I think the result between Leverkusen and Leipzig wasn't a surprising defeat for RB Leipzig, since Leverkusen is a great team and they only performed below their potential last season. This time in a game in their home stadium against RB Leipzig I thought that it is going to be a fierce fight and Leverkusen would have a slight edge due to the home advantage and that is how it turned out. They can play great attacking football and of course their third goal was massive luck, but they brought themselves into the right position and the counter attack was well played, so the final shot was luck but the attack itself was very well prepared.

But it was a results game that could have ended differently as well. Leipzig wasn't a much weaker team, but Leverkusen played a few attacks that RB Leipzig should have defended much better than they did. When an attack looks easy it is either because it was brilliantly played or because it wasn't defended very well and both was true for some of the Leverkusen attacks.

Which made this a surprise because RB Leipzig appeared so perfect against Bayern Munich in the super cup cup, so the defeat they got against Leverkusen was so surprising. Xabi Alonso is able to read RB Leipzig's weaknesses and he really took advantage of a good counterattack and defense against RB Leipzig and they also excel because they are playing at home so they have more motivation to beat RB Leipzig. Losing several key players due to injuries also had a big impact on the defeat faced by RB Leipzig, thus making their attack and defense a little weaker.

Leverkusen are not much better than RB Leipzig, but their motivation is so high when playing and I don't think this can be separated from Xabi Alonso's ability to strategize and he is good at motivating players to play more consistently. This is the first match that is quite convincing for Leverkusen and if they are able to perform consistently then they will most likely become a title challenger this season.
