I have a beginner (or idiot?) question, does Steem store articles in their blockchain or in an SQL database?
All the posts are stored on the blockchain.

So your steem account makes money according to your amount of steem invested there ? Is this right ? I get 10 free steem. Is 10 steem enough to make much impact or do I need to invest more then that ? What would be a nice amount to invest ?

You only get 3 free steem for creating an account through steemit.com. It won't have much impact at all for voting. If you are a really good blogger, you can try to get a hit by posting an article. I'm not certain if investing is a good idea. If you power up to SP, it will take 2 years to fully divest of it. You can also try mining it, if you have a desktop. A typical 4 core machine can generate about 2 or 3 SP per day right now, if not more.

on the blockchain To clarify, the text of articles and comments is on the blockchain. Any embedded media is stored as links. This makes the storage requirements not absurd, as most times the text itself is fairly small. In theory it is highly compressible too, though I'm not sure if the current implementation does that.

Maybe I'll mine or and add it to my account ? Wow 2 years ? But how often would you need to blog ? Well if you on blogger there is no steem ^^ So that makes it more difficult.

Just know that when you mine, you only get SP. So you still will have to power down your SP, and it takes 2 years to reap all of your rewards. I am mining on an I5-3450 and only using 3 cores and got about 7 SP in the last 24 hours. I am also trying Vultr to mine, but am finding with all of the disconnects, it is not profitable. Also, it appears the package that offers 4 gigs of ram is not adequate to mine, you need the 8 gig package, which is rather pricey. P.S. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do with Vultr? I still have a $97.00 credit with it.

Also IPFS implementation is on its way.

is there still a chance to earn steem if I get to start writing there? I'm curious to see how much i would be earning if I write one article per week to which I will also be promoting my own blog. is it allowed as well to link our own blog in the articles?

You can link to whatever you want. It is a decentralized system so there aren't really any rules. It is up to voters to decide whether they like what you have to offer. Mostly the problem is getting people to notice it at all in the enormous sea of posts. Without some sort of significant following you won't make much.
