I redid the top 15 from my rough result using more complex & accurate regular expressions:


- ETC may be somewhat under-counted because any instance of "ETC" at the end of a sentence will not count, in order to avoid counting all-caps lists (eg. "SELLING BOOKS MOVIES ETC.").
- Dash may be a little over-counted because someone might use the English word dash without referring to the coin, and that'd count. There's no good way to avoid this.
- I figured out that Synereo was so massively over-counted previously because before posts are stored in the database, all instances of "&" are translated to "&", which counted for them. In these more accurate results, I reversed such mangling and parsed bbcode before counting.

It was actually 100% random. Each user got between 1 and 4 coins, with fewer being more likely, and for each you would get a random cryptocurrency. I organized the cryptocurrencies into three tiers according to recognizability/popularity: tier 1 coins were more likely than tier 2 coins, which were more likely than tier 3. Then a random title was added to each coin name. There were a little less than 100 coins in total: I took the top 100 based on market cap and discarded a few that seemed to have never had any real interest.

But as I'd hoped, even though it was random, plenty of people just happened to have badges that were complete matches or mismatches.

The AI which assigns these icons knows all. You must really be a Synereo shill in disguise. I'm shocked!

Hero/Legendary members, Donators, VIPs, and moderators have the ability to disable ads. I don't expect many people to use this option. These people don't increase the impression stats for your ads.

I try to bypass Adblock Plus filters as much as possible, though this is not guaranteed. It is difficult or impossible for ABP filters to block the ad space itself without blocking posts. However, filters can match against the URLs in your links, your CSS classes and style attributes, and the HTML structure of your ads.

To prevent matches against URLs: I have some JavaScript which fixes links blocked by ABP. You must tell me if you want this for your ads. When someone with ABP and JavaScript enabled views your ads, your links are changed to a special randomized bitcointalk.org URL which redirects to your site when visited. People without ABP are unaffected, even if they don't have JavaScript enabled. The downsides are:
- ABP users will see the redirection link when they hover over the link, even if they disable ABP for the forum.
- Getting referral stats might become even more difficult.
- Some users might get a warning when redirecting from https to http.

To prevent matching on CSS classes/styles: Don't use inline CSS. I can give your ad a CSS class that is randomized on each pageload, but you must request this.

To prevent matching against your HTML structure: Use only one <a> and no other tags if possible. If your ads get blocked because of matching done on something inside of your ad, you are responsible for noticing this and giving me new ad HTML.

Recently I was interested in how popular each cryptocurrency is on the forum, so I counted the number of mentions for each top-100 coin over the last 30 days of extant forum posts. A post counts as a mention if the "name" or "abbr" in the following table occurred as a separate word in that post's body or subject, case-insensitively. So for example the word "translation" wouldn't count for ION because ion isn't a separate word there. But "what time is it?" would count for Chronobank because Chronobank has the symbol "TIME", which is why Chronobank's number is very inflated. Note that every reply to a topic usually has the topic's title as its subject, which can count as a mention.

It's not perfect, but I only wanted a rough idea.

The person who controls his account gained access via email-password-reset, so his email is probably also compromised.

It seems to me that someone guessed Gleb's password using the password hashes stolen in 2015, since Gleb didn't change his password since then. The Glebonator account may be due to the attacker trying a new password-cracking attack against accounts in alphabetical order, or due to specifically targeting Gleb and incorrectly believing that that account belonged to him, or because Glebonator is the attacker.

Yeah, the forum uses UTC offsets rather than actual timezones (like "America/New_York"), so you have to adjust the offset after daylight-savings changes.

BU's code as written already allows miners to steal anyone's BTC because it doesn't verify signatures on transactions in "old" blocks, but the apparent age of a block is controlled by miners.


That is a made-up article with completely fabricated quotes.

My proposal is that if quantum computers make it a very high risk that millions of lost BTC will be "un-lost", then those BTC should be destroyed (not redistributed) before they can be taken by thieves. Everyone would have years to move their coins into secure addresses before this would happen, and anyone who failed to do so would almost certainly have their coins stolen due to weakened crypto anyway. From this proposal, dishonest people jumped to the idea that because it's possible that Satoshi's coins could be destroyed by this, that therefore I was proposing destroying Satoshi's coins, when that is absolutely not the point, and in fact an undesirable outcome. The ideal outcome would be that everyone would move their coins to secure addresses and that no coins would need to be destroyed.

A big issue with this is that although online nodes might be able to detect a long invalid chain, nodes that were offline at the time (or didn't exist yet) have no way of independently verifying that invalid blocks actually existed then. Maybe the invalid blocks were created much later in order to trigger a PoW change earlier than appropriate on some nodes, splitting the network.

You could make a rule that a block is allowed to change the PoW if it presents headers for an invalid chain of length > 50 or something, with the fork point close to the new-PoW block. So once a long invalid chain comes into existence, anyone can create the first new-PoW block containing the invalid chain's headers. This can be more readily verified later on.

Exactly what the new PoW should be is a complicated issue with years of past discussion already...

None of these sites are official, and you should never enter your password there. Maybe some of these sites are intended for bypassing various blacklists such as China's great firewall, but more likely they steal login information or do other nefarious things.

I think that Adblock Plus's EasyList has once again messed up the forum by incompetently trying to block forum ads. Disable ABP.

The rough idea of a hardfork being a change to the consensus rules requiring old nodes to upgrade has remained basically the same forever.

I agree with gmaxwell's old response to my post here classifying the version checksum as a hardfork; since that didn't affect the consensus rules, it wasn't a proper hardfork. It did have very similar effects as a hardfork, though, and it's the closest model to the sort of planned-in-advance hardfork often talked about. I'm on the fence about whether BIP 50 can be classified as a hardfork, and it's also very different from any hardfork that would be planned.
