I've implemented a new policy where we require bank transfers to include the message "For buying Bitcoins".

Smart.

Unfortunately like the three card monty players you see in the summer time in any major metropolitan area, there will always be easy victims.

Not necessarily, people can also learn from other people's mistakes.
763  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: I entered the police station as a suspect. When I left the officer loved Bitcoin on: January 09, 2013, 05:53:53 PM
It most certainly requires a huge change of mindset, and this could be the greatest challenge Bitcoin will face with regards to mass adoption.

I call BS on this. People generally already know how to handle cash, there's no reason they couldn't quickly adopt all those same principles to handling bitcoins.
764  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gobry's Forbes article and Bitcoin as Fiat on: January 09, 2013, 04:55:10 PM
Reading.. will update!

EDIT: Excellent and as usually spot on. Sophistry pisses me off as well and it makes me feel very good when there's someone out there tirelessly pointing it out! Keep it up Erik.

Mike has some good points but there is one fundamental difference with Bitcoin.  It can't be reversed, it can't be frozen, it can't be suspended.

Yes. That's great for the merchant. Less great for the gullible victim.

Gullible being the operative word.

Someone tell me what mechanism is in place so people don't get scammed in the street using cash? Oh that's right, THERE ISN'T ONE, besides common sense. The problem, Mike, is that this the issue of fraud can't be solved by making it impossible because you can't make it impossible, not even if you track everything and everyone. The only way to solve it is for people to LEARN FROM THEIR MISTAKES AND STOP REPEATING THEM.

Oh someone told you to send money to some place and expect and iPhone and you didn't check their credibility or used an escrow? Well too bad, lesson learned.

But naturally the nanny state tries to use this problem as an excuse to further oppress people under the pretense of providing tools(the use of violence) that make fraud impossible.  Roll Eyes
766  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do we change people's mentality about Bitcoin on: January 09, 2013, 03:23:56 PM
It's real simple. Get them to try it.

Every time I use Bitcoin I'm just astonished how simple and easy handling my money online it makes.
767  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New Megaupload [Coming 20 January] no word on bitcoin? on: January 09, 2013, 02:33:48 PM
If Bitcoin was a private business what do you think the manager would think about such a suggestion even if it is a large market.

Luckily Bitcoin is not a private business.  Roll Eyes
768  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Conspiracy Theory and ASICs on: January 09, 2013, 02:32:05 PM
Countdown till thread move to speculation forum.  Why is there no conspiracy theory forum?

upvoted

There really aren't that many conspiracy threads created that would warrant such a section IMO plus I'd hate to see creating such a section actually promote more stupidity like that.

"Bitcoin. Because the government says it's neat."

 Hahahahaha  Grin

Damn, all this time I've been using it to improve my life and just now I find out it's 'unpractical', that really sucks.

I just bought something from bitcoinstore.com with supreme ease, sucks that I didn't know it was 'unpractical' before I did so as well!

What other requirements are there, if any? And why might they be needed? Smiley

You are misinformed about what capitalism is.

Pure capitalism is absolute freedom coupled with respect for rational property ownership. Consequently those are also the only two prerequisites you need for capitalism.

(definition of rational property ownership: ownership based in first principles supported with reason and not some illusion supported with violence)

That doesn't make sense. If the concept of property ownership is rational, presumably there's some rational cause for it? I'm prepared to accept that property ownership might be irrational, e.g.: it's axiomatic and it "just is" or "it got made up because it's inherently true", but that's like saying that god "just is". No-one (in this thread or any of the other discussions I've seen) has ever presented a rationale for where the concept logically comes from.

Would your confusion be lifted if I substituted rational with logical? English is not my native language and I perhaps mistakenly treat those two as synonyms.
772  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What are the minimum prerequisites for Capitalism to be possible? on: January 08, 2013, 12:01:34 PM
For the sake of argument, let's assume that human beings are like programmable Lemmings that don't really know anything. They've recently climbed down from the trees and are faced with resource scarcity for the first time ever. Thus, Capitalism does not already exist, it needs to be somehow created... If people want it to exist, that is.

I guess "resource scarcity" might be one prerequisite. If everything is abundant and easily available, there's no real need for trade, is there?

And I guess the idea of Capitalism and wanting Capitalism to exist might be other requirements. The humans might proclaim in Modern English: "hey, let's trade stuff!"

775  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Freedom is ... on: January 05, 2013, 08:08:36 PM
It's a bad idea because you might hurt someone. But if you're a sicko, it's also a bad idea because these men in blue costumes will hurt you to stop you.

Not creepy.

That's meaningless because those who know they may hurt others and know that hurting others is wrong wont do it, only those who don't know that or don't know they might hurt others will do it therefor it really is just a bad idea because others will hurt you.
776  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Freedom is ... on: January 05, 2013, 08:01:10 PM
Quite scary that the threat of harm against them is what would stop them from randomly firing a gun in public, not that they might hit an innocent.  Scary.

You merely need to look outside to see all the gory evidence of people doing horrendous things to other people simply because they know they are untouchable. I never said it would take a threat of being hurt to stop me personally from endangering others because I actually care about other people but unfortunately not all people do and you can bet your life nothing other than the threat of violence will stop those kind of people.

And by demanding laws and a police force to enforce them you implicitly agree with me!

The only difference between my view and yours is that I want to reserve my freedom to protect myself. I don't need a police force and their rules and I don't agree to be a subject to their rules without my explicit consent. And I don't consent.
777  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Freedom is ... on: January 05, 2013, 07:55:11 PM
And you think you're smart enough to live without any government... Roll Eyes

I am, but I have my doubts about Dalkore.

I did not misread anything, trying reading again.

lets try that again:
This is why it's a bad idea:
because others might think their lives are in danger

And this is what happens when you act on that bad idea:
they'll hurt you to stop you.

Ok, your discredited as well.  I am done with this, I feel comfortable that Myrkul and Hazek's lack of common sense on something so basic is proof enough that you do not have the capacity to setup AnCap or any other system in a manner that would be beneficial and safe for the people in it.  I am serious.  I'll just let your comments on this stand and people and judge them all they want.

Me personally, have enough common sense and compassion to know I would not randomly discharge a firearm in public because I would not want to hurt someone, not because someone might hurt me.

So let me get this straight: You think that to solve a problem that actually exists of people doing stupid shit and endangering others is best solved by them deciding not to do it because they might hurt someone and if they still decide to do it there should be words on a piece of paper that tell them not to do it?

Can you not see the idiocy of this?

And lets not forget that you indirectly hold the exact same position. You want those words on a piece of paper and men in blue costumes with guns to enforce them which also boils down to "don't do it or these men in blue costumes will hurt you" and not some magical utopian "don't do it cause you might hurt someone".

And damn straight this is selfish, how could it not be when your mere existence is selfish if you are honest with yourself.
778  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Freedom is ... on: January 05, 2013, 02:29:31 PM
You want to tell me what good a speeding ticket does the person who is harmed as a result of a driver speeding? (Assuming anyone is actually harmed... and if not, who gives a fuck?)

Victimless crimes FTW.

It is not a victimless crime.  I could shoot a gun in public, randomly waving it about, and not hit a single person, but it's still a bad idea because the CHANCE of hurting another person was increased due to my actions.  The fact that I didn't actually hit anybody doesn't change anything.

You've got it all wrong. It's not a bad idea because you might hurt someone, it's a bad idea because others might think their lives are in danger and they'll hurt you to stop you. Same goes for speeding.
779  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info - Bitcoin Block explorer & Currency Statistics on: January 05, 2013, 09:21:49 AM
In the Send Money menu, any field where an amount of bitcoins can be entered, please make these fields bigger so we can see at least 13 digits. Right now it's really annoying how I can only see around 3 or 4 while my amount is typically accurate down to a satoshi which means at least 9 digits..

I have doubled the width of the value field on the custom send form and added an extra 20px to the quick send form. (Changes will show the when the next update is deployed).

Also when sending anonymous please give us the option to specify from which addresses we want to send the coins like we can under "Custom", and change it in both places to give us an option to select which address to spend from first if the amount is less than what the multiple selected addresses contain. (oh and show a tip that one can select more addresses by holding down ctrl)

This makes sense. However It might be easier to add a checkbox to the custom send form to make the transaction anonymous rather than duplicating the form.

One more is for Import/export, where you can click paper wallet and it displays the paper wallet for all your addresses and their private keys.. a warning would be nice that it's about to do that.

Can do.

And one final suggestion: for entering the second password when it opens up the keyboard, wouldn't it make sense to disable the ability to just type the password and also always display the keys at random so a mouse or keyboard tracking malware can't get the password?

I think this should be left to the user to decide rather than forcing a particular way. My second password would take a while to type using the onscreen keyboard I might be tempted just to disable it instead if it was an inconvenience.

Thanks for the suggestions.

And thank you for implementing them! You are one hell of a builder, blockchain.info is becoming quite the masterpiece.

BTW I noticed one more thing.. "My transactions" doesn't correctly display my history. I'm not sure about this but it seems like it shows only those tx that are associated with addresses that I didn't archive. Not only that but also for instance I see a tx that says I received x btc when the truth is I sent y btc from another address that I have now deleted entirely and x was merely the change that went back to my wallet to a brand new address..

If you can't fix this because obviously you don't know which addresses are in my wallet, maybe you could clarify this somewhere on the my transactions page where instead of "Transactions Summary of your recent transactions" it could say something like "Transactions Recent activity on your active addresses" or just scratch "My transactions" and change it to "Recent activity" and scratch "Transactions" and change it "Address activity"

3.  At this point, most children and most schools.  If they change, they are still getting the same type of schooling so there is not escape unless you have money for a private boarding school.  Most parents are two busy running around to make one or two incomes provide for their family to even be that involved with their childs schooling.  Its tough out there.

Why do you continually point at the failures of the current system in an attempt to refute the one we advocate?

I mean seriously, that's my main beef with your posts too.
