241  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] Honey Caramels on: July 07, 2013, 06:48:40 PM
what does your stock look like today?  I'd like to order some... I have bees, and harvest honey, but do not go beyond that with making anything else like you do... so, I'd like to order some from you  Grin

We just finished a busy weekend with our local farmer's market.  We had a classic car show happen this weekend as well, so we are making all honey caramel flavors Monday.  I just got home from dropping a big order to a store in Salt Lake City.  That order had a few cases of honey roasted almonds, and we made extra of those, so those are on stock right now.  Lip balms and lotion bars are starting to run low, so those will be made, maybe Tuesday or Wednesday.

This week we got our first comb honey for the year.  Sold out of that, but will have a few more frames in the hives that are ready to go.

Bees wax candles are the only items we have that would take me a couple days to make.

The honey arrived today.  There was some shipping damage, which the post man was not too happy about.
I've sent you PM.

No worries.  Thank you for following up on that.
244  Economy / Goods / Re: WTB/WTT Honey Samples (Conditions inside!) on: July 01, 2013, 05:39:58 PM
No one a beekeeper or have family that's a beekeeper?

How are your British Blacks doing?

We are hoping to harvest our 1st crop of comb honey this week.  I have 3 yards in different cities (all within 10 miles of each other) that I can collect from this week and next.
And I will check with a commercial beekeeper who has bees in several different locations (WY and UT... in mountains, near roads, and on farms).

Edit:  I will also check with some friends in Florida. I have worked out there with researchers at the University and with FL state.

If you want a category added to suit your site please let me know and I will add it.

A "Food" section would be nice.

Bees Brothers have been accepting bitcoin since Jan. 2012.  Our main item we sell are honey caramels, but we also have several other items made with bee products.

heyyyyyy just wondering can we buy actual bees with bitcoins?

>>>THAT WOULD BEE COOL!!!!!!

The closest I ever came was using bitcoins to buy silver and traded the silver for some bee equipment.

Excellent.  More beekeepers using bitcoins!

I would like a gallon of the Orange Blossom Honey.

I was out in Florida several times a few years ago working on a bee project and picked up a bunch of honey then.  I'm all out of it and it has a much different taste than out here in the Intermountain West.

We will make a batch of honey caramels with some of it for bitcoiners only.

Sending you a PM.
Payment received. I'll let you know when the honey has shipped.

Thank you for your custom!

Any word yet on shipping?

We just finished "Pollinator Day" at our local market, and sold out of most of our stock.  We have a few big orders that we will be getting ready on Monday.  That means we will be making almost everything that day. Any orders coming in now until Tuesday noon, we will be able to ship out by Tuesday afternoon.

The only exception is beeswax candles.  I haven't had time to process our wax.  If anyone orders those, it will take at least a week to get those made.  The little bit of wax we do clean up, immediately goes into the beeswax lotion bars and lip balms.

Our sign at our booth that says "Bitcoin Accepted Here" is getting lots of comments from people who have heard about it, but still we haven't had anyone purchase with bitcoin at a market.
249  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Garr255/Werner - Auction shilling on: June 21, 2013, 06:33:41 PM
Did Gar255 put a gun to his head? No one forced the bidders to do anything.

Having an alt that artificially raises the bid price is similar to a secret reserve price in an auction. There's nothing inherently wrong with it except that Garr255 should have warned bidders that he might do it. I rank his actions there as "a bit shady," though he handled the fallout badly (due to inexperience, I suppose).

In any case, alts aren't against forum rules, and scammer tags are typically only given when an explicit agreement is broken. Garr255 never promised not to bid on his own auctions. He never even promised to honor the results of the auctions. Without contracts that say otherwise, auctions are only devices to assist in price negotiations.

Has anyone read the book “Defending the Undefendable” by Walter Block?
https://mises.org/store/Defending-the-Undefendable-P136.aspx

I think it is partly along those lines of libertarian thinking that Theymos has in regulating this forum and it helps to explain his comment about Gar’s auction shilling not deserving a scammer tag.  And while I have to cringe, because it is “a bit shady”, I agree with Theymos.

I think “Shilling” would be a very appropriate chapter to include in that book, so would Matthew’s bet (but I have no idea what the title of that chapter would be).

It seems, in the past, on this forum that if someone caused damage by violating a deal or contract, but made good on the contract, the scammer tag was not given or was removed.  While this auction didn’t have an explicit contract, there was an unspoken social expectation that there wouldn’t be a sock puppet increasing the price with phony bids.  With Gar paying the auction winners 5 btc, this should more than correct the financial wrong, and eliminate the call for a scammer tag.

His reputation however has taken some hits. And that is for him to rebuild and repair, which I am confident he will do.

I have had several trades and communication with Gar over the years (has it been that long already!?) all of which have caused me to increase my trust and respect for him.  I was surprised, shocked, and disappointed when this came to light.   With that said, I’m sure Gar will learn from this error and be more diligent in being honest in his future actions. I will continue to exchange with him.

In fact I might head over now and pick up a few Cognitive shares during this dip.

http://www.hiphopchessfederation.org/ updated. They stuck their Bitcoin donation option right at the front. If there are no objections to these, I'll send money out tomorrow evening.

Excellent placement of the banner!
251  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bee population dying off on: June 20, 2013, 06:45:40 PM
I don't really think this story warrants the topic title, and I see similar ones quite a bit around the internet.... When you say "population dying off" it implies that... they're dying off.  What you described here were a couple of specific instances where specific hives have experienced catastrophic loss due to local conditions.  It might sound like a scary number to say "25,000 bees" but a mature hive has 20,000-80,000 workers depending on local conditions.

Am I crazy?  If I see this title I expect to see hundreds or thousands of hives worth.

Here's the headline "Americans Dying Off"
Here's the story: "Last week, a tour bus containing the entire Smith family (48 members) careened off of an overpass, exploding in a ball of fire.  Some have attributed this catastrophic incident to dangerous chemicals applied to the road which led to the loss of control and subsequent fiery demise."

Tragic yes, accurate no.

I agree that the title was misleading, I thought it was going to be about CCD or something.

Pesticide kills are a common thing.  It often happens that an apiary with 50-100 hives gets sprayed and wipes out almost every hive.  Can be pretty devastating to the beekeeper who usually has very little recourse for restitution.

What is interesting about this article is that it was bumble bees that were dying.  Bumble bees generally have 50 individuals in a strong nest.  We have some bigger nests with observation windows in them and they sometimes get over 100 individuals in them.  So 25,000 bumble bees dying is a lot of nests.
252  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bee population dying off on: June 20, 2013, 05:29:11 PM
Looks like someone is going to get busted for not following the label laws while applicating.

Dinotefuran is pretty mean stuff on bees.  The label specifically says not to spray in the presence of bees.

Hopefully it was hot enough that the bumble bees died before bringing the chemical back to the hive.

Maybe the hives will recover despite loosing all its workers.

Ok, here is a list of charities that we have been contacted about. Please let us know if you have any objections to donating to them.

1) https://watsi.org/about

2) http://iccf-holland.org/

3) http://www.handinhand-patenschaft.de/  (Please ask them to post a Bitcoin donation option to their website, even if it's just a text Bitcoin address wit a note about acepting Bitcoin for donations)

4) http://spices.org.my/  (Note, this one is run through a church, but is not a religion-focused charity)

5) http://www.sternenhof.eu/ (helping flood victims and their animals)

6) http://harvestlots.org/

7) http://www.hiphopchessfederation.org/  (growing a future generation of nerds!)

Some of them are still working on adding a bitcoin donation option to their page. Let me know what you think. I'll let you guys discuss them for a few days before I commit, just to make sure everyone got a chance to see them.

I did a quick review of each of organizations above and thought they all looked like they are doing some good and fit the requirements for Bitcoin 100.  However, I wasn't able to find any mention of bitcoin acceptance with Hiphopchessfederation.  Maybe if I filled out their form and went to the next page...or spent a few more minutes looking for it?

It was great to meet both of you, Rassah and Edd, at the conference.  Thanks for the time and work you guys put into this.

256  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] Honey Caramels on: June 13, 2013, 03:56:10 PM
Are these the same caramels from Silk Road? It's a specific type of treat, that's why I ask. You don't see many vendors selling honey caramels. Smiley

These are not the caramels sold on Silk Road... though if government regulations and oppression increase just a little more, that might be an option for those wanting to buy and sell healthy food.

We are based out of Utah, so I seriously doubt our bees are even visiting any "special" fields.  The only "special" things about our products is that we make them ourselves and strive to keep quality the best we can.  We are a registered business, make everything in a commercial kitchen, and try to comply with the confusing and convoluted laws of the land.

Juts placed an order for some almond honey caramels for Dad for Fathers day. Thanks for the service!

Got it boxed up and ready to ship tomorrow, along with a few others that came in tonight.  I'll send you an email with the tracking number later tomorrow.

Thanks.

259  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] Honey Caramels on: June 08, 2013, 05:18:40 PM
I've been out of town this week so I'm a little late answering emails and getting orders out.
Should be caught up and have all existing orders sent out on Monday.

I plan to order the large assorted gift box in the next day or two.  Any first time bitcoin buyer discount? Smiley

This will be my first bitcoin purchase ever...exciting!

We most likely will throw in something extra. Wink

I'm interested in attending.  Not sure if I can get away that night to drive to SLC.
I'll let you know if I can.

How many do you think will be there?
