There's currently a >51% attack going on on XVG which exploits a bug in retargeting in the XVG code.

Usually to successfully mine XVG blocks, every "next" block must be of a different algo.. so for example scrypt, then x17, then lyra etc.

Due to several bugs in the XVG code, you can exploit this feature by mining blocks with a spoofed timestamp. When you submit a mined block (as a malicious miner or pool) you simply
set a false timestamp to this block one hour ago and XVG will then "think" the last block mined on that algo was one hour ago.. Your next block, the subsequent block
will then have the correct time.. And since it's already an hour ago (at least that is what the network thinks) it will allow this block to be added to the main chain as well.

This is what is going on since about 06:00 UTC of 04.04.2018:

Code:

As you can see in the text above, those blocks are all subsequent, so one miner gets them all and you see there's 90 min difference between all the blocks, thats one bug the miner is
exploiting. You also see the correct time is the latter time.. so the last block ended on 13:51:06 and the block before was 12:17:47 and the block with the correct time before that one
was at 13:51:05 .. That means the hacker is mining one block per second !

The vergeDEV @ Discord says "everything is okay - there's nothing to fix"..

Since about 99% blocks by legit pools are rejected - and the dev team is not able to understand this problem, i'm closing and removing all VERGE pools from suprnova.

If this is the case, XVG is done.
Big pools are bowing out because of an exploit and the dev team doesn't think there is a problem?

Relax, it's already being dealt with. Nobody is "done", crap like this happens quite often and the Devs responded.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." Ben Franklin

Twitter announcements

We had a small hash attack that lasted about 3 hours earlier this morning, it's been cleared up now. We will be implementing even more redundancy checks for things of this nature in the future!

https://twitter.com/vergecurrency/status/981578693062610950

opened that twitter message and saw that there are several compensations for the attack. Sent 1.8 Eth to it in hope to get some compensation but now i think it is a scam.

Anybody any idea if its real or a scam and if it is a scam how to get the ETH back?  Undecided

Why the hell are such scam attempts, sites, links tolerated on the official Verge Twitter Account?Huh?

Damn, seems not to be my day, first some hours orphaned blocks while mining XVG with my Baikals, now even fall victim to such scam ....  Angry

Those scam links aren't "tolerated"... instead, they're like cockroaches that you can spray and spray and keep spraying and they keep coming back. I, personally, have reported at least 50 of the damned things in the last two weeks.

But PLEASE... for the love of all that's holy... STOP FALLING FOR THEM. If anything sounds too good to be true, IT IS.

Why on earth would Verge initiate a compensation program that involved people sending them Ethereum in order to get more Ethereum back? If you're not going to examine the twitter name close enough to see that it's an obvious fake, at least use a little common sense.

Look, i'am well aware of all kind of scams, at least i thought so.

However, maybe my problem here is that i'am not a twitter guy and only once or twice per week read some twitter tweet, nothing else, so absolutly unexperienced in twitter.

BUT, in an official Verge Tweet with about 80 replies and 40 of them either scams or fake accounts that say they got the ETH back seems just wrong to me.
If this was someone else profil, ok, if it was at a whole fake Verge twitter account, ok, but having 50% fake and scam messages on an official VERGE announcement is not right.
An official Twitter profil has to be clean, easy as that!!!

And here now i absolutly begin to realize why twitter is banning crypto things. They must get shitloads of complaints. I got a victim as an very experienced internet user, whats
left for the the guy that has not much of an idea.

Meanwhile that scam account on that Verge twitter account has made aboout 10 Eth so far and Eths are continue to roll in, nothing that i allready posted there that someone should
remove these scams.

For these 2 reasons:
1.) It is a scam on the offical Verge page, not just on some fake profil or similar
2.) Because it fitted. The scam wrote: To compensate for the attack .... we give giveaways. As all my Baikals had for about 3 hours only Orphaned blocks it seemed legit that XVG gives some compensation out.

Of course i know better know, but it still makes me angry that there are 10s of scams tolerated on an official Verge Tweet, this should not be like that, easy as that.

I get what you're saying, but the same thing is happening on a lot of other coins Twitter accounts. Impersonating the official accounts - most definitely make sure you read the @NAME - often times it'll be one letter off or some shit.

Sorry you fell for it... sadly, I'm sure you won't be the last person to do so. We've all done stupid shit here and there - but hopefully learn from it. Sometimes, unfortunately, it's an expensive education.

I'am not a twitter guy, no idea about other coins. I mine XVG with all  my baikals for months, hence the reason this twitter message was of interest for me. I learned my lesson the hard way. But than again. An official webpage, twitter profil should not be like that either way. From official sites/profils someone should await that they are as clean as possible.

And thinking more and more about it, i honestly understand now twitters stance on crypto, while bevor i have fallen victim to such scam i just wondered what stupid move from twitter this is to ban crypto. Makes total sense now.

Anybody ever filled some complaint on the FBI Internet Crime Complain Center (IC3) site? Seriously, i won't let go this away just like that.

I've sold my stash thanks to the last pump. Now waiting patiently for the price to take a dive so I can get back. I heard there's a major partnership announcement coming in the next 2 weeks. I like how the verge team goes about the project. It's delightful to be on this train

if you thought we have the ability to delete those scam tweets, we do not. we can only report them and block them, but everyone else can still see them. it is happening to all major coins right now. we're hoping twitter adds some sort of human verification.

I indeed thought there is. Actually after even trying to report all these scam i noticed that there is even No report function for scams. You can report every shit, but not scams, amazing. (or i just was not able to find such).

Filled an complaint to the FBI Internet Crime Complain Center (IC3) @ https://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx/ which was actually easy to go through and submit. I can only advice other victims of internet scams to do the same. If indeed all coins are somehow victims, be it only for reputation, on twitter and these 1000s of scam messages than it would make some sense if the coins themself fill in such complaint, not?

There is 0 action by Twitter.com. In over 6 hours i even was not able to get to some human support ....
