Reading your comment had me wondering, if Borussia Dortmund were outside of the "safe zone" for the Champions League next season, and they won this years Champions League, would they still qualify for the Champions League next season? Is the winner automatically qualified for the next season?

I also don't believe that Dortmund was defeated by Mainz. It shouldn't be a tough match for them, Dortmund is one of the biggest team in Bundesliga and they have much better players. Dortmund have nothing more to fight in Bundesliga because the fifth position is enough for them to get a last ticket of Bundesliga to play in Champions League next season. Bundesliga and Serie A will have two extra spots for a fifth position of each league, to join Champions League.

Dortmund will have a final match in Champions League with Real Madrid and they have to reserve best players for that match. They have less quality players than Real Madrid and reserve best players for the final is very important. Real Madrid can have many good substitutions to use but with Dortmund, it is impossible because they don't have too may good players on bench for substitutions.

Stuttgart have got ahead of Bayern Munich after the recent win. Bayern Munich haven't played their game on this week yet though. But I just admire Stuttgart's rise in the standings this season. Leverkusen and Xabi Alonso deserve to be discussed the most but Stuttgart also deserve the appreciation for their success.

I get your perspective that Dortmund didnt play hard against Mainz. Avoiding injury and exhaustion is wise ahead of the Champions League final. Real Madrid is no easy opponent, therefore they must be at their best. The rotation of important players by Edin Terzic was smart. The London showdown is the greater picture right now. This win saves Mainz, right? Gaining those three points must be a relief after trying to avoid relegation. You can image the relief and rejoicing! I dont know who is struggling the most and for now i would say Union Berlin after they was leading with 2 goals the lost against Cologne with 3:2.
As the game between Mainz against Dortmund is still running Mainz is in front with 3 goals and right now out of the relegation zone.

But unfortunately, Union Berlin failed to make another score in that match because FC Koln really could still do their best because FC Koln was also playing at home. And it's true, the efforts made by FC Koln were not in vain because FC Koln managed to beat Union Berlin. It seems like the Bundesliga is no longer a priority for the Dortmonud team at the moment because if you look at the performance they played in the match against Mainz, the Dortmound players didn't force themselves to play to the fullest of their ability so that the Mainz team was able to win with a score of 3-0 in that match and were lucky as a result of winning in In that match they are now out of the relegation zone. Dortmound players chose to prioritize the Champions League final because they realized that the Madrid team was a very difficult opponent for them to beat.
