i runned my masternodes on a vps since now but i wanted to try to run them on a raspberry. i builded the wallet and started but it doesn't sync at all. (I'm very noob with the permission stuff on unix systems) I placed the 8bitd in '/bin' and the chain in '/root/.8bit' and in the terminal this:
# sudo -i
....pw...
# 8bitd
start but not sync... (the firewall is off), any help?

What does the log say?  It is in .8bit folder.

Also ..
Suggest to put the 8bit folder in the user's home folder (not in /bin)   =>   /root/8bit
Keep the .8but folder in the user's home folder.   =>   /root/.8bit

from security perspective,
Best way is not to use root at all, but use a dedicated normal users. But it would work with root too. Up to you.

There is an endless list of 'ProcessBlock: ORPHAN BLOCK 751, prev=a3b7d2..ecc' Ever the same block number
The zip of the chain that i used, works on the vps but not on the raspberry.

If the numbers increase, it is working but there are so many blocks that have to be processed and the chain is "funky" on certain blocks.

You just have to wait.  Do note that the raspberry is very slow (much slower than the VPC) for that kind of purpose so it would take some time.
First the raspb does not have very fast cpu (which is needed) and does not have enough RAM which is also needed.  At some point it may even crash with out of memory errors if you have not setup a large SWAP on the OS.

so wait......or get the copy of the synced chain from the VPC if you still have access and start from there.

(The number of block is ever the same)
Ok thanks for the help I'll wait if something change...
Another thing, what do you suggest between raspbian and Ubuntu MATE 16.04? (these are the latest official dist on the site of raspberry)

Most important thing from my perspective is that more people should stake & run masternodes, this will improve the distribution and network security. Having whales on board is good from price perspective, but with insecure network this price will quickly fall.

Question about this:

Suppose someone runs a few mns and 1 staking wallet. Is the network more secure as the amount of 8bit increases in that staking wallet, or is it simply based on whether a staking wallet is running/not?

ie is a staking wallet with 10 8bit in it as healthy for the network as a staking wallet with 10K 8bit, or is volume significant in this regard?

I don't think this wallet will work on Raspberry. Even if it starts to sync, you would be stuck on some other block, and basically your sync will progress slower than the chain moves forward, so you would never sync completely.

Raspberry RAM is too small for this chain, and having big swapfile will make things even worse - as swapping will be very slow on SD card and will eventually kill your card too.

I tried to run it on Orange Pi (its SBC similar to Raspberry), and it actually run for some time and synced, but it was not sustainable and was lagging behind as soon as it gets to 'funky' blocks. So I just stopped it not to waste time and hardware Smiley

Hopefully the new chain (guys, thats not just new wallet expected, but is a whole new blickchain on new codebase!!), will run lighter.
I will definitely miss the old (currently existing) 8bit chain though  Grin It is fun to use Smiley

would there hypothetically be a way to run multiple mns over tor in such a manner as each node is assigned a different ip, even though on same system?

I've rethunked my initial statement about the new mns requiring more 8bit to run than 112 (which is current amount). I have to say I kind of dig having a lot of mns running at once it makes things interesting... how many will each mn require in new release? If it goes up to 1000 or something I only can run 1 :-S    also, Will new 8bitd require 500 mb RAM still :-) ? That would be cool because I'm overflowing with it at this point.

This is still open question (current proposal of collateral is 1024 coins). There are two concurrent objectives:
- security: cheap masternode means people will not stake what introduces a security issue for the network
- fair distribution: expensive masternodes means only small group of people will collect great rewards

However, it can be also balanced using block reward and MN/stake reward ratio (block reward - current proposal 1 coin [current value: 1.2], MN reward - 0.80 [current value: 0.88]). As we can see, inflation will be slightly reduced, though MN will be still much more profitable than staking. This effect is currently mitigated because of no MN payment enforcement, however, with a new code base those payments will be enforced and MN profitability will be stunning. What is not cool from network security perspective. Therefore - I keep this topic open and and I am looking forward for your (not only r8st) feedback.

Some comparisons that perhaps are relevant (networks running well):

PIVX -  1440 PIVX per day inflation   :  90% block rewards seesaw algorithm  stakers/masternodes   :   10% developers

Transfercoin -  9% inflation rate in coins   :   50% stakers   :   50% masternodes

Both these networks have had reasonable stability.   The ratio of stakers to masternodes seems to balance organically as the networks grow.

For 8Bit, if MN rewards are high (~80% of block reward).  This will likely result in high investment in masternodes  >>  price of the coin will go way up   >>  price of masternode will become too expensive for most people   >>   more people will begin staking coins.

So probably at that point the distribution of stakers will increase and as a result network security will increase.

@8-bit-party  Does this provide relevant feedback or are you looking for something more specific?

Also this is just some initial thoughts, I may be missing something. Please point out flaws if they are there.

A key factor for security in staking is distribution  (number of stakers)

So:

20 users with 10coins staking each   is better than   1 user with 200coins staking.

Possibly by using different control ports for tor (one for each MN).   Would need to test this out though

I've been trying to sync for 15 days.
I'm up to around block 1010000 and not moving, even though 8bitd is at 100%
I sent my coins to my address already so now I'm really stuck.
Tried syncing on 3 different machines, including an i7 3770k with and SSD and 24mbit download speed.

Could someone please host a .tar.gz of the blocks?

I am working on the new ANN. Please postpone current discussions and questions and let's focus on the new ANN for a while to avoid repeating questions and first pages being continuation of same problems. So, the ANN should be kind of knowledge base & faq enough to start the 8BIT journey without need to ask where to download a wallet, bootstrap, read about masternode cost / profit etc. The ANN will not replace a dedicated website, but should bring an answer to 99% of questions.

I will start:

- short history
- goals / market niche
- core websites - home page, block explorer, alt block explorer
- basic economy model - inflation / block reward / block time
- github, wallet links
- bootstrap / parsed blockchain links
- exchange(s)
- staking tutorial - PLS PROVIDE ONE
- masternode tutorial - PLS PROVIDE ONE

Feel free to post your comments here or via PM.
There will be no fancy GFX at the moment, but we all will be happy if anyone will provide some.

Cool, I get it, the future is going to be great. But in the meantime, I need access to my money, and the wallet is broken (Linux build).

Could you please provide me with a copy of the blockchain so I can access my funds?

Like all I need is for you to .tar.gz and upload the blockchain

On my workstation with 32GB RAM and in i7 + SSD, I'm getting nowhere.
On my VPS, I'm getting:

EXCEPTION: St9bad_alloc
std::bad_alloc
8bit in ProcessMessages()

Edit:
I'm suck at block:     "blocks" : 1010218,

First person to upload the blockchain, and provide their 8bit address, gets 60 - 8bit tokens from me. I'll post the TX ID here.

You are so far away from current height, that once forked, I have no idea how much computing you would need to get the right chain. Current page is 289, I am absolutely sure that if you browse last 10 pages you will find exactly what you need.

I am compressing my complete .8bit directory without the wallet.dat and 8bit.conf at this moment.
At this moment this blockchain will be 20 minutes old.
I can provide this if you can tell me where I can upload it.

The 60 8bit coins you can send to 8YyG4zaUrx7hgkTBDeiCtorqU2aUd3c93J
