Bitcoin is like the internet, it is not just one thing.  in order for the internet to go down, you would need 99% of the computers in the world to go down.  There will always be an internet up and even if the internet went down, it would pop back up for all the internet consists of is a bunch of computers grouped together to share and exchange information.

This is what I thought, but just wanted to make sure. A bunch of people in real life were trying to freak me out.

If the internet goes down, bitcoin is the last thing I would think about.

There would be some a massive panick action through the whole world. Chaos, anarchy or maybe even worse.

There would be no trading activity in the online banking, finance, markets, stocks. Nothing will be done again. You can only miss and probably will tell your children and grandchildren in the future what it bitcoin and internet.

What if the internet goes down temporarily? What would happen to BTC?

See the article about ISIS possibly trying to take down the internet.

http://www.inquisitr.com/2639738/isis-hackers-trying-to-take-down-the-internet-cyber-warfare-app-discovered/

Quote
As the Hillary Clinton email scandal has taught us, even high-ranking government officials use the internet to share sensitive information

Who the hell wrote this article, and why are they getting paid for this when I'm sitting here posting on bitcointalk  Undecided

Quote
The hacking experts believe that it only took around 18,000 smartphones running the ISIS app at the same time to generate the massive amount of internet traffic needed to disrupt the system.

Do these people know anything about ISIS?  Unless there's some secret Islamic State phone-farm running 18k instances, I highly doubt that many fighters have phones with the capabilities to run such an app

Quote
According to Anonymous hacktivists

Nevermind then, I'm done reading this trash

Well I`m glad that I found some logical answer on this question, first question from people who never heard about bitcoin is exactly this " what will happen if someone turn it off?" Well Im not an expert in all this and I didnt know how to answer this question in good way.  I admit i was afraid in some moments, when i thought about things like this.

If the internet goes down, bitcoin is the last thing I would think about.

There would be some a massive panick action through the whole world. Chaos, anarchy or maybe even worse.

This is good one! And this is probably truth, who knows what will happen and what kind of massive panic chaos will become from turning off internet. What will people do without facebook, instagram, twitter... they will go out on the steet and start shooting each other. Eh it would be nice maybe...

If the internet gos down will use (IPoAC) IP over Avian Carriers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_over_Avian_Carriers

(I am a 1MB block supporter who thinks all users should be using Full-Node clients)
Avoid the XT shills, they only want to destroy bitcoin, their hubris and greed will destroy us.

The first thing is that internet is not going anywhere .. It will be here always.
If internet goes down then there will be no miner running and the difficulty will starts decreasing ..
No nodes ... Nothing .. And if internet goes permanently then bitcoin will die ;-(

then it would be impossible to use bitcoins because all the transactions and the mining process happens with the help of the internet i guess then we would have to wait till the internet would be fixed and brought back to our everyday use

Until the restoration of internet what will happen?
If Bitcoin network breaks down then we will go for cash. But, it will be very bad, because lots of people will end up loosing the money they invested in bitcoin. It should not happen for the sake of God.

with a packet loss ratio of 55% (due to user error)

this technology suffers from poor latency

 Cheesy This is GOLD, LOL

What's the point of implementing packets through pigeons though?  Just send whatever damn message as a whole and save the bird a few flights

I wrote an article about pigeons in Damascus - might be interesting to some:

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=ea1_1397012080

If you really think about it, IP over Avian Carriers might actually serve as a back up one day...let's not hope it comes to that  Shocked

Yes you are right. Bitcoin can never seize, and the Internet will never break down, it’s totally impossible, no one can break down the Internet, so, Bitcoin will continue to exist.
Because there are multiple format for keeping the internet alive always. This is the power of distributed network computing.

This is the same question that will be asked when the bank system fails. There will be no more Bitcoin transactions when the internet goes down.

Life sucks.

Yes just a one thing will not change everything. It will be hard for that to happen. Bitcoin is a global currency, and has value more than U.S dollars, lots of people prefer Bitcoin, because, Bitcoin is versatile, and being versatile is what makes the value of Bitcoin. The versatile things will withstand any difficulties like internet break down.

Well I don’t think no possibilities to break down the Internet, even if it does break down it will be for a while, and Bitcoin will seize through out the time of break down, and there will be no transaction of bitcoin only at that time. Then bitcoin will work normally once internet gets resumed.
