741  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: From nothing to something on: August 23, 2012, 12:54:00 AM
I did something like this, but I started properly mining with a single 6950 towards the end of May last year.
Actually spent the majority of my BTC on other things, but I've still got ~2.2Ghash/s worth of equipment mining (3 7970s in my main PC and a 5830 in the media centre PC under my TV  Cheesy) through a hopping proxy, which still gives me a not insubstantial BTC income. I'd have picked up some more hardware with what I've mined over the past few months but with the uncertainty surrounding ASIC introduction I've stayed away from that.

743  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How Large is BTCST exposure? on: August 23, 2012, 12:36:08 AM
How is Pirate going at returning the funds of his investors plus interest?  Anyone know if he's paying out as promised?  Two full days have elapsed since he promised to progressively make his clients whole.
There's apparently been one payout of ~100BTC, so we're almost 0.02% of the way there!...apparently.
744  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: When is this pirate drama going to end? on: August 22, 2012, 11:40:17 PM
Wait.... let me get this straight. You guys... willingly? gave your bitcoins to a Pirate, and now you want them back?

...

HAHAHAHAHA
A thousand times this.

Few bucks? Pretty small minded thinking. bitlane a vocal (and annoying) member has about $25,000 USD tied up in this. Your 20 btc is insignificant, but to assume every one complaining has so little invested is ignorant. That's double what a good number of Americans make in a year of working 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week, for 50 (or more) weeks. You are surprised that it's dominating the forums when what looks like the biggest scam in bitcoin's history is going down?

I had my entire university fund in bitcoinica for a single week, and during that week it was hacked and I haven't gotten a penny back, I made the bitcoinica investigation and then stopped mentioning it because talking about it won't get me my money back, and bitcoinica was a fully licensed financial services corporation that had a completely acceptable EULA.
Ouch.
I still don't think the intersango boys understand how many lives they affected with this whole thing.
Out of curiosity, do you plan to sue? Do you plan to turn up to the London conference?  Cheesy

Is it possible that pirate could have that many coins? If those are BS&T coins it'd also prove that no investment was taking place, as suspected.

yes, let's draw some attention to that

could be the GPUMax skim?

Could be. I am aware that for the last couple hours miners with GPUMax are being fully utilized for public work which has been increasingly rare for the last couple months.
Hours? Try days (well, near enough...)  Wink
However, GPUMax could never have mined enough to fill that address with "clean" coins. Even at several hundred gigahash you're talking a <500BTC/day
746  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Bitcoin Savings & Trust - Money Returned List (One reported). on: August 22, 2012, 09:41:02 PM
So the question remains - why is pirate paying over the odds for hashing power for his private pool, and where are the coins coming from to pay GPUMAX?

748  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Bitcoin Savings & Trust - Money Returned List (zero Mon-Tue, None reported Wed). on: August 22, 2012, 08:15:53 PM
It looks like coins are coming back !
Apparently using freshly-generated coins too in some cases, e.g. this payment http://blockchain.info/tx-index/16885882/c2d0742df8df67c0507fd270b3c262f8a0118ba3a9b91357c83a04d952d0a32d - very interesting.

Edit: not just freshly-generated coins that weren't mined by any pool that blockchain.info is aware of, but ones that were mined with a very unusual 47.5 BTC / 2.5 BTC split in the coinbase payout, which means custom software.

Edit 2: and yep, that entire payment comes from coinbase transactions paid to http://blockchain.info/address/1PSf86KnLuzM7Ris5kDhTEZwooR3p2iyfV - which represents 5+% percent of the total Bitcoin hashpower right now at a quick estimate. I have a bad feeling about this.

For me it looks like he bought this coins directly from a large miner, which makes sense to me.
It's GPUMAX.
There was a thread about this some time ago, when GPUMAX hashing power was being directed to a private pool, with 47.5BTC going to some other address for every block.
At the time, Pirate said that this private pool would be "part of the business model" of GPUMAX.

Asides from GPUMAX being a coin laundry I don't really see what use it'd be when mining to a pool under your control...

Amount expected: none of your business
Date account created: early
Type of Account: direct
Funding transaction ID: several of them, none of which will be shared

Don't forget BitcoinMAX......allegedly they have 100,000+ BTC tied up.

Is there any proof of that number?

I also have a recently created (within the past 3 weeks) bitcoinmax account and there are 133k BTC ahead of me.  There are about 70 additional accounts older than mine.

That is where I got the 100,000+ numbers

I think many people are grossly under-estimating how many coins are tied up in this thing.

"House of cards" comes to mind.

Indeed.
Back in the first week of august (two lots of 7% interest ago) I calculated that the bare minimum for exposure for just the GLBSE instruments and the PPTs on the forum was 260,000BTC - so that was ignoring all private BS&T accounts and taking low end estimates for a few others.

Also, let me draw your attention to this thread:

750  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Hey Pirate, it's Monday....WHERE ARE MY BITCOINS ? on: August 22, 2012, 09:00:59 AM
His OTC ratings might be a good place to figure out how "real" he is, also... would any of the people who claimed to trade with him over PayPal be willing to reveal the email he used? Are they real people, or part of the ruse?

That's a good call.
But, "Trendon Shavers" seems a likely figure to be pirate, and the photos we have of him (via facebook) match the one from vegas.

Could very well be fake but usually when I come up with a fake ID I don't give it a criminal record for check fraud.
751  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [208 Gh] MtRed (PPS, LP+, API, 0 FEE) Merged Mining Test LIVE on: August 22, 2012, 12:15:29 AM
Just curious due to a point that was made on 420's thread about PPS rates.  I knew that Mt. Red waited for coins to confirm for payouts, but it rose a question that I haven't been able to identify the answer to.  Does Mt. Red still pay out shares on orphaned blocks (which it should as a "Pure PPS" pool)?
Yes, orphan blocks are paid. At least that's what the OP said some time ago.

Suggesting this is very much unsustainable, which is a pity  Undecided
This pool has become the standard backup pool for my hoppers  Cheesy

Has anyone begun contacting his family, friends, associates, and ordering pizzas to raise the heat?

That is an awful suggestion. Why would anyone stoop that low ?

Y'know, if giving someone $25k of your money and then ordering them fast food is your idea of payback, I'd quite happily be your enemy  Cheesy

Black Market Drug Site 'Silk Road' Booming: $22 Million In Annual Sales
His findings: the site’s number of sellers, who offer everything from cocaine to ecstasy, has jumped from around 300 in February to more than 550. Its total sales now add up to around $1.9 million a month. And its operators generate more than $6,000 a day in commissions for themselves, compared with around $2,500 in February.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/andygreenberg/2012/08/06/black-market-drug-site-silk-road-booming-22-million-in-annual-mostly-illegal-sales/

I think this puts the argument that Pirate's business is somehow related to laundering coins for silk road to rest. Pirate's interest payments completely dwarf Silk Roads operator profit and almost rivals the combined revenue of all silk road sellers combined.

I just thought of something, I haven't seen this brought up before, but Silk Roads owner goes by the name Dread Pirate Roberts... Now, thats something to think about...
It's been discussed.
$6000 a day wouldn't have been enought to keep BS&T going.

755  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Bitcoin Savings & Trust - Money Returned List (zero Monday, none reported Tues). on: August 21, 2012, 09:55:23 PM

So at this point, although it's not yet confirmed that it's a Ponzi, the past 48hs do seem to confirm that Pirate has no moral problem with his customers jumping off a cliff due to his own lack of transparency.

Playing devil Pirate's advocate again; we dont know how much he told his customers. Remember there arent that many, and they generally seem quite confident. Its their customers customers, all the passthrough, bonds etc holders that are jumping off cliffs.

There are people selling BTCST accounts for under their face value, these people are pirate's direct customers and they have been left in the dark. Pirate is undeniably ignoring his customers' worries.
I'm actually more surprised that people are still buying BS&T accounts at all...
756  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: bitcoin will change the hashing algo and render all the BFL shit useless!! HAHA on: August 21, 2012, 09:48:22 PM
It's basically impossible to change the hashing algorithm once ASICs arrive, even if it's necessary... How on earth are you going to get half the network to switch if the vast majority of the hashing power can't?
757  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: I'm giving 100% ROI away to anyone who thinks pirate is a fraud on: August 21, 2012, 06:38:56 PM
Monday has passed and still no word, not a single peep from PIrate. The last thing he said in the chatroom was "Now back to your regularly scheduled trolling". I wonder if he's fled to cancun or something. Someone posted a link (perhaps as a joke) of an address to a live feed of a plane that was going to South America. Who knows.

Either way, I feel I haven't been fair enough to those who are wishing to use this bet as a hedge to their potential losses in Pirate and I'm raising 2 numbers:

  • amount of maximum bet - You may now bet up to 250BTC per person
  • amount of posts required - You must now be a 250+ post established member or find someone to escrow the coins for you

Cheers

Lets say you end up exposed to the tune of 10000BTC and you lose.
Doesn't it seem a bit crazy to have a bet of over a hundred grand with no method of collection asides a scammer tag?

Out of curiosity, is your deposit particularly large? I seem to remember it was 3-figures, which should be insignificant enough that he can at least meet an agreed payment schedule...

With interest it's just shy of 2500 BTC......so not the end of the world by any means.

However, I like to always get my money's worth....in everything I do.

For $25000 I'd be pretty pissed too  Wink
