Bitcoin in terms of monetary supply is not much better than gold. Both of them have limited supply, Bitcoin is limited due to an algo behind it, gold due to natural scarcity of easily available metal. Regarding the speed of transactions, this is not a problem either since no one is going to transfer gold directly as a means of payment. A gold pegged currency (or a basket of such currencies) would do just fine...

Regarding speed of transactions, gold is as quick as bitcoin? I thought people did transfer physical gold to each other, unless you're talking about the old US notes that were actually backed by gold, weren't gold coins used? Assuming they did (which I'm not completely sure of), then bitcoin is (obviously) light years quicker. Not to mention I don't it's hard to argue that payments will all be digital in the future.

I think that every time the Bitcoin can have fall in value, there would be ideas such as this one that Bitcoin would one day die and be gone for good. Well, no one can be sure of what can happen in the future but I do hope that Bitcoin will stay alongside with the top fiat money we have. I don't see Bitcoin to completely replace the fiat money though.

Did you read that part about "no one is going to transfer gold directly as a means of payment"? Physical gold can be used for settling accounts between countries, say, once a year. Settling accounts (if you don't know what it means) comes down to calculating the net position of each counterparty (in this case, the countries that trade with each other), i.e. who owes whom exactly and how much after accounting for all imports and exports. It will be either a foreign trade proficit or deficit in respect to each trade partner (barring the obvious case of imports equaling exports)...
