Just commissioned a BTC art piece from WoodCollector.

It will be a 12" Cocobolo piece with some carving detail.  The work will convey motion through space and time, will be able to stand on its own and as such should be viewable and enjoyable from 360 degrees.

Transaction details can be viewed here.

Confirmed.

Thank you Smiley

Yeah Cheesy There's this guy I chatted to a bit who buys gemstones in the Thailand market, so like you I'll probably come here first if I want anything particularly exotic so there's definitely a lot of potential here, oh and I spotted cuban cigars at one time though I don't know where that guy has gone.

I'd like to know where the Cuban cigar guy went. It's been a while since i had a good Cuban. I made a cigar tube and end punch for a client last year out of Amboyna Burl and when he came to pick it up he gave me a Cuban. Best 47 minutes of my year last year thats for sure, dying to get my hands on another.

Hey WoodCollector, hope to have dry samples of each type of wood (including Rose Jacaranda and Imbuia) for you by the first week of December.

Thanks a ton Lagsalot, Let me know when they are dry and their dimensions and we can figure out a price / shipping arrangements.

It was awesome seeing you guys work out those deals woodcollector, well done, not sure how I feel as an artist myself about the Bitcoin currency symbol being art though ;S lol I think it's a waste of good wood to be honest but at least he paid you well for the it. Being able to easily transfer money and import stuff that otherwise would be pretty difficult to do in other currencies is precisely what cryptocurrency was made for.

It took a lot of thought process on how one could turn the Bitcoin symbol into art.

I agree that importing difficult stuff is exactly what Bitcoin is for. Over the past 2 weeks i have been able to import just shy of $17,000 worth of exotic woods from around the world. Now including what i think will be my favorite "flavor of the month" Pure African Blackwood and the seller was able to get me a good size chunk of it. It is for sure going on the lathe when it arrives next week. It is without a doubt 1000% easier to do with Bitcoin and buying direct from someone than it is to go through my normal brokers. I had no idea what to expect when i set out to buy exotic wood with bitcoin, and no idea i would get such a huge response. Not only that, so many orders for custom work for so many different things from this forum. I am fairly new to Bitcoin and had some reservations coming in, but i have to say I'm a Bitcoiner for life now. It felt good to tell my wood broker when he called me yesterday to see if i had my order for the week together yet, "I got it handled already, i had it shipped in directly from Africa, Brasil, Guam, Hawaii, Etc" and its all thanks to Bitcoin

Commissioned by: Blazedout419
Material: Premiere grade quilted Watermelon Ivory (A rare form of Pink Ivory)
Price: $14,000 usd

The Hive is a representation of the hive mind that drives Bitcoin and its great communities and is hand carved into one of the the most expensive and rare woods on the planet. Pink Ivory wood is listed on the top 10 most expensive woods in the world and Watermelon Ivory is an ultra rare form of Pink Ivory which is no longer listed or classified as it only grows naturally and 99.99% of the time only in trees exceeding 500 years of age. Pink Ivory trees are protected and thus only allowed to be harvest if they are commercially grown directly for harvest which eliminates access to Watermelon Ivory all together unless the tree was fell prior to its listing on the protected list.

A special thanks to Blazedout419 as without his commissioning me to create this great piece this luxurious and beautiful wood would have probably been turned into some rich snobs cigar box or his wife's jewelry box.

How much would you charge for an 10-12" tall about 1.5" thick BTC with a small base so it can sit on a desk probably want it out of zebrawood or white and black ebony with alot of black lines through the ebony?

I could do a roughly 12" by 9" by roughly 1.25" thick BTC out of zebra wood with a base for between $400-$500. That would be fully finished to1,200 grit with Anti UV sealer so the grain never fades and 2 coats of Polycrylic finish. That would be just for a standard BTC. If you want an Art piece, fully carved with fine detail it would be roughly $600-$1,800 depending on how extravagant you want it. Which blazedout419 will tell you is a hell of a deal as i did a full detailed art carving on his $14,000 piece made from the rarest wood on earth.

For black and white ebony, a standard 12" BTC will run you about $900-$1,000 If you live outside the USA shipping it to you is going to be expensive as most all forms of Ebony wood now require documentation when going through customs. For a fully carved in fine detail art piece in black and whtie ebony it would be $1,500 up to $3,000 depending on how extravagant you want it.

As with all pieces you will get a certificate of authenticity which uses the blockchain and vanity address to verify that it is authentic and made by me. The certificate normally ships 2-8 days after the piece does as it takes time to generate the private keys to match the address signed on the piece.

All funds must be placed in escrow prior to me starting work on the piece. I am ok with Blazedout419 or Tomatocage as escrow.

Hmmm decisions decisions.  I could go either way tbh.  Do you have any pics of what your standard piece vs an art piece looks like just to see the differences?  I will probably go with an art piece though.  I will take this to PM after this message to not clutter up your WTB thread.

Thanks for that Smiley

Not cluttering up the WTB thread that is, much appreciated.

So I was just shown my piece I commissioned...and WOW...just WOW. I had started out wanting a plain old BTC with a cool looking wood, and this is way more than I would have ever thought of! I will show it off once it is all the way done, but I am really happy with how it turned out.

What kind of wood have you chosen?

I told him to just surprise me and he selected Watermelon Ivory for it. The intricate designs on it are really amazing...I can only imagine how much time it must have taken him.

87 hours of carving to be exact  Wink

I'm getting it set up in the photo booth now, then it will be on its way to your front door.

Hi,

Have you made any work with black & white ebony that you can show?

I think I'm in love with that wood  Grin

How expensive is it?

Do you also make furniture or just smaller pieces?

I have worked with black and white ebony before, i did a few pool cue's for a clients sons birthday gift, and a dildo for a female client and her husband. I am sure i can dig up some pictures over the next few days.

Pricing varies, the wood alone depending on grade and size can get rather expensive. If you were talking you wanted a Pen or a Cigar tube for storing your cigar you would be talking $150 or so, A pool cue would run about $500-$800. A guitar body would run around $4,500, small table - about $8,000. Exotic species don't sell by the b.f. in most cases as it is harder to find larger pieces so the price of a larger single piece of the wood could fetch as much as 600% per b.f. than one half its size in some cases.

I have made functional art for clients in the past, Dining tables, Desks, end tables and coffee tables, Wine racks, etc. but again i only work in exotic wood and prices for functional art start at $5,000 for the most basic like a end table.

Thanks Shorena, much appreciated. cant wait to see the new forum

I know the sooner were away from SMF the better in all honesty.

Agreed, i use to host a very large SMF community forum for wood turning then when my brother the cyber security professional showed me how easy it was to hack on so many levels i just shut it down as i was not making any money from it and i didnt want anyone's info to get hacked.

This must be the most unique offer I've seen.

I live in Greece, I can get you any kind of wood you can think of from here. We have some of the nicest olive trees where I live.

Can you mill 6"x6"x18" square stock? If so i would be interested in some Olive Wood,  Also some Rose Wood if you have some that grows close to you.

ATTENTION FLORIDA BITCOINERS

If you live close to, or know someone who owns an orange or mango farm i am looking for mango and osage orange wood. Mango farmers typically cut down the trees every 7-15 years and orange trees when they get over grown. Please contact me and let me know if you have access and in what quantity and we can work out pricing on it. i would be interested in anything from a few pieces to a truck load.

Hi all,

Semi-new to the forum and just trying to figure things out. I went to go fill in all my profile info today and it says changing forum avatars is not possible at this time. I just wanted to know, is this something that has been disabled on the forum? something that i need to have "X" amount of posts before i can have? or how does it all work?

Thanks guys
476  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTB] Exotic woods from around the world with Bitcoin on: November 16, 2014, 05:21:53 PM

OK, got it. I can certainly have it milled if we trade in bulk. I'm still searching for a good local source of Jacaranda and Imbuia, perhaps I'll also find other varieties. Here is the current list of woods I can get from Zimbabwe, in order of the easiest to hardest to acquire and transport to South Africa for international shipping:

Kiaat (red)
Ironwood (black)
Mopane & Tambootie
Olivewood

I've made it clear that you're only interested in specific, dark colours of Kiaat and Ironwood. Fungayi says this is assured if he sends only the heartwood, which will be free of other colours and imperfections ("checks?").

Some trees are on national park land and some on privately-held farms. Fungayi will obtain paperwork for any wood he cuts. He has the necessary permit to then bring the wood over the border into SA.

Fungayi has been working with wood for over 20 years so knows how to select only the best quality material.

He does not have his own transport or power tools. For larger quantities, he'll have to buy or rent a truck, pickup or even "scotch cart" (animal-drawn cart) and purchase a chainsaw and other tools. Finding labourers won't be a problem.

I suggest we start small and see how it goes. If everything runs smoothly, we can expand to shipping a container of any of the above woods (and perhaps source other varieties), milled to your stated dimensions. All these woods can be found in abundance.

To begin, Fungayi can bring me a log of Kiaat as darkly red and close to your dimensions of 24" x 6-12" (61cm x 15 - 30cm) as he can find. I will then dry it out and ship it to you, probably via DHL as I've worked with them before. The SA Post Office is not an option for shipping, as they're currently on strike (and unreliable in general).

Would you prefer a raw Kiaat log with the bark still on or the heartwood only? Given that, could you please let me know roughly what you'd pay for such a piece (excluding shipping) over the range of 6 to 12 inches in diameter? This will help me greatly in concluding a deal with Fungayi. I'll send a photograph before shipping and won't insist on the quoted price if the wood doesn't meet your expectations.

I prefer milled stock for larger quantities, square cut to 4"x4"x14", 6"x6"x18" or 8"x8"x24" Below is some pricing assuming it is FAS grade lumber in order of size 4" 6" then 8" square cut

Red Kiaat: $14.85, $16.95, $19.71
Ironwood: $12.45, $15.88, $21.21
Mopane & Tambootie: Each piece needs to be graded to be priced so i would require a photo on each piece to grade it
Olivewood: He would have to have access to at least 50 trees in order to make it profitable for him to cut this. so lets leave this one out for now.

If you can have him square cut a piece of Kiaat to one of the above dimensions i will pay a little extra for a single sample just so i can ensure quality, Then if the quality is up to par i would like to order a small ISBU load of Red Kiaat which is roughly  1,000 pieces at 6x6x18" which would be $17,000 USD and i would arrange delivery of the container for him to fill and arrange having it picked up.

Both end grains on each cut would need to be spray painted with latex paint to ensure they do not crack during shipment, and each piece of stock would need to air dry for 3-4 weeks before being loaded into the container to cut back on shipping roughly 80 gallons of ground water from Africa to the United States.

Thanks to all who got me wood last week, most of it has arrived already  Smiley !!!!!!!

I am back buying again and am especially interested in wood from Africa, Central or South America, or Hawaii this week as my stock levels are getting very low.

Anything from Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Burma?

What do you have access to? Its impossible to say without knowing what you can get. There is not much in the way of exotic wood in Vietnam, but Thailand, Cambodia and Burma have a ton of species of exotic trees some quite valuable if you have the permit to cut them. If you can get me a list of things you can get either yourself or through your friends shop i can tell you what i would like to buy.

I am meeting my friend for lunch this week - will see what he can get for you and let you know next week. He is collecting this wood at his workshop soon as well:

http://saigoneer.com/saigon-development/3162-photos-hcmc-begins-to-chop-down-old-trees-on-ton-d-c-th-ng

WOW!!!!! Red Indian Mahogany and the one photo has a giant burl growth in it. I would buy almost all of that. I have more Mahogany than i know what to do with but very little Red Indian. If you could have him mill out some 6"x6"x18" pieces of stock from that i would for sure buy some. Going market price on turning blanks in RIM is $36 a blank. I would pay $42 a piece and arrange shipping. If he can cut them, please ask him to spray paint both ends of the blanks with latex paint for me so they do not crack or check during shipment. Let me know how many he can cut.

Would you be interested in any wood from Nova Scotia Canada. We have Betula Alleghaniensis or yellow birch here and a few other rare hardwoods and my parents own almost 100 acres

Things i do not buy include (unless it is burl, spalted, curled, birds eye, or highly figured)

Oak
Birch
Pine
Cedar
Maple
Hornbeam
Hemlock
Spruce
Hickory
Aspen
Alder
Ash
Basswood
Walnut
Poplar
Pine

If it is not one of those, or it is spalted, burl, curly, birds eye or other high figure, i would be interested for sure.
479  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTB] Exotic woods from around the world with Bitcoin on: November 15, 2014, 01:16:29 AM
I can get all NZ woods, but do you mind PMing me the prices you are paying

shipping is bloody expensive

Let me know what you have access to and in what quantity and i will get you pricing. Unless you are a logger with a lot of permits some of the wood i use a lot from NZ will be off limits to you, so i need to know more about what it is you can get if not yourself, from someone you know who has all the stuff needed to get it legally.

Some parts of NZ have small clusters of Narra which is a wood i love to use and does not require a permit to harvest in NZ as it is considered invasive and they have tried many times to remove it from the country. It grows harder in NZ than Asia but is ultra rare because they have been trying so hard to eradicate it.

I would also be interested in some Paulownia if you can find CLEAN well figured pieces, i would require that these be milled down to 4X4X14" pieces of stock as they hold a lot of water and shipping a log with bark still attached is not feasible. Also if you live near a coastal region i would be interested in some Pepper Tree blanks in the same size as above. I do have a regular shipping company in NZ so if you lived near the Waikato or Hamilton you could just drop them off and they would ship them and bill my account, otherwise we could work something out

Thanks
480  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTB] Exotic woods from around the world with Bitcoin on: November 14, 2014, 08:52:35 PM
can you make me a bitcoin symbol sculpture out of some fancy exotic wood blocks and gloss em up. if you can build it and make it look incredible (maybe the base to a lamp?) then i'll buy it.

I can, but i would need more specifics. I dont do complete lamps myself due to insurance regulations and all that added expense but i could make a base for one and you could purchase the "guts" and assemble the lamp portion of it yourself with the pre-drilled wholes i can make for you.

I do have to warn you my inbox on BTCtalk is filling daily with requests for custom works so depending on the size, spices and budget of your project it could impact how soon i could get it done. I never anticipated that i would get so many commissions when all i really set out to do was buy some wood. If it keeps up like this i am going to have to hire someone to make me a website and just start cranking out bitcoin pieces. Personally if it were going to be a lamp i think rather than a sculpture, having a turned than carved base would give it a better overall durability and appeal.

If you can give me the info below i can work up something more specific for you.

Budget:
Preferred colors: (i.e. whites, yellows, reds browns, oranges, purples) that helps me narrow down the wood types
How soon you want it done:

Thanks again to all of you both selling me wood and commissioning custom work.
