I got a bit further along today. Finally got the test server from the rails directory running. My goal is to make much more progress than that tommorow. I also attempted to set up my netbook for development. It was an utter fail.

This is great news with regard to mybitcoin's merchant services! I think that will go a long way towards fueling adoption in the long run.
I still think, however, that the thing keeping bitcoin from taking off (virally) is that there is no specific use-value for bitcoin that only bitcoin can do best. It got me thinking, there is something that bitcoin has been used for all a long that we haven't actually set up beyond the forum. Payment for good information! People have been putting bitcoin addresses in their forum signatures for a long time, and good, helpful posts seem to be rewarded at last to some extent.
My strategy is not to find specific niches that would work for bitcoin really well but to create lot of mini sites for bitcoins. It can't hurt to have lot of miniservices by which users can spend their money on. This of course, contribute attraction for developers who might develop the right application that will be the viral niches that allow bitcoins to take off. Think of my strategy as a metastrategy for allowing your strategy to be viable.

https://btcex.com/Look like the Russians now have their own exchange from which to buy bitcoins for whatevercurrency they use in Russia.

After realizing how late it is, I updated to rails 3 and restart from scratch the bitpredict project directory. A disappointing start, but the key is progress.
If you can move, you will eventually get to your destination no matter how long it take. So, my goal is to alway be somewhere further along at the end of the day rather than be stuck at the beginning of the day.

Well, I am working on a prediction market. I should have some code by the end of the day.

630 bitcoins are accounted for.

I will post daily developer log of what I done for bitpredict, a bitcoin prediction market site. However, today I am too tired to work after returning home from college. I might or might not got anything done tonight. We'll see.

Have you heard anything back?

This is the same problem I've encountered with a couple of friends I've talked to about bitcoin. A lot of people don't have the economic insight to understand why bitcoins have certain intrinsic advantages over other currencies. To them it's just play money you can generate with some obscure algorithm on a computer and then convert into "real" money. At best they see it as some form of speculation or pyramid scheme (which currently is a deflating factor imho) and in the worst case they see it as some unworldly hippie thing.
Some serious thought should be put into making people understand the intrinsic benefits of bitcoins, but I'm not sure how to do that either. Most people simply don't care and just use whatever money their government wants them to use.
What kind of a nut would want a computer in their home in 1985? What did people think of a network of computers communicating with each other in 1995? I don't know what will catch-on and what will fail. Bitcoins seem to solve current problems, and are worth investigation. That, and I have 500 dollars on the line. I plan on making it succeed so I can collect my 500 dollars bet.

So, who is going to teach?

OK, to help boost bitcoin, I'll sell my PS3 and all my PS3 games for bitcoin at a reasonable rate. What is the best place for me to advertise a sale, other than just posting this forum?
Kiba, what was your luck with trying to sell gameboy games?
http://biddingpond.com ? I forgot about that. However, I have yet to figure out the shipping cost and how to do it as well, On Saturday, I think I will be able to put up an auction.

So, how and who is going to implement this?
|
|
|
Done. Now all that's left is to wait.
Sweet! Did you ask if they would post an address on their website for future bitcoin donations? I haven't asked this yet and don't want to annoy if you already asked. Nope. My email was simply about the mybitcoin account.

Another thing that would help bitcoin adoption:
python, perl, php libraries and common code for interfacing with bitcoin.
For example, Perl or Python code that verifies that "17NdbrSGoUotzeGCcMMCqnFkEvLymoou9j" is a valid bitcoin address, and "098123409813lkjasdflkjasdflk" is not, would be useful to anyone wishing to implement a bitcoin web interface.
Possible coding bounty.

I just handed the EFF details on how to access the account. Pretty soon, I won't be able to know about how much bitcoins EFF have.

Done. Now all that's left is to wait.

I just checked. We have 640 bitcoins in the account.
|
|
|
Also, Kiba, please go ahead and post some Bitcoin addresses here for the EFF MyBitcoin account so we can all donate to it.
Great news: The EFF is definitely interested in recieving Bitcoins!
It's in another thread for EFF donations. I don't have much time to do anything right now as I am in college. Also, can you please post the email message from the EFF so we know what it says or does that violate social convention.

Probably just by sending everybody's Bitcoin commodity donations to the "eff" via Bitcoinmail to: membership at eff dot org .... will introduce them to Bitcoins when they claim the donation (having to actually download the Bitcoin client app to receive the donation - and sell the Bitcoins for national currency - through one of the Bitcoin commodity exchanges if national currency might still be needed by them to conduct business in the conventional economy - alternatively they could embrace Bitcoin commodity and use Bitcoin commodity, as payment in like, if they can on there part again, reach agreement with their trading partners). https://www.eff.org/about/contactI have choosen to use mybitcoin, which are essential online bitcoin account. Very easy to use. I just need to give them the password and the username.

I think many people loose interest when they see that it is very difficult to generate bitcoins. But buying bitcoins isn't so hard, so getting them is not the problem. I think more in the lines of being able to spend them. Sure, there are some nice ways to spend them, but many things are a bit of a niche currently (relative little people have real use for it). If I have a look in the first few topics in the Marketplace, I see financial related stuff and lotteries/poker related stuff. None of which I would be interested in.
I think you'll need to express your needs and see if people are willing to offer and try to get started. However, at this point, we have too few users to facilitate much trading since there is a lack of coincidence between what you want and what resources they have. Two months is too long to realize that generating bitcoin is a waste of time, I believed. It's not a plausible hypothesis. However, this is September so school is probably a plausible hypothesis pulling bitcoiners from the community a little while. Another hypothesis is that the community has already say much about bitcoins and that we're running out of stuff to post. That's probably implausible though but I don't know how to determine this.
