4801  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Help on power source to run mining rig - 480V, 60 Hz 3-Phase power on: October 18, 2016, 04:31:58 AM
Get a professional electrician to talk to you about how to split that sort of 3-phase to 220 spilt-phase (most commonly involves a transformer or three).

genset power quality at that level of genset should not be an issue.
4802  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What happens if bitcoin mining becomes subsidized with taxpayer money? on: October 18, 2016, 04:28:03 AM

Chances of government paying for someone to mine bitcoin... very very small. I don't see it happening personally but it's a much different thing then farming.

I'd say "zero" myself with the VERY long shot exception of the Chinese government.
4803  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience is now dabbling with 16nm ASICs for new designs on: October 18, 2016, 04:21:59 AM
*perk* pods.

And after the pods come .... THE MINERS!

4804  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Folding at Home/Curecoin Chrome Tab Browser Re-installation on: October 18, 2016, 04:18:43 AM
The Crome F@H app only used your CPU to fold with - it doesn't even look at a GPU even when present.

Also, doing ANYTHING 24/7 on a laptop is a good way to make it overheat and die, not a good idea.

4805  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: most potential Miner for making money. on: October 18, 2016, 04:16:28 AM
The Baikal has a few reviews around, it appears to be legitimate.

There is the question of "will it ever ROI" as usual though, given the fairly rapid increase in X11-based coin difficulties since it and the other 2 X11-capable ASIC were introduced.

4806  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: What is the average life of a mining rig? on: October 18, 2016, 04:05:37 AM
Got some 280x's still going for almost 3 years 24/7 temp 80 degrees 70% fan. Fans did stiffen up after about 2 years... I just spray some wd40 in them carefully when it happens and they are good as new again!

Ps. Wd40 is not recommended I belive machine oil is but... I've not had any problems so far... just made sure I didn't use too much so it would leak or get it on the gpu board.

WD is not good for high temperature operation. You need some grease like those used in the bike or car.

Grease is too thick. Standard motor oil works pretty well though, and is designed to handle MUCH higher temperatures than any computer (in working condition) will ever see.

On the other hand, any fan in bad enough shape to NEED to be relubricated isn't very long for this world as a working item. Relube is an EMERGENCY SHORT TERM measure intended to get you by 'till you can REPLACE the bad fan with a good new fan.

Avoid sleeve bearing fans (this SPECIFICALLY includes stuff like "rifle" "hydro" "permalube" etc) - they do NOT live up to their claimed MTBF due to failure in the seals intended to keep the lube in, and VERY rarely last even a year in 24/7 high-temp environments.
Stick with ball bearing - which can run for YEARS with no lube at all if you keep the dust and grime out of the bearings.

This is why I generally stick with Sapphire or Gigabyte cards - they come with Ball Bearing fans across the board AFAIK.
(Might be true for some other brands, definitely NOT true for HIS).

compressor oil is better, the oil that is used in car aircon compressor, it is not as thick as motor oil. got my 280x's with 90mm high speed fans zip tied to them..those fans are lubed with compressor oil, and i sealed them with a black sticky tar/asphalt like stuff i bought at an aircon/refrigeration shop..those fans are doing really well, summer has passed and they have not given up and no oil leaks.

regarding HIS, i just bought a couple of this RX 480 IceQ X2 Roaring OC 8GB, didn't know about their fans being inferior, got samsung memory though.

THe HIS Ice-Q models with a blower are ball bearing and tend to last.
HIS has a bad habit of using sleeve bearing fans on non-blower models though from what little I've seen of them - might depend on the specific model though.
4807  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: So, only one Bitcoin miner on market right now. on: October 18, 2016, 03:59:41 AM
800/900 might not be a shock for an Avalon 7 - if they do the same thing as they did on the Avalon 6 and make it a somewhat smaller capability miner vs. the same gen Antminer.

6TH/600 watt ballpark and at least as quiet as the A6 for $800-$900 would sell a LOT of Avalon 7 units even though it would be somewhat higher on a $/TH basis vs the S9.

You also have to take into account the build quality of the Avalon gear over the Bitmain gear.

I did - as well as the "I hate BitMain" crowd.

4808  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]CureCoin - Protein Folding Research based Proof of Work on: October 18, 2016, 03:52:37 AM

It also appears that curecoin's morale is higher than anticipated, I was expecting the price to dump much harder given all the new folders coming in..

Most folders are smart. They anticipate that with the future release of CC2.0 which is probably going to be the most secure crypto + the SigmaX bonus, the value of Curecoin might skyrocket, so they keep it.

I know this might not be a speculation spread. And I'm not trying to create FUD. But it appears that I was correct. The new folders want to sell, and there isn't the demand to support them.

The only thing that can raise this price is the CC2 release by the team, or a kamikaze whale (which will only repeat as a vicious cycle until the CC2 release), or some ridiculous slew of merchant acceptance.

Someone needs to talk Bill Gates into having his foundation buy a $milllion or more CureCoin a month.
They could possibly write it off as a tax-deductable contrabution to folding research - I'm SURE he's got some good lawyers to make the argument stand up.

4810  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: A4 Dominator - Pre-Order Group Buy - 260mh, roughly 1000w, $1800 + shipping on: October 18, 2016, 03:06:09 AM
Interested but need more info.

if these things will not come with PSU's will they allow regular ATX PSU's to be used or will it need to be specially made PSU's like the A2 used?

The A2 did not NEED a special PSU - I've got 2 of them running with Seasonic X-1250 standard ATX power supplies, one that came from Zoomhash with a 1300 watt gold PS in it that I don't remember the brand of  and other folks have reported transplanting other standard ATX power supplies into them when the "included" PS died.
They would WORK with an EVGA 1300 G2 but those didn't fit into the case physically without major "too cramped" and "pinch the wires" issues.

X1250 is pretty close to SILENT running a A2 110Mhs Terminator at the max turbo mode and appx. 1200 watts draw from the wall - definitely can't hear it over the Deltas in the miner unless you put your ear RIGHT at the fan of the Seasonic.

I do note that Innosilicon is SPECIFYING a 1000 watt power supply, while the A2s shipped stock with an 1100, which strongly implies that the A4 is lower power usage all-up than the A2.

Using a 1600 watt PS should be a TOTAL WASTE of capasity and money (unless you already have it sitting around, of course).
4811  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Spondoolies SP30 on: October 14, 2016, 08:33:37 PM
While the SP30 was a good and efficient miner FOR IT'S DAY, at this point it's a money-LOSER unless your electricity is free or *maybe* if you're paying less than 3c/KWH you might eek out a SMALL profit *IF* it has the same configurability as the SP20E did and you turn the voltage to the ASIC down as far as it will go to maximise EFFICIENCY.

As of right now, it is 2 full generations BEHIND the "greater efficiency through technology improvements" ASIC curve for Bitcoin miners.

4812  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: s9 batch 17 (and 16?) changes on: October 14, 2016, 08:27:03 PM
Just got a s9 batch-17 and... Bitmain has changed the firmware.

Looks like changing the frequency may be gone. There is no longer a GUI option to change it. On startup, the firmware goes through several checks per-board and sets the best freq and possibly Vcore as well per-board. When all is done, the boards report different frequencies. This could turn out to be rather -- interesting.

How Spondoolies-ish - though without the voltage adjust feature from the SP20....

4813  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Does this USB minergood for altcoin mining? on: October 14, 2016, 08:22:54 PM
There are ASIC for X11 - the Baikal is the highest efficiency one - but like ANY ASIC, they can only be used on the specific algorythm(s) they are designed to be used on.

That is the tradeoff of CPU and GPU in mining - higher flexability but less efficient.

4814  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: I won 2 video cards in auction. How much will they hash for??? on: October 14, 2016, 08:17:45 PM
Litecoin is Scrypt - you won't see enough earnings to pay squat out of ANY GPU-based rig due to the widespread deployment of ASIC devices for the last 3-4 years.

ETH  - not sure if your HD 6950 can even DO ETH, worth trying perhaps if it as 2GB or more RAM on it but I suspect the power consumption is going to rival the mining income on that old of a card, unless your power cost is VERY VERY cheap - the "this is only card in the machine" aspect makes that worse.

Don't know of any list, but I've yet to see any PoS coin match the return of most BONDS, much less a good high-dividend stock.

Highest I can remember seeing was about 1.5% per YEAR.

Will gladly accept references to any PoS coin that offers a significant return.

Forget ETH with a CPU. GPUs dominate.

XMR perhaps.

The "cash in office" refusal isn't all that uncommon. Try doing that with Bitmain, or Zoomhash, or Innosilicon, among other reputable folks selling miners.

No Paypal is no big deal - Paypal is a RIPOFF.

No Credit Card OR Bank Transfer is yet another BIG RED WARNING SIGN, especially when they try to link it to a "confidentiality policy".
Yep, it's hard to keep their SCAM ARTIST confidentiality when there is a credit card or bank transfer trail to follow.

Let us make it very clear, at the moment, all units are under tight control from Innosilicon due to lack of ASIC supply so only Innosilicon order enjoys higher delivery priority period. Any promise from non-Innosilicon sources on lower price or shorter lead time should not be trusted. Time is everything.

What about the "investors" you were looking for during the early days announments period for the A4?

How many of those did you end up with, and when are they going to get their share of the units / chips in accordance with the stated investment terms?

To the dogjunior - hint, MOST miners that have ever been released had a *30* day guarentee, often with some major limitations.
This is, UNFORTUNATELY, not out of line or uncommon in the industry.

The difference is that Innosilicon has made tons of A1 and A2 miners and chips that have proven to have a ROCK SOLID reliability record, KNC made trash that frequently died for no reason at the chip level and had major design flaws at the miner level that caused a lot more issues.

Not even CLOSE to "another KNC".
