tldr; very good idea, some poor execution (DEVelopment) EDIT yes the aution site does look good

Devcoin  - an ethical cryptocurrency

The purpose of the devcoin is to give money to open source developers for their work in as fair a manner as possible.

Devcoin takes a different approach. Only 10% of newly created Devcoins (DVC) are paid out to miners, through merged mining alongside Bitcoin (meaning that people can mine both Bitcoin and Devcoin on the same machine, at the same time). This is sufficient to secure the network, but leaves 90% of newly minted coins left over, which can then be given out for free to open source developers—and also creative commons media producers.

Payouts and bounties

Newly created coins are paid out in the form of bounties, designed to encourage the development of a wide range of open source projects from new software, to hardware products such as new forms of 3D printer. There are even tentative future plans to finance a bounty for the development of a single seater open source spacecraft capable of exiting and re-entering the earth's atmosphere! Developers can also earn DVC through the Devcoin and Bitcoin share lists, which reward active open source developers within the cryptocurrency community.

New web services are also under development which will allow anybody to create or to help fund bounties for new projects.

Writers can also earn Devcoins by contributing articles to the Devtome wiki. All work submitted to Devtome is published under a Creative Commons license. Quality is maintained through a ratings system, and writers' compensation is calculated according to their quality rating and the number of words published.

Earned Devcoins can then be spent at a small but growing range of online retailers, or changed for other currencies through an exchange.

Licenses for programming and hardware which qualify for devcoins are the AGPL, Apache, BSD, GPL, LGPL, MIT, public domain, and unlicense. Web code must be licensed under the AGPL, to close the web services loop hole, it could also be dual licensed.

The most challenging thing for many crypto currencies, is finding wider acceptance outside the existing crypto community and actually getting people to engage with the coin.

Devcoin addresses this challenge by providing support for the development of Open Source projects.
By supporting Devcoin projects and promotion directly through bounties and administration shares,
Devcoin enlists skills and talents to the Devcoin cause.

projects include the creation of the

tldr;
free to collaborate, free to create

tldr;
pretty picture, nothing there

The open source way is...

Open exchange

We can learn more from each other when information is open. A free exchange of ideas is critical to creating an environment where people are allowed to learn and use existing information toward creating new ideas.

Participation

When we are free to collaborate, we create. We can solve problems that no one person may be able to solve on their own.

Rapid prototyping

Rapid prototypes can lead to rapid failures, but that leads to better solutions found faster. When you're free to experiment, you can look at problems in new ways and look for answers in new places. You can learn by doing.

Meritocracy

In a meritocracy, the best ideas win. In a meritocracy, everyone has access to the same information. Successful work determines which projects rise and gather effort from the community.

Community

Communities are formed around a common purpose. They bring together diverse ideas and share work. Together, a global community can create beyond the capabilities of any one individual. It multiplies effort and shares the work. Together, we can do more.

Nautiluscoin Ocoin Stabilization Fund:

Ocoin  Trading and Stabilization Operations

One percent of Nautiluscoin Ocoin was purchased on the open market and is used to establish the Ocoin Stabilization Fund (OSSF).

The OSSF will actively make a market to ensure a stable growth pattern.

The goal of the OSSF is to reduce price volatility while providing steady price appreciation.

By allowing for price appreciation, the OSSF will combat the effects of inflation on purchasing power.

Explained

currency as a commodity that should compete for acceptance.
competition creates the strongest currency

use either a currency peg system or daily band.

However, as we have seen countless times these systems are flawed. Once the market realizes the entity responsible for maintaining the peg is under-capitalized people abandon the currency. For a real life example we need not look any further than the breaking of the Bank of England. - it can be overwhelmed.

A Real Life Example

The creation of the Get OSC shirts is a real life example of why a stable currency is needed.  Between production and shipping the shirts will cost around $18-20 -charging 2000 OSC for the shirts, which at current exchange rates is about $18.  If miners decide to sell and the rate drops to 0.0001 BTC then value 2000 OSC drops to $9, leaving loss of $11 per shirt.

O Coin Multi-Pool

multi-pool has a one primaray goal:

Increasing the value by mining the most profitable alt-coins and exchanging them against O Coins.

O coins will be paid out to the miners of the multi-pool.

My vision for OSC is a fast secure, online currency recognized by reputable online vendors as the leading choice for online payments while maintaining transaction speeds that are convenient enough to facilitate every day use for in person transactions.

Services are coming for OSC that i hope will entice atleast one or two vendors to adopt OSC as an acceptable form of payment, but it seems like an Exchange could facilitate the rise necessary for vendors to accept OSC for payments.

I propose to sit on this for 3 months until 8-8-2014, and then launch a community fork.  It ought not be a hostile takeover.  We computer literates are accustomed to abandonware.  Cryptocurrencies minimize authority in favor of community.  The coin itself owns no intellectual property.  We ought to make peace with the owners of the most appealing and most related intellectual property.

We may not need to act; there is no reason other than your feelings that the accepted devs must comment every day, week, or even month.  The book goes on even after the author perishes.  Some works are reborn by the hand of a new editor from a later generation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraud

Quote
Fraud is a deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain (adjectival form fraudulent; to defraud is the verb).[1] As a legal construct, fraud is both a civil wrong (i.e., a fraud victim may sue the fraud perpetrator to avoid the fraud and/or recover monetary compensation) and a criminal wrong (i.e., a fraud perpetrator may be prosecuted and imprisoned by governmental authorities). Defrauding people or organizations of money or valuables is the usual purpose of fraud, but it sometimes instead involves obtaining benefits without actually depriving anyone of money or valuables, such as obtaining a drivers license by way of false statements made in an application for the same.

Exactly. The more I think on it the more I think this coin should be left to disintegrate. I would not be interested in supporting a coin with such a negative beginning. An outright rebrand and rerelease would need to be done to cut all ties with the original devs.

Monetary Base

The Monetary Base of a currency is the total number of units of a currency that are in existence. The monetary base can expand or contract. Expansion happens through mining and minting, while contraction occurs if a wallet is permanently lost, or by long term cold storage.

Market Fundamentals

The cryptographic currency market can naturally be seen as part of the greater foreign exchange market which includes all  fiat currencies, stocks, bonds, and commodity contracts.

Market Capitalization can simply be seen as the total amount of capital that has been invested into a currency.  Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying the unit price by the number of units.  From an investment point of view, market capitalization is a measure of popularity but not necessarily profitability.  Investors are primarily concerned with the unit price because this is the direct value of what they hold. If the capital inflow is directly balancing against the expansion of the monetary base (paying the maintenance cost) we will see an increase in market capitalization over time, without an increase in unit price.

Capital flows can be understood when we realize that there are many different reasons to hold a crypto-currency.

OSC can be held to spend/donate, held to save value/store of wealth, held to invest in the concept/enterprise, and used to move funds from one person, place, or market to another.

Each of these actions has an implied positive effect on the market capitalization. But can OSC fill all roles?

No one crypto-currency cannot fill all roles, perfectly.

We must look at the ideal fundamentals for each role.

A store of wealth currency  must have a low inflation rate to preserve capital and reduce volatility, and can encourage holding by providing interest.

A market currency must encourage spending by inflating to match the size of its expanding economy as more participants hold to spend.

A market currency should have a high inflation rate to encourage liquidity and high volume access to many different markets.

An equity currency should be undervalued and have growth potential.  Plus a means to pay dividends to holders.

A transmission currency must have liquidity and high volume in many global locations/exchanges and converted with ease from crypto to fiat.

8059  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [OSC] opensource coin -- visions, goals, and words of inspiration on: May 16, 2014, 10:07:06 AM
As more people learn about the utility crypto, rising demand will come from community members who are interested in either storing wealth, or investing to profit from such demand.

This new phase which leaves volatile inflation behind can be called the capitalization phase. During this phase of the OSC’s lifecycle there will be many opportunities for skilled investors to provide liquidity where the price rises too quickly, and to provide demand when a low price does not correctly reflect its potential.

The fundamental shift that drives this capitalization will be a demand for real crypto-currencies which represent an honest and fair medium of exchange PLUS wealth storage.

PLUS a coin which creates a new economy and new industry. Open Source tools and platforms and Tech support for such technologies.

A reliable store of wealth is a necessary part of a healthy crypto-ecosystem and we will see the demand rise as markets shift from the legacy debt-based economy to a fair and open economy enabled by these OPEN technologies.

As  the crypto-ecosystem continues to mature, trust is built amongst the community attracting the attention of larger holders of capital.

This general progression may go from hobbyists, miners, and small investors, to small business, large businesses, multinational corporations, financial institutions, and sovereign entities. There are no distinct lines that are crossed but each group influences aggregate demand throughout the capitalization phase.

Investors provide liquidity as the new demand is realized. This process helps to stabilize the overall price trajectory as capitalization continues through a changing demand profile.

The greater the trust in Open Source’s ability to store wealth, the more stable its value measured against other commodities becomes. The capitalization phase will eventually give way to the long term store of wealth phase in which Open Source may gain recognition as a safe haven asset.
