Eligius' primary bitcoind is 0.6.0

Applause for the whole forum.

This was handled awesomely.
2423  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Alert: chain fork caused by pre-0.8 clients dealing badly with large blocks on: March 12, 2013, 09:16:04 AM

OK, so 25 blocks got orphaned, that's 25 times 25 BTC = 625BTC (or approx $29K at the time of the event) that miners worked hard for, and did not get paid for.
The miners on 0.8 did not have to switch back to 0.7, but they did so anyways, "for the greater good".

Are we going to compensate them in any way?
(Of course not, there is a limit to our willingness to cooperate. But I though it should still be mentioned.)

Disclaimer, I am a (minor) miner, but I only mine a few bit cents per day and mostly on Eligius so if I lost anything, it is not much.

Those 625 BTC seem like just a few people should've got them.
Divide those 625 by, let's say, 500 miners and see. It's actually not a lot.

If you were on Eligius, you didn't lose anything because Eligius is on 0.6.0 mainly.

Thread should be closed.

They'll pay out. Maybe it's because of the fuss with the blockchain.
2426  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Alert: chain fork caused by pre-0.8 clients dealing badly with large blocks on: March 12, 2013, 08:12:30 AM
Gentlemen, you just watched finance in the 21st century.

*complete transparency
*community driven
*solution driven
*results

Bitcoin just gained a lot more confidence.

Bitcoin stays protected. Nothing could actually happen. If an attack was made, the algorithm would be changed.
If something like this happens, it fixes.
2427  Other / Off-topic / Re: Is one of the devs (Luke-Jr) an enemy of Bitcoin ? on: March 12, 2013, 06:26:06 AM
I'm just waiting for you to accuse him because of the fork Grin
2428  Other / Off-topic / Re: vote: did satoshidice cause the meltdown? on: March 12, 2013, 06:23:26 AM
Yes, SD actually helped, but that doesn't mean we should all start playing and fill up the blockchain, OK?
2429  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin emergency alert system? on: March 12, 2013, 06:19:40 AM

2430  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Alert: chain fork caused by pre-0.8 clients dealing badly with large blocks on: March 12, 2013, 06:16:54 AM
Come on... Stop panicking. It's a okay.
2431  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: When we hit 21million and all the miners leave, who will confirm transactions? on: March 12, 2013, 06:09:02 AM
But the transaction fees are practically nothing, how will this validate the massive energy requirement need to validate a transaction? And dont transactions require more resources to validate as the blockchain grows longer?

Basically, lower difficulty.

I will also keep mining after the 21M limit.

Yes, I plan to be alive when we hit it Cheesy
2432  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: The pool Eligius is behaving strangely on: March 12, 2013, 06:06:53 AM
Eligius gives out a payout of 25 BTC each time a block is found by the pool. Everything that's over that 25 BTC (tx fees) funds the server.

Something funny going on with the pool's web site.  The charts and tables are all empty.

Just a small bug. It's been fixed.
2434  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: The pool Eligius is behaving strangely on: March 11, 2013, 05:21:48 PM
I don't understand... What's the problem?

2436  Economy / Economics / Re: Why use rewards instead of starting with 1 BTC? on: March 08, 2013, 05:50:43 PM
Just not good enough. Bitcoin will also reach 21M and there will be no more coins.

This system is way better.

Interesting idea though...
