pre-filter bad content before the network at large has to see it (and thereby avoid getting unknowingly banned out by an attacker). The downside here is that it requires overcoming a network catch-22; until there are enough real nodes visible as both Tor hidden services and as IP addresses, the few Tor hidden service nodes existing today ca be easily blackholed.

A major problem with that is that one IP can run any number of hidden services with different hidden service addresses, so a Sybil attack is also pretty easy there. Bitcoin Core tries to make this a bit more difficult by partitioning the set of all possible .onion addresses into 16 groups and only connecting to hidden services in different groups, but I don't think that this is actually very effective because an attacker can easily fill all 16 groups with his hidden services.

One sort-of-solution would be for Tor nodes to always connect to a couple of trusted nodes in addition to some normal nodes. This increases centralization, but Tor is already very centralized, so I don't know that it'd be much worse.
2669  Other / Meta / Re: Factoid Spots on: October 25, 2014, 04:24:08 AM
I removed the dead links.

If anyone has any suggestions for new factoids, post them here and I might add them. Factoids should be:
- Interesting, informative, or funny. The ones I wrote (most of them) are mainly focused on Bitcoin technology and history, but other Bitcoin-relevant topics could also be discussed.
- Not obvious to 99% of readers. Ideally, readers will learn something from the factoids, and maybe even be surprised.
- Not offensive
- Less than ~250 characters
- Very unobtrusive. (Much less flashy than regular forum ads.)

I probably won't add factoids that consist only of links. The factoids are supposed to be interesting in themselves. (Donators each get to choose a factoid, which explains some of the existing links and strangeness within the factoids.)

2673  Other / Meta / Re: FUN FACT: bitcointalk.org and bitcoin.org hosted on same web server on: October 23, 2014, 02:58:59 AM

You need to go back to Internet detective school...

bitcoin.net and bitcoins.org resolve to the forum's IP, where an HTTP redirect sends people to bitcoin.org. This implies nothing about bitcoin.org's ownership. bitcoin.org is hosted on a different server. It just means that I own bitcoin.net and bitcoins.org and redirect them to bitcoin.org.

I am in fact co-owner of the bitcoin.org domain name, though your evidence doesn't prove this. You'd be better off finding one of the several times I've mentioned this publicly...

2675  Other / Meta / Password reset log on: October 19, 2014, 03:49:15 AM
Whenever a user changes his own password or resets his account (via email or secret question), this action is now publicly logged here for 30 days:
https://bitcointalk.org/seclog.php

Additionally, these same actions will be listed on the person's Trust page. A reset will be shown for 30 days, while a password change will be shown for 3 days.

This should make it easier to determine whether an account has been compromised.
2676  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: sendrawtransaction length limit need HELP on: October 16, 2014, 02:19:10 PM
Break the transaction in half. You don't need to resend the exact same transaction if the network has already forgotten about the first one.

Nope.
2678  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk.org HTTP timeout problem on: October 15, 2014, 11:44:54 PM
You're not allowed to access the forum more frequently that once per second on average.

I think that each time you send a request to https://bitcointalk.org/, you also download all of the image/CSS assets. Doing this several times puts you over the burst limit. I see this sort of limit being reached by your IP in the logs.
2679  Other / Meta / Re: POODLE vulnerability on: October 15, 2014, 11:24:02 PM
Btw, POODLE? Quite a letdown, after cool names like Heartbleed and Shellshock.

Yeah, it's a terrible name. The vulnerability isn't nearly as bad as Heartbleed or Shellshock, though.
2680  Other / Meta / Re: POODLE vulnerability on: October 15, 2014, 11:18:40 PM
Should we consider PIA to be an untrusted proxy, or should be generally be safe with them?
So only "untrustworthy ISP" and TOR users are affected, everyone else safe? I hate changing PW's. More susceptible to forget them.

You'll have to use your own judgement on that. Do you trust that your VPN/ISP didn't use this attack against you to steal your password?

Some things to know:
- It's an active attack, so if your ISP was just recording traffic, this wouldn't help them now.
- If you didn't actually use your password to log in within the last couple of days (ie, not just logging in using "remember me"), then your ISP only could have stolen your password if they'd known about the vulnerability before it was publicly announced.
