141  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 0.2 FEE!!!! ? am i missing something? on: August 06, 2014, 06:26:06 PM
This is a really unfortunate mistake... They should have sanity checks for such things in the client OP was using....
First you need to select "custom send" instead of the default, then you have to add a fee, write that fee, you end up in the review screen which you can check, and only then you click "ok send".

Sure, they could add an additional warning "wtf incredible fee are you sure", but there already are many places were you can review this, and you have to fail all of them.
142  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: i want to give 100 BTC to one user on bitcointalk. tell me why it is U. on: August 06, 2014, 04:19:55 PM
So you are claiming that the address 19QDGMRKdZ9BpDZP2Re6yaDqNQ7zN4wo1D is yours.

Prove it, move 0.14410254 BTC to any address and post the transaction.

This address has been in the top 100 richest for years.

Not an unreasonable amount or request.

~BCX~
This did not happen, if I'm not mistaken.
143  Economy / Lending / Re: Looking for a 1.2 BTC Loan for 1.5 BTC return in 8 days on: August 06, 2014, 04:11:21 PM
Alternative solution: I can lend you some space on my server, for static content only.
No scripts, no executables, no cgi, only plain static content.

You can put there some generic "I'll be back in a few days, sorry" message, and keep a static version of your site.

Interested?
144  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 0.2 FEE!!!! ? am i missing something? on: August 06, 2014, 03:37:54 PM
If you can figure out which pool mined the block they might give it back to you.  I know of a couple of instances when someone sent a huge transaction fee (much more than you did) and begged the pool and they gave it back because it was an obvious mistake.
I agree, this is by far the best route.

Begging here will only attract spite, but asking nicely (nicely!!) to the pool will likely yield results.
145  Economy / Lending / Re: Looking for a 1.2 BTC Loan for 1.5 BTC return in 8 days on: August 06, 2014, 03:34:18 PM
My pay check is to far away for this to happen
How much "far away"?
So will you actually be able to repay the loan?
Did you already send money to an exchange?

Since you supposedly already have the cash, why don't you just use some other fast method such as localbitcoins? Their commissions should be lower than what you are offering here anyway.

Because If I do not have the money before midnight tomorrow or tonight I believe my server will shut down
[...]
by then I would have lost hundreds of dollars so it would be cheaper for me to take a 1.2 BTC loan and pay back 1.5 BTC 8 days later than just leave it down. I hope you understand.
I do not, sorry.
If there were so many dollars at stake, why didn't you plan this in advance, what happened?

edit: is BTC their only payment method accepted? (hint: likely it isn't)
so why don't you just pay with a credit/debit card?

and also I would like to upgrade the server and hire a coder I already have been in contact with to start some projects on there.
This can definitely wait the few days you need for your money to reach the exchange.
This is getting shadier by the minute...
146  Economy / Lending / Re: Looking for a 1.2 BTC Loan for 1.5 BTC return in 8 days on: August 06, 2014, 03:14:20 PM
I don't feel comfortable with BTCJam, that website seems dodgy..
I'm sorry, but I have to inform you that you seem very "dodgy"...
147  Economy / Lending / Re: Looking for a 1.2 BTC Loan for 1.5 BTC return in 8 days on: August 06, 2014, 03:12:08 PM
I cannot do that as I don't have that money RIGHT NOW
And why do you need it "RIGHT NOW" (sic.), if you can just wait for your next paycheck?
148  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Argentina default, why didn't bitcoin go up more? on: August 06, 2014, 12:47:02 PM
Cyprus had nothing to do with the rally, sadly certain news sources are desperate to connect dots without supporting their arguments (or more like clickbaits) with proof.
And your source is...?
149  Economy / Securities / Re: [Havelock] Bitcoin Difficulty Derivative (BDD) on: August 06, 2014, 08:57:37 AM
Thanks for an explanation! One more question. But I can just buy B.MINE and hold to it. Do I need to buy EXCH?
You can either
- buy MINE
or
- buy EXCH, exchange it for MINE+SELL, sell SELL and keep MINE

obviously the first one is simpler, but in some strange occasion the second one might be more profitable (though I guess there already is a bot ready to do that)

Wrong.
It's Idiocy to assume a bunch of things you have no clue about.
So you come here, you ask (way) too much for your site, nobody bids, and suddenly everyone besites you is an idiot.
Interesting.

8 ) innovative proof-of-work seems GPU and ASIC resistant

Let's just quietly remove that one from the list before the post looks foolish in a few months.
+1

The whole "gpu/asic-resistance" has always been a way to let whiny kids "play miner" with their dad's hardware, since they couldn't afford to do that with Bitcoin anymore.
Any coin who picks an algo for this purpose is automatically crap to me, since it's clearly not intended for security, but to make whiny kids happy.

That being said, I'm really concerned by POW regardless of the algorithm, so I'm kind of biased against any POW coin (except Bitcoin, of course).
153  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 03, 2014, 09:04:54 PM
The stated purpose of bitcoin was to provide a method of internet payment that was fast cheap easy safe etc.. Some people thought that it was also a safe way to hide illegal payments from governments, and loved it for that perceived quality.  Those people (and presumably most readers of this thread) are now realizing that it never was.
The purpose of bitcoin is to have a decentralised currency.
If you add centralization it is no longer decentralised (!!), hence it's a meaningless crap.

A tainted-bitcoins database would only kill that use of bitcoin for good. Cashiers would surely comply and check that database if it was automatic, and/or if they could be penalized for failure to do so (if only by having their own coins listed, and hence made worthless).
It would no longer be a currency at all, since it wouldn't be fungible anymore.
154  Economy / Auctions / Re: Lucky Bitcoin Casino is being placed up for auction - Complete Working Casino on: August 03, 2014, 09:01:01 PM
AcoinL.L.C is a complete idiot, with Zero skills in Appraising a Bitcoin Casino.
So, people who doesn't throw money at you are idiots with Zero (sic.) skills?

Nice to know.
155  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 02, 2014, 09:41:09 PM
But the government could require such checks for bitcoin, since the cashier has to connect to the internet anyway in order to accept a bitcoin payment.
They can't actually do that, since either they are unsuccessful (much likely) or nobody would bother use this coin anymore, since its purpose would have been defeated (so they weren't able to control it, only to destroy it).
156  Economy / Auctions / Re: Lucky Bitcoin Casino is being placed up for auction - Complete Working Casino on: August 02, 2014, 09:38:46 PM
your starting price is too high!
And the lack of bids proves it.
157  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 02, 2014, 09:31:57 PM
I agree with smooth. I run a gambling service and this is a very practical concern to me. Some people IRL might not accept coins that come from me [...]
Your post means you agree fungibility is necessary and a coin isn't a coin if it isn't fungible.

I was attacking fools claiming it is ok not to be fungible, not people worried it might isn't.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Partly I agree with your worry, but actually... you know, there's plausible deniability: if they can't demonstrate you are associated with someone, you "should" be ok. If you aren't ok, then something is wrong at another level, and you have bigger problems anyway.
158  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 02, 2014, 09:28:02 PM
Small high frequency transactions do not need to be handled by a blockchain, they can be performed under any number of microtrust based services which already exist and which can easily be created.
Yeah, like inputs.io!

That's not a name we like reminded of.

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it"

I was thinking more like steam, iTunes, sony entertainment network, envato, etcetera Smiley

Sure, this makes sense, but they are still very small niches, surrounded by the vast main network: they wouldn't make any practical difference to the size of the real blockchain.
159  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: August 02, 2014, 08:54:45 PM
VISA-scale

Yeah, like inputs.io!

Even without any direct legal issues, fungibility may be an issue at the point of acceptance.

Would you accept bitcoins from a known drug dealer or terrorist?

I would not. I would also be reluctant to accept them from someone I didn't believe to be so careful about not doing so.

Fungibility is an essential property of any currency. If it is not fungible, it is not a currency. Following your logic, plumbers should not repair drug dealers pipes, waiters should not serve them at the restaurant, etc, because their US$ is not the same as any other US$. The issue is if you accepted currency for legal goods or services, if it is legal then there is nothing wrong with the money you've received.
+1000

Anyone who attacks fungibility – and to my dismay there's plenty of people who do that – is a clueless fool randomly blabbering about things he doesn't even try to understand.
