Why is PPCoin considered "Major" - it's not, its minor at best.

before huge NMC rally, PPC had more than twice its market cap. ant it was about 2 weeks ow that situation untill I decided to move it to major.
actual situation - I agree, no signs for promotion to major.  I believe there should be a big histeresis and some inertia in those changes. we cant have a coin changing major-minor 5 times a day because of some artificial line being crossed.

I count your opinion as a vote for removing it from major.

How can PPCoin be considered major with less than 100 articles listed in google news?

If we're judging based on market cap, maybe ripples should be considered "Major"?

In my opinion these lists need to be more carefully managed - set yourself some criteria. For example don't just base it on market cap, also base it on client downloads, news articles, etc.

It brings something brand new to the table, proof of stake.  Perhaps it'll change in the future, but for now it remains very innovative (in theory).

Proof of stake is innovative, but stupid... If I come up with a cryptocurrency that's based on the moon cycle, but causes babies to die, then I create 1 billion units and sell one to a friend for $10 giving it a "market cap" of $10 billion, is that a "major" cryptocurrency?

yes...

I believe we are simply reporting here that PPC has a market cap in the top of the alt coins.  That's the market's way of saying it's a "major" cryptocurrency.

I'm guessing people would like the novelty of your mooncoin; however, people like me might remember the exchange moonco.in that stole all our litecoin/bitcoin and ran away... Sad

thats market cap of $10 my friend. ppc's are not centralized. so all of them are on the market. not just one. if you count "potential" not available, the price of gold should drop to 1 cent per Ozt when a distant planet with 3 quadrilion tons of gold is found . it will not drop.

any way I am making a poll.

You're mistaken - if the latest valuation per "vince's moon coin" is $10, and there are 1 billion coins, then the market cap is $10 billion.

PPC's are slightly centralised - with a centrally defined fee. Although they are looking at ways to move away from that.

Market capitalization (or market cap) is the total value of the issued shares of a publicly traded company; it is equal to the share price times the number of shares outstanding

if only 1 share is issued, the market cap of mooncoin is 10$ .

Shares outstanding are all the shares of a corporation or financial asset that have been authorized, issued and purchased by investors and are held by them

right, so my currency has 1 billion issues "shares" or "coins"... I just happen to hold them all, and I've only sold one... = market cap.

in other words, I mined 1 billion coins, then sold one for $10.

This is how every cryptocoins market cap is calculated - in other words, its a stupid measure.

However, most of the alt coins don't have 1 person holding 99.99999% of the coins... the one that do aren't worth as much and aren't listed in the major list here....

you are correct that if you make your own coin with a billion of them and sell one to someone for $10, then that person is a fool and you shouldn't value yours at $10 billion.  This doesn't apply to other coins, so move on.

Right lets put it another way - only a very small percentage of mined coins are for sale on the exchange, a $5000 investment ramps the market cap by $20+million - its not unheard of, it happens. This is why market cap is not a good measure.

ok, what measure would you like to use?  And is it assumed that market cap is what we're using to measure "major" coins?

Public float. Public float for companies excludes shares held by "company officers, directors, or controlling-interest investors". This accounts for the fact that insider shares are not traded (an approximation), and therefore "don't contribute" to the actual capitalized value of the company.

Now the definition for "insider" is a bit more difficult in crypto, but an approximation would be authors+friends+associates. Maybe a velocity calculation that counts age of coins in every single wallet?

As I said, I "mined" 1 billion coins - so therefore they are on the market.

A better measure is the trade volume which has gone through exchanges. I can make a 10 billion market cap cyptocurrency by buying $10,000 worth of coin. However if we measure on volume, then all we see is "$10,000 traded in the currency on exchanges" which is a much better measure.

But I think there should be more than one measure - and I'm happy to discuss ideas if you're open to it.

edit: just checked the volume - highest volume I can see was 7.5BTC worth in a day.... that is frankly laughable.

All right, JunkCoin is somehow worked out ok, mined and traded.
maybe I shuld go more easy on it.

I think il change
-JKC Junkcoin- deliberately being the worst: premine, bad config, low diff + slow retarget, instamine superblocks a'la MNC.

into:

-JKC Junkcoin- started as a joke, but now working ok. low starting diff and slow retarget like BTE, FTC, MNC, CNC

will it be ok ?

It doesn't matter what i believe, here I'm just to report facts, like them or not.

I will never joke in this thread.
